Ten in Ten For 2011

Wed, 29 Dec 2010 03:43:20 PST

This year's 10 in 10 challenge has switched formats. I don't have the time to administer the challenge, so have elected to use tools which you can administer yourself.

I have chosen to use Facebook as the primary tool to provide textual updates amongst the members of the challenge. You can post updates to the 10-in-10 Facebook page by just 'liking' the page at

To record and track our actual weight loss progress, I have decided to use the fabulous free resource over at I have set up a weight loss challenge beginning on the 3rd January, which runs for 10 weeks with a goal of losing 10 pounds.I have created a weight loss challenge at :

To track your weight loss progress, you just need to go in to your training log on the day that you weigh-in and then select 'edit the day details' (hover over icon in day cell). I'll be entering my initial weight on Jan 3rd, then on each subsequent Monday. As you update your weight, it will be reflected in the challenge.

Well, good look to everyone taking part - I'll see you on Facebook!

Glass is half empty?

Fri, 19 Mar 2010 09:24:12 PDT

(image) So I got half way there - 5 lbs down...I could choose to be bummed out, or happy, so I'll take the latter.
If anyone want to continue on with a longer view in mind, go over to buckeyeoutdoors and join the 2010 weight loss challenge.  I'm not done yet!

Many thanks Nigel for the accountablility that helped me keep away from the kitchen!(image)

9lbs down

Mon, 15 Mar 2010 16:45:59 PDT

I'm happy. I managed to get myself weighed here in Prague and I am happy to say that I'm 9lbs down from when I started ten weeks ago. OK I didn't manage ten pounds but I'm alright with that. I still have another 10lbs to get to my target weight and I'll keep updating the blog for as long as I can with my hopeful progress.(image)

I want to say Thank You to all participants and Nigel for this challenge. I had already planned to make my way to getting under 200 lbs by May 20th (my 40th Birthday) and this has helped tremendously. Down 24 lbs and 7 more to go.

Thank you, Nigel!

Mon, 15 Mar 2010 05:18:16 PDT

Well, I didn't make the 10 pound mark, but I did lose 9 pounds, which brings me down to my personal goal (and what I think is ideal) weight. I've been meaning to do this for over a year, and desperately wanted to get back down to my proper weight. Thanks to you, Nigel, for giving me the jump start I needed to get motivated and do it!
I feel so much better lately; I like the way my jeans fit again; and I'm feeling very motivated to continue eating well and watching my weight. Congratulations to everyone for working hard to lose some weight, no matter what those numbers are, and good luck for continued success!(image)

Week 10 Update - Final Update (Nigelrunner)

Mon, 15 Mar 2010 03:45:13 PDT

Well, I'm sorry to say I failed miserably at this 10 in 10 challenge.

Ok, I'm nearly 3 pounds lighter than when I started, but a bout of dehydration could do that for me! :)

I was doing fairly well at the mid-point, but I lost focus in the latter stages. There's no dressing it up...I didn't do well. But, I am going to be keeping an eye on my weight and will still endeavour to shift a few more pounds over the coming months.

Congratulations to the many participants who have achieved some VERY impressive results - you should be very proud of your achievements.

Well, that's it for now...we'll probably all be doing this again at the beginning of next year, but try to be good in the meantime...

Nigel :)(image)

Did not achieve the goal :/

Mon, 15 Mar 2010 03:35:05 PDT

There are no excuses, I didn't do what it takes to lose the 10 lbs. Sure there are reasons that got in my way but even if you (and I) thought they were great excuses (reasons) the bottom line is I didn't do what it takes to be successful in this competition. So, next weekend I have my half marathon and I will continue the quest to lose the full 10 lbs and then some! Thanks Nigel for the competition and good luck to all that have a few more to lose and congratulations to all who succeeded!

Fallen at the last hurdle...

Sun, 14 Mar 2010 04:13:03 PDT

Was looking so good, i had lost 10 in 8 weeks. i had stayed at a loss of 10 in 9 weeks.

So weighed myself this morning for the last time in this challenge and have lost a total of 9 in 10 weeks.

