Google Earth 4.3 released

2008-04-16T16:40:52.648-07:00

Ok, I am sure by now you have heard that Google Earth 4.3 has released. However, have you seen all the new 3D buildings that have been added? I don"t know how many actual buildings hve been added, but I would not be surprised if it is a couple thousand. Yes, I said THOUSAND! For example, now San Francisco has all the building downtown represented in really nice photo textured models. Oakland, the same thing. Yesterday, Oakland, California had about 8 phototextured buildings. Today, there are maybe 100 or more.

Some of the other cities I have found that have lots of photo textured buildings added are: Austin, Texas, Phonix, Arizon and Baltimore Maryland. Seriously, you should check out Baltimore as there are lots and lots of very well done buildings.

As for the other cities that did not recieve the photo textured treatment, they got many "gray buildings" added. San Jose, California got some as did Long Beach, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Toyoko, New York and many others that I have not even checked out yet.

Leave your suggestions in the comments about cities that have gotten massive updates or just ones that you think are cool.

The first church on the site was probably built in the 6th century, and a 10th century inscription may be seen on a fluted column next to the entrance, but the first definite dedication is from a plaque on the church dating to 1128. It was constructed in and from the ruins of the Forum Holitorium and its temples, along with a jail (carcer). Spolia from all these ancient remains is still apparent in the church's construction, most particularly three columns from the Temple of Juno Sospita which are incorporated into both the 10th century and 1599 north facades of the church. The dedication to St Nicholas was made by the Greek population in the area. In the 11th century, it was known as the church of Petrus Leonis, referring to the converted Jewish family who rebuilt the nearby Theatre of Marcellus as a fortress. The church was rebuilt in 1599, with a new facade by Giacomo della Porta (though the medieval campanile - originally a fortified tower, then adapted to a bell tower after being abandoned - was not altered). It was named after Marcus Marcellus, Emperor Augustus's nephew, who died five years before its completion. Space for the theatre was cleared by Julius Caesar, who was murdered before it could be begun; the theatre was so far advanced by 17 BC that part of the celebration of the ludi saeculares took place within the theatre; it was completed in 13 BC and formally inaugurated in 12 BC by Augustus. Its present name derives from that of its final rebuilder, Gaius Sosius. The three columns of the temple which survive to full-height today belong to the Augustan rebuild, but the cult of Apollo had existed in this area since at least to the mid 5th century BC when an Apollinar (a sacred grove or altar) was recorded on this site. The first temple building dates to 431 BC, when the consul Gnaeus Iulius Mento inaugurated one dedicated to Apollo Medicus (the doctor), in fulfilment of a vow to him during a plague of 2 years earlier. A radical reconstruction was begun by Gaius Sosius, probably just after his triumph in 34 BC. Upon the construction of the theatre of Marcellus soon afterwards the temple's frontal staircase was demolished and replaced with two staircases on the sides of the "pronaos". It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. It was in the Lower Silesian capital of Breslau on 10 March 1813 where King Frederick William III of Prussia had first awarded the Iron Cross and called upon the German people in his "Aufruf an mein Volk" to openly resist Napoleon. In October, in the Battle of Leipzig, Napoleon was defeated, but large numbers of Germans fell on both sides, as many had been forced to fight on the French side. The hall was built in the German Empire in 1911–1913 according to the plans of Max Berg, during preparations for an exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations, as it is also called, reminding that most of Europe was involved. The cupola was made of reinforced concrete and with an inner diameter of 69 m and 42 m high; it was the largest building of its kind at the time of construction. The symmetrical quatrefoil shape with a large circular central space seats 6,000 persons. The dome is 23m high, made of in steel and glass. The Jahrhunderthalle , a name also chosen for halls in Bochum (1902) and Frankfurt (1963) for different anniversaries, had been intended to commemorate a 19th century event, but instead became a key reference for the development of reinforced concrete structures in the a 20th century.

The Lorenz church is the a bit younger and larger one of the two main twin churches St. Sebald and St. Lorenz in Nuremberg's Old-Town. It was built between 1250 and 1360 on the foundations of an earlier romanesque basilica. To the 2nd Half of the 15th Century, it was expanded several times. The towers rise about 81m into the sky. At the west side there is a large rosette window with appr. 10m diameter. In the World War II especially the roof was badly damaged. Inside there are numerous works of art. To emphasize are the angel's greeting by Veit Stoß and Katharienen-Altar by Michael Wolgemut.
