The Press Is Not Above Reproach for 01/19/2018

Fri, 19 Jan 2018 00:00:00 -0800

At the risk of sending the left into a state of apoplexy, a monolithic, biased, renegade, politicized press is a far greater threat to liberty than a president criticizing the media.

Like their First Amendment counterparts — the freedom of religion, the freedom of assembly and the right to petition the government — the freedoms of speech and the press are an important part of what has made the United States the freest and greatest nation in world history. It is fitting, then, that we elevate them to such venerated status in this country.

President Trump, Please Stay the Course for 01/12/2018

Fri, 12 Jan 2018 00:00:00 -0800

It would behoove President Trump to keep faith with his base and remain hardcore on his signature issue, immigration, both because it's the right thing to do and because it's the wisest political course.

Commentators are speculating as to Trump's motives in conducting a televised bipartisan conference, during which he appeared open to solutions he had previously rejected. Was he using the meeting to contradict the picture author Michael Wolff painted of him in his new book, "Fire and Fury," as being disengaged? Was he strategically presenting himself as more conciliatory for public consumption in anticipation of the inevitable battle over immigration reform? Or is he actually softening on this issue?

Underestimating Trump Supporters for 01/05/2018

Fri, 05 Jan 2018 00:00:00 -0800

It is disheartening to see the ongoing rift between those conservatives supporting President Donald Trump and those opposing him — a rift that began before Trump and may survive his presidency.

Many conservatives opposed Trump's nomination because they believed he was not a true conservative — not even really a bona fide Republican — but rather a narcissistic opportunist who wanted to take his game show hosting and self-promotional platform to a grander stage.

A Celebration of Life for 12/22/2017

Fri, 22 Dec 2017 00:00:00 -0800

People often lament that in our celebration of Christmas, we tend to lose sight of its true meaning. Not to be a contrarian, but I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.

At Christmastime, we celebrate family, giving, tradition, friendship, community, love, goodwill and so much else that is great and good about human existence. These sublime experiences and institutions are wonderful precisely because our savior, in whom goodness inheres, created them.

GOP Needn't Despair About Alabama for 12/15/2017

Fri, 15 Dec 2017 00:00:00 -0800

Republicans should not be disheartened by Roy Moore's loss in Alabama, because the election had little to do with Doug Jones — and probably even less with Donald Trump or the Republican agenda.

Don't get me wrong. It's quite troubling that the GOP's thin Senate majority just became anorexic, but this election by itself is not a predictor of a Democratic rout in 2018. Republicans could sustain substantial losses, to be sure, but the Alabama election doesn't make that foreseeable.

Republican Trump Critics Missing the Boat for 12/08/2017

Fri, 08 Dec 2017 00:00:00 -0800

I am probably too exercised over the never-Trump faction, because in the end, it's doubtful it is strong enough numerically to make a significant impact on our electoral politics, but it still bothers me to witness intramural conservative battles.

I have no quarrel with those who once self-identified as never-Trumpers but now appraise his actions and statements on a case-by-case basis instead of reflexively opposing his every move. My frustration is with those who obsess over Trump and lie in wait to pounce on any real or imagined Trump misstep like panting dogs drooling under the choice slab of beef hovering above them.

Memo to GOP: Pass the Tax Bill for 12/01/2017

Fri, 01 Dec 2017 00:00:00 -0800

For a host of reasons, it is extremely important that Republicans pass the most pro-growth tax reform bill that can squeak by both houses of Congress.

Though President Trump's tweets and manners upset a lot of people, what seems to be lost in the mix is that his administration is making progress along many fronts. It's not just his judicial appointments, though it is difficult to overstate how excellent these have been.

Being Shoved Into Meaninglessness for 11/17/2017

Fri, 17 Nov 2017 00:00:00 -0800

I'm an advocate of higher education and all, but so much for assuming that the development of common sense and sound judgment are part of the package.

A Pew Research Center poll found that 77 percent of Democrats with a bachelor's degree or more believe a person's gender can be different from the sex they were "assigned at birth." You'll remember that Democrats are the party of science, and Republicans the Neanderthal science-deniers.

Don't Mock Prayer. Pray for 11/10/2017

Fri, 10 Nov 2017 00:00:00 -0800

While the unspeakable massacre in a small church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, brought the best out of people there, it triggered the worst in certain others who see everything through their tainted political lenses.

House Speaker Paul Ryan tweeted: "Reports out of Texas are devastating. The people of Sutherland Springs need our prayers right now."

Let There Be Light for 11/03/2017

Fri, 03 Nov 2017 00:00:00 -0700

"Let There Be Light" is a fabulous movie that has taken the box office by storm and by surprise, opening in a modest 373 theaters and exploding to more than 650 in just its second week.

Congratulations to director Kevin Sorbo and co-writer Sam Sorbo (also the lead actors in the film), co-writer Dan Gordon, and executive producer Sean Hannity. Kudos for giving moviegoers a charming alternative to the standard fare offered in theaters today.

