This review is quite a thing of beauty in its own right! I've only read one Sebald, but what I felt reading it (Austwitz) is exactly what you have described here.

'a companion made of words'

What a wonderful phrase! I'm going to have a lot of trouble not stealing it.

I also would have never heard about this without THE POWER OR LITBLOGS!

Seriously, though, I've been eager to get a hold of this for a couple of weeks now (copy is in the mail, arriving today, I hope). It looks like I'm in for quite a ride. Thanks for the great post.

Thanks for writing about this book -- I would have never known about it if you hadn't brought attention to it.

What's so great about this novel is how much is packed into such a small space, and how disparate themes and stories all reverberate off each other. As I went and re-read passages, elements that seemed random on first encounter now had meaning. It's a book with boundless wonders, steeped in a post-9/11 miasma that fuels the surreal NY setting and odd behavior of the characters.

Again, thanks for turning me on to this great work.