I've lost the challenge :(

Still have at least another 10 pounds i want to drop so it starts again from here.(image)

Late In

Fri, 12 Mar 2010 12:09:45 PST

Didn't update my weight this week so my weight loss isn't quite so impressive as it looks. Weighed myself today and I'm three pounds down. BUT, that is over a week and a half. Don't get me wrong though. I'm over the Moon that it's still going the right way and I will be keeping up the challenge way past the 10 weeks. If I can lose another 10lbs or there abouts, which should leave me hovering around 185lbs, I will be a happy bloke.
I've been watching Eddie Izzards trek around the UK on the BBC. I am soooo inspired. How can someone without training just get up one day and decide he's going to run 43 marathons in 51 days? Just goes to show what the human body and mind can do. Then again, he is as mad as a bucket of frogs.
Will be updating 10 in 10 from Prague next week hopefully with another weight loss. Problem is - new country - new food. But, new running sites - bonus.(image)

Disney Princess Half Marathon

Mon, 08 Mar 2010 16:54:38 PST

While clad in a tiara (it's an unwritten rule that one must accessorize when running the Disney Princess half marathon), I completed my second half of the year yesterday and knocked four minutes and 35 seconds off my time in January. A new personal record! I'm down 2.2 pounds this week so I'm struggling with how to keep this momentum moving without using the race as an excuse to eat.

In regard to the race, I had some mental struggles during miles 1-2 wondering why I was doing this AGAIN. I’ve only had this self doubt and feeling of "Why do I run?" once during a long practice session months ago. By mile three, I was in love with the movement, the entertainment, and the chance to know I'm competing only against myself so improvement is the one goal. The first half of the race simply flew.

Unfortunately, I reached what I call the "no man's land" during miles eight and nine. That's the part of a race when I realize I'm truly on my own without entertainment, visual appeal, and the surrounding runners have also hit a low so conversations aren't giddy as they were while running down Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom. My body finally hit a wall with leg fatigue around mile 11 and I struggled to the very end. I also didn't cry when I crossed the finish line because it wasn't a shock that I completed another 13.1. I expected myself to make this second one in better time.

Fortunately, my recovery only took one day due to a new plan: low fat chocolate milk, stretching, professional massage, and allowing myself to take Tylenol after I ate a meal with protein. I feel NO pain, stiffness, or discomfort today. THIS is a HUGE accomplishment! So two halves down and two to go this year in my quest to complete four to celebrate my 40th year. Happy running, everyone! As always, thanks for this venue of support, Nigel!(image)

Next to last weigh in

Mon, 08 Mar 2010 11:39:03 PST

Ran yesterday for the first time (3.5 miles) since having pneumonia. Just about to go run today. Even though this is the next to last weigh in, I want to keep this going for another 10 in 10. right now I weigh just about what I did when I got married nearly 18 years ago. I want to break the 200 lb mark by May 20 (my 40th birthday). It would really feel good to be able to say that I weigh at 40 what I weighed as a kid in the Marines. Good luck to everyone!(image)

Half Marathon on Sunday helped...

Mon, 08 Mar 2010 06:37:24 PST

Run/walking the Bath Half Marathon with my daughter helped this week! I just hope I'm not dehydrated and will suck it back, but I really resisted the "eat anything I see" stage after the race, so fingers crossed!
Down two!!(image)

Reached my goal!

Mon, 08 Mar 2010 04:07:55 PST

After a week of no weight loss, I managed to lose three pounds (that's the most I've lost in a single week, EVER!) and am now down to my goal weight! Actually, I've reached what I think is my ideal weight. . . and the best part is that now I weigh what my driver's license says I weigh. I've lost a total of nine pounds in this challenge, so still could lose one more, but am thrilled that I've made it down to my goal weight so would be fine just staying here! That'll be the hardest part, of course--just staying right here! I'm trying not to get too excited and will continue to avoid the foods that I've been avoiding to be sure that I don't add the pounds back on.

Congratulations to everyone else who's met their goal, and to those who've lost weight and are still working toward their goals. Keep up the good work!(image)

Finally some progress!