There Is No GOP Civil War for 10/27/2017

Fri, 27 Oct 2017 00:00:00 -0700

Despite the unrequited longings of the left and certain vocal Republicans, there is no civil war in the Republican Party, and there is not even widespread disaffection with President Donald Trump among rank-and-file GOP voters.

But this is not what you would assume listening to Democrats and the mainstream media or frequenting the Twitter accounts of a number of high-profile Trump-disdaining conservatives.

Media Ignore Real Democratic Scandals for 10/20/2017

Fri, 20 Oct 2017 00:00:00 -0700

Why the collective liberal media yawn on the multi-headed Democratic scandals surfacing everywhere except on their pages and airwaves?

It's not that the stories are too far-fetched and thin to interest self-respecting journalists, because they are real, damning and supported by sufficiently credible evidence to warrant serious attention and scrutiny.

The Left Just Isn't Right for 10/13/2017

Fri, 13 Oct 2017 00:00:00 -0700

Please join me on a whirlwind superficial but revealing tour of liberal la-la land as we peek at recent headlines. Meanwhile, liberals call conservatives wing nuts.

Singer Nancy Sinatra tweeted, "The murderous members of the NRA should face a firing squad." One wonders whether in her rendering, "murderous" is redundant. One might also wonder whether she thinks other murderous people should be exempt from or perhaps face a less humiliating form of execution.

Unfair Charges of Systemic Racism for 09/29/2017

Fri, 29 Sep 2017 00:00:00 -0700

No matter how often leftists slander conservatives as racists, no matter how much they try to shame NFL fans for objecting to players kneeling during the national anthem, flag-waving patriots are not going to be cowed into surrendering on this issue.

Why is it that anytime leftists engage in political debate or protest, no matter how inflammatory their content or manner of expression, they are glorified and defended? Conversely, why are conservatives automatically condemned as insensitive or censorious when they express their views or object to those of the left?

Traditional Values Are White Supremacy? for 09/22/2017

Fri, 22 Sep 2017 00:00:00 -0700

Does the political left — which dominates the mainstream media, Hollywood, academia and the Democratic Party — really believe its ubiquitous charges of racism against conservatives, or are they a sick ploy to discredit, ruin and defeat its political opponents?

During President Obama's tenure, a conservative could hardly oppose Obama on policy grounds without being accused of racism. It didn't matter that conservatives had fought Hillary Clinton's health care plan in the '90s because they opposed socialized medicine. It didn't matter that they had opposed Bill Clinton's tax hikes. Their opposition to Obamacare and Obama's proposed tax increases had to be motivated by race.

Holding Trump Accountable When Necessary for 09/15/2017

Fri, 15 Sep 2017 00:00:00 -0700

What is Donald Trump up to, and what are his supporters to do? Is Trump betraying his supporters, or are Chuck, Nancy and the media misrepresenting his position?

For the hundredth time, I supported Ted Cruz, not Trump, for the GOP presidential nomination. But when Trump was victorious, I supported him against Hillary Clinton, and I have no regrets about that because though Trump sometimes disappoints, Clinton would have been a wholesale nightmare. Even in hindsight, it's not a close call.

Sens. Feinstein and Durbin Are Fooling No One for 09/08/2017

Fri, 08 Sep 2017 00:00:00 -0700

It's rich that rule of law-scoffing Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Dick Durbin grilled one of President Trump's judicial nominees, law professor Amy Coney Barrett, for placing her religious beliefs above the law.

During Barrett's appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, Durbin asked her, "Do you consider yourself an orthodox Catholic?"

President Trump Must Take Charge on Tax Reform for 09/01/2017

Fri, 01 Sep 2017 00:00:00 -0700

If you thought the left weaponized class warfare rhetoric in the health care debate, just wait until tax reform is front and center. The fate of this reform will depend on President Trump's leadership and GOP conviction.

The importance of Republican conviction goes without saying, right? Perhaps, but that doesn't mean we need to just accept GOP fecklessness and incompetence and quit talking about it. Eventually, President Trump's success and future GOP congressional majorities depend on whether Republicans really stand for their core values and the positions nominally affirmed in their platform. Reducing the tax burden on corporations and businesses is on any conservative's shortlist.

Trump Movement Transcends Trump for 08/25/2017

Fri, 25 Aug 2017 00:00:00 -0700

Do you equal-opportunity Trump haters ever listen to yourselves? You sometimes remind me of the people in those movies who live the same day over and over.

You must wake up every day — wholly oblivious to your behavior the day before — gleefully imagining how you could dismantle Trump with a single tweet, a doleful column or a brief television critique. Even if your criticisms sound new to you, most of us were here yesterday — and during the days, weeks and months leading up to yesterday. What you are offering is not profound.

The Tragedy and Exploitation of Charlottesville for 08/18/2017

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 00:00:00 -0700

The inexhaustible left is perpetually lying in wait to entrap President Donald Trump in some impeachable offense. Sadly, some vocal Trump critics on the right seem just as eager to purge America of Trump.

They hate him and hate that he won, and their impeachment lust will not be satiated until he's gone.
