Minced Meat Video Catch Up

Here are a few vids that crossed my path that I'd like to bring to your attention because, well, they deserve it (your attention). It's a bit of catch up. But here, all in one place, are some sweet effin' effects.1. Progress Report - Wake UpProps to director John, and D & Eddie, and the whole sleepin' crew (who are probably actually some of the most conscious people in the city). You guys made this video look sweet. Sounds great, too! Download the Spill Out Series Vol. 4 Progress Report EP on iTunes via sUPERIOR Belly. You won't be disappointed!2. Danny Brown - The Nana Song (p. Mosel)3. Danny Brown - Shootin' Moves (p. Frank Dukes)Both vidz are from The Hybrid. I'm really impressed at the amount of acclaim and ampage this album has received. Brown and I had an awkward conversation about it when it first came out: he's really nonchalant about what I consider to be important music. (Hence awkward.) Have a listen.4. Black Milk - Deadly Medley (from Album of The Year)Oooh. Elzhi's verse gives me chills every time. *Shiver*5. Inverted Wastelands - I like hip-hop as much as I like weird tekky art. Here's one from Carrie Gates (Saskatchewan) with music by Kero.Read these details, carefully: "Inverted Wasteland is a 10 minute live video performance piece by Saskatoon VJ Carrie Gates, with sound by KERO™. This work was made in response to an invitation to perform at an artist salon in Edmonton called "Future Worlds", organized by the MileZero Dance Company.Audio:track 1. KERO - Gramz - Cryovac recordstrack 2. KERO - Groovytour - Kerohand recordstrack 3. KERO - Ti Shlumpa - Ghostly InternationalCarrie plays up to 10 layers of video at once, using modul8 to manipulate the footage in reatime. All of the footage is custom shot and/or generated by Carrie. This video is a mixdown created after the live event (which is documented on Carrie Gates' YouTube channel).• FOR EXTRA INVERTEDNESS PRESS CTRL,ALT,APPLE AND 86. Detroit emcee Invincible and NY-via-Detroit producer Waajeed have just released an inspiring 7" vinyl NECESSITY on Emergence Media featuring two new epic Detroit anthems "Detroit Summer" and "Emergence."

Let's Dance the Dance of Fresh Uncharted Lands

Here's the new video from Awesome In Outer Space (Quelle, this time featuring Mars Dynamo). It's directed by Nic Notion and is not what you would expect from the Chicago-based emcee, known well for his vintage vibes in the hip-hop duo Crown Nation with Denmark Vessey. (Click the highlighted words, Quelle has some free music up online for you.)
(object) (embed)

Pared down as it may be, it's a polished piece of work. I love music that challenges the norm, throws off your expectations.
And speaking of experimental video and music, keep pressin. Someone was gripin' to me the other day that "hip-hop can't really go anywhere else" and I think that's hogwash. Anyway posting up Quelle's new vid reminded me of one Dial81 + fam made back in 2007, directed by John Schweitzer. Notice Modes, ID, Mobil at the front.

Monica Blaire & Ro Spit x Burn Rubber 3 Year Anniversary

Two of the most polished artists in Detroit are performing on stage together to bring you The Renaissance State of Mind Experience. Starting at 6pm, Friday July 2nd in the alley behind St. Andrew's Hall, join Ro & MB for a friendly BBQ, followed by a stage show like no other in Detroit that blends hip-hop and R&B backed by a live band. Ro's raps and energetic, yet nonchalant demeanor combined with Monica Blaire's powerful voice and amazing personality will give you chills. Promise. If they don't, you probably don't have feelings. Just sayin'.
The theme of the night was inspired by Ro & MB's winning remake of Jay-Z's Renaissance State of Mind -- our boy DBIT re-created the beat from scratch for them. Talk about commercial appeal! The track can be found on Ro's "Oh SH#T! Project" which came out in late 2009. Download it at
Here's the video.

You can also check out my exclusive interview with Monica Blaire, just before her groundbreaking performance at the DIA.
The performance upstairs at St. Andrew's will be followed by a great afterparty downstairs at The Shelter with DJ Graffiti. Nice one guys!!!

sUPERIORBelly is sweet

DIAL81 at sUPERIORBELLY has hooked up a fine-looking post for last week's episode of Minced Meat. He even caught our antics on camera and edited down the audio for the interview, sans commercials.

Beat Per Week #7 from Doc Illingsworth

I like this track a lot, played it first on Minced Meat last week. But for some reason, I couldn't bring myself to say "Pimpshits" out loud over the airwaves, though we all know it would have been hilarious. Say it out loud. See?
Here's what Doc says about it:
"I had this little pimpish style groove in my head. I also put a little interpolation of Morris Day and The Time's "Cool" in the background. This ain't the next level shit. It's pimp shit lol. It's a bit rough....not sure if I'm exactly stuck to the instrument choices I made. I also recorded some silly vocals on top. They might be hard to hear but I'm seriously thinking about redoing this and making the vocals really really audible. Some of the lyrics go as follows "I gotta jheri curl and I'm spraying on activator, don't get pimp slapped, better have my money".....Things of that nature. This was done in Ableton with Acid 7 rewired into it for some of the drum stuff.

Q&A + Mix from DJ TJ The King

DJ TJ THE KING has been gracing turntables since he was a kid. His love for good hip-hop and provocative, progressive minded music brought me to inquire, and the result is a series of quick answers to accompany the mix he made for Veg Selects, here. Catch him on the decks live at St. Andrew's Hall for the official concert of the 2010 Hip Hop Congress National Conference & Summit Saturday June 26, 2010.MM: What made you first place your finger on the fader? DJTJ: Ever since I was in the single digits my uncles have been calling me DJTJ and it stuck with me growing up. It's like it was meant to happen -- it's kind of crazy if you look at what people call you as a young child and it becomes a genuine reality.MM: You occupy a pivotal place in the timeline of hip-hop music. Your work alone and with Jay Electronica is blazing a trail for independent artists. What's the best thing about being a hip-hop DJ in this current musical climate? DJTJ: The best thing is that I get to express good hip hop music that will carry on for a lifetime and I don't have to work a 9 to 5 anymore.MM: Do you think hip-hop as it's represented in mainstream media needs to change?DJTJ: No, I think that the areas that aren't being heard need to step it up.MM: What does it mean to be a tastemaker right now?DJTJ: It means to have an opinion that is heard and matters.MM: What do you listen for when you hear new music? What does it take for an artist to get on one of your mixtapes? DJTJ: Any artist with good music can get on my mixtapes -- I don't discriminate. I listen to the combination of the lyrics, beat and delivery.MM: What are you listening to right now? DJTJ: I'm really feeling Danny Brown, Black Milk, MarvOne, Guilty Simpson of course Jay Elec. I think they have messages that the masses need to hear.MM: What were you doing before you met Jay Electronica? What was your first show together like?DJTJ: I was doing Grind Season Mixtapes right out of Greenfield Plaza. Our first show was rough because it was in front of a very big crowd for our first time together -- but after that, we golden. MM: What do you want to do next? What's the next project you're working on? DJTJ: I'm going to continue the Grind Season Mixtapes starting with artists from Detroit, then I'll start to hit other hoods in the nation that are simular to Detroit.