Mon, 08 Mar 2010 01:38:37 PST

I broke out of my rut this week. The 4.1 lb loss is from the beginning of March because I forgot to enter my weight last week. To be honest, I was just disgusted with myself, but I'm pretty sure I'm back on the downhill slide and if you want to know why - you'll have to listen to Fifty Counting Down this week!(image)

No change this week...

Sun, 07 Mar 2010 10:17:23 PST

Still the same this week, so a loss of 10 in 9 weeks.

But i have done a lot of situps and pushups this week so i had expected to gain a bit with the additional muscle. Hopefully the additional muscle will mean more lost weight next week. Still have at least 8 more to lose before the summer before i'm happy.

Keep it going guys, nearly there :)(image)

Weigh-In 3/1/10

Tue, 02 Mar 2010 14:12:49 PST

Sorry this is late again, trying to work my way back to the land of the living. Haven't ran since just before Valentine's since my present was pneumonia. I started back to work Monday also back to playing and coaching soccer. Thought I was getting sick again with a sore throat but realized that I am very vocal during soccer and I haven't been vocal for nearly three weeks. Have been doing yoga. Love the On Demand feature on cable, I get Exercise TV On Demand, go to the Yoga section and pick a video. Found one the seems like a good fit for running called Yoga Fitness Fusion and Sportskool offers Yoga for Runners (another good one) every once in awhile. Hopefully I'll be running again by last weigh-in. My ultimate weight loss goal will be to get under 200 lbs.(image)

Same Old Story

Tue, 02 Mar 2010 08:22:11 PST

Still on same weight for past two weeks. I've just finished my two week course and did manage to get some runs in on week one but only one in on week two and missed my long run. Ran 6.2 with the club last night and cycled in to work today. Will cycle in for next two days because I have physical safety training (fighting) and could do with not being too tired to defend myself. Friday I'm doing a fifteen mile mountain run in mid Wales with a couple of pals and will hopefully get some blog material. All that said. If I don't at least lose another pound minimum then I will have to revert to using a meat slicer or amputation.(image)

Woohoo Mount 10 conquered.. in eight weeks...

Mon, 01 Mar 2010 12:35:36 PST

Weighed myself and now down another 2 pounds, so thats 10 in 8 weeks. Provided i gain no more in the next fortnight i will have completed the challenge.

Now my next goal is the next 8 pounds. I do that and i'm in the 13 stone mark and the lightest i have been in 12 years :)(image)

Best Expectations

Mon, 01 Mar 2010 02:13:01 PST

So I flatlined for last week and I am pleasantly surprised by that. Had a REALLY stressful week with very little running and whole lot of comfort eating, so to have not gained is a very pleasant surprise.
Today is bright and sunny and I had a great long morning commute run with a full pack and felt really good. I am determined to have a better week this week!

Yes! Back on track!

Mon, 01 Mar 2010 02:04:36 PST

Down two this week now that I'm not travelling and celebrating. Half marathon next weekend should set me up just right to do the same again next week if I'm good...(image)

Eat Less Bread!

Sat, 27 Feb 2010 20:12:10 PST

Nothing to see here....

Tue, 23 Feb 2010 03:19:35 PST

No change this week at all. According to Wii fit yesterday i was exactly the same, which is fairly impressive.

So now i've 8 pounds lost in 7 weeks.

2 pounds in three weeks.. Bring it on :)(image)

@coachadam's Week 7 report #10in10in10

Mon, 22 Feb 2010 14:49:02 PST

Dropped another 2.75 lbs making it 6.75 lbs in total, but there's no rational reason. Full report at

All over the board! :(

Mon, 22 Feb 2010 13:48:51 PST

Well, it is encouraging to see others struggle but there's no comfort in sharing bad news. I just have not been able to get down to business and this past week a few vaca days in NYC didn't help! I was eating a lot of salads, grilled chicken and other good things but I did indulge in a couple of meals with friends that offset my good intentions. My running has been getting back into groove and that's good! I'll run off a pound or two before this contest ends but I need to continue and get 10 + off before summer hits. Thank you to all for sharing your stories, success and struggles - it all helps us all! Very best friends,
