The class was about 1 Corinthians, not Ephesians. He referred to Eph. but very briefly.

As to the change from the NIV to TNIV. Possibly I just didn't notice that one. No reason.

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,

Interesting that you didn't give this TNIV rendering of Ephesians 4:11 in your list of improvements over NIV. I'm not sure that it is an improvement. It certainly seems to imply a reference to "the apostles" as the original twelve, "the prophets" as the Old Testament writing prophets, and perhaps "the evangelists" as the four gospel writers (a post-biblical sense of the word). Did Fee teach this interpretation? I doubt it. It certainly doesn't agree with his interpretation of 1 Corinthians 12:28.

I agree with you in also preferring to drop "edify", which to my mind is a Biblish term which is not well understood. I would tend to understand "edify" in 1 Corinthians 14:4-5 as more like "give deeper understanding to" with an intellectual focus, rather than the more accurate "build up" with its moral and relational focus. So thanks for reminding us that tongues and prophecy are not to give us understanding but to help us to live together better in God's way.
