Northwest Trail (Wakazoo Trail)

Sun, 19 Nov 2017 17:43:24 -0600

This flat, mostly dirt and sand trail, circles through the Allegan State Game Area in Fennville, traversing primarily through the forest. There is one area to run of a dirt road on 52nd Street in between 118th and 120th Ave. The equestrian trails are there to use also. The Northwest Trail runs along side North Swan Creek Trail and South Swan Creek Trail, both is not as flat around the creek and more of a challenge to run. The Northwest Trail (or Wakazoo Trail as the Boy Souts call it) is a hiking trail. Hiking trails in the Allegan State Game Area are marked with yellow blazes on the trees.

There is a network of MTB trails in the park that are excellent to run on. You could do a run of almost any length with great views as good as the Grand Canyon.

Horsethief area trails

Tue, 10 May 2016 18:20:03 -0500

The Horsethief area MTB trails start at this campground and are excellent to run on. There is a series of trails and loops, so you can pretty much do a run of any length you want. Nicely undulating without any steep climbs, as mountain bikers apparently don't like those too much.

Animal House Shelter's Dash for the Dogs 5K Run/1 Mile Walk

Mon, 02 May 2016 14:35:08 -0500

Animal House Shelter is holding our 6th annual Dash for the Dogs 5k run and family fun walk on Sunday May 22nd at Citizens Park ( 511 Lake Zurich Rd- Jewel Tea Pavilion) in Barrington, IL. The goal of this event is to raise necessary funds for Animal House Shelter to cover the cost of our animal's medical expenses, general needs and overall care. The 5k run/walk starts at 9am in the morning (registration begins at 7am) followed by a 1 mile walk at 10:30am at which dogs are welcome. After the run and walk we will have food, medals, awards and other festivities for people to enjoy. Animal House Shelter rescues 98% of our dogs and cats from pounds and animal control facilities with high rates of euthanasia. These places do not have the space to accommodate the number of animals coming in and euthanize at astounding rates. Animal House Shelter takes in these pets (many of which are on "death row") regardless of age, breed or known health problems and rehabilitates them mentally and physically. We then personalize the adoption process to assure that each one of our animals is going into the best possible home for their particular needs. We provide the best possible veterinary care to all of our animals and never decline treatment, whatever it may entail, if it means that the animal has a chance at a new and healthy life. The dogs and cats at Animal House Shelter are given all vaccinations, including a rabies vaccination, are neutered, dewormed, micro-chipped, heartworm tested (dogs) and feline leukemia/FIV tested (cats) prior to adoption. Dogs are kept on heartworm preventative and all animals receive flea and tick prevention monthly. Dogs are walked a minimum of four times daily to give them the maximum amount of socialization with each other and with people. Our cats are housed in a large free-roam cat habitat where they are constantly socializing with each other, staff, volunteers, and potential adopters. Animal House Shelter is open 7 days a week and 365 days a year. We never close, even on holidays, and strive to go above and beyond all standards of excellence when caring for the mental and physical needs of our animals. We understand the importance of getting to know each of our animals as individuals in order to place them in the best possible home for their particular needs. Each and every animal is treated with the love and respect they deserve as though they were our own pets. We have rescued, rehabilitated and adopted out over 28,000 dogs & cats since we opened in 2002. Please support Animal House Shelter to help us continue to save the lives of so many homeless animals!

Kilimanjaro Stage Run

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 14:38:50 -0500

Summit Expeditions and Nomadic Experience has opened registration for the fourth annual Kilimanjaro Stage Run (KSR), a non-competitive group run of 260 kilometers (162 miles) around Africa's highest peak. The fully supported 11-day package offers endurance runners a unique opportunity to run the rugged, challenging dirt paths and footpaths that have been used by locals for hundreds of years, yet tourists rarely see. The KSR was conceived by Simon Mtuy, Tanzania's foremost trail runner, expert mountain guide and world-record holder for the fastest ascent and descent of Mount Kilimanjaro. "Kilimanjaro is heavily traveled by hikers, so my intent with this event is take runners away from the crowds and immerse them in Tanzanian environments and culture that most visitors never experience," says Mtuy. "When runners first arrive, they spend a day acclimatizing in my family's farm, where we grow organic coffee, honey, fruits and vegetables." The run itself takes eight days, passing through monkey-inhabited forests, savanna adjacent to Amboseli National Park, where elephant, zebra and giraffe roam and family-run coffee farms. Runners pass through lush rain forests, past waterfalls and enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro at every turn. In this non-competitive adventure, runners are encouraged to pause to engage with local Tanzanians they meet on the trail and socialize with their fellow runners. Come evening, runners relax in full-service camps and refuel in remote villages under the mountain's looming shadow, enjoying catered meals featuring freshly harvested ingredients.

The Great Pumpkin Haul

Mon, 22 Jun 2015 22:37:08 -0500

The Great Pumpkin Haul is a 2 mile jaunt through forests, open fields, over creeks, hay bales, and through the scenic Botanic Gardens. There is a catch though: you will be covering these two miles carrying your very own personal pumpkin! That's right. We will weigh it and mark it and you will be ready to go! Only the best Pumpkin Haulers will finish without dropping their pumpkin and for the love of fall, don't pick one that is too light. You need the biggest orange orb you can find!
