New upgrade policy, version maintenance policy, and version number policy

2017-11-19T23:02:00+00:00

For reference, we use this software version numbering structure: ..

Upgrade policy

We continue our ”one year free upgrade protection” policy, meaning that any new version released within one year of your latest purchase (new or upgrade) is free.

Updates where only the build number is incremented (bug fixes / minor non-structural updates) for any version (major.minor) that you own, are always free - also after the one year free upgrade period.

Any new version (major or minor) released after the one year free upgrade period requires an upgrade purchase.

What changed?

In April 2016, we announced that future minor version upgrades would be free. This reverses that. Going forward, minor version upgrades will (again) be paid unless within the "one year free upgrade" period.

Version maintenance policy

We only maintain the current / latest version (major.minor) - the only exception being critical security updates, which we provide up to 3 years after a new version (major.minor) has been released.

What changed?

We used to maintain several back versions. We will no longer do this. However, the critical security updates period (after a new version release) is extended from 2 years to 3 years.

Version numbering policy

Going forward we will assign version numbers as follows:

  • is incremented when there is one or more new major features, a bunch of new minor features, or when we significantly restructure the software.
  • is incremented when there is one or a few new minor features, or when we make minor structural changes.
  • is incremented for bug fixes / minor adjustments to existing features.

What changed?

In April 2016, we announced that the minor version number would be incremented when "there are just a few new minor features, or when we make minor structural changes". This is now when "there is one or a few new minor features, or when we make minor structural changes".

CYBERsitter plug-in updated

2017-03-16T10:00:00+00:00

We have updated the CYBERsitter plug-in for Simple DNS Plus to allow users to override the redirect-to IP address, so that web requests for a blocked web-site can be redirected to your own web-server (instead of the default CYBERsitter web-server).

The updated plug-in can be downloaded from http://files.jhsoftware.dk/sdns/plugins/v52/cybersitter-plugin.zip

DynDNS Service plug-in updated to intercept dyndns.org (Dyn.com) updates from Internet/NAT routers

2017-01-11T20:56:00+00:00

We have just added a new option to the DynDNS Service plug-in for Simple DNS Plus, which allows you to intercept dyndns.org (Dyn.com) updates.

Many Internet/NAT routers (and other devices) have a built-in function to update a dyndns service (a.k.a. "ddns") whenever the public IP address changes. This is often hard-coded to use a few specific dyndns providers / update formats, and dyndns.org (Dyn.com) is typically one of these.
With Simple DNS Plus (on a public static IP address), you can now run your own dyndns service and pretend to be dyndns.org (Dyn.com) - and have such routers update it.

Read how to configure this at http://simpledns.com/kb/66

The updated plug-in "DynDnsPlugIn.dll" file can be downloaded from https://github.com/jhsoftware/sdns-DynDns/releases
Place this file in the "c:\Program Files\Simple DNS Plus\PlugIns" directory (overwriting the existing file) to update.

The updated plug-in will also be included in the future builds of Simple DNS Plus (v. 6.0 build 119 and later).

We have also open sourced the DynDNS Services plug-in - the source code is available at GitHub: https://github.com/jhsoftware/sdns-DynDns
The plug-in is released into the public domain as open source. You are most welcome to fork the source code, contribute code enhancements, and/or use the source code as a starting point for developing your own plug-ins.
