California employers added just 12,500 jobs to payrolls in January, pushing the unemployment rate down to 12.4% from 12.5% in December, according to the state Employment Development Department.


Los Angeles County’s jobless rate edged down to 12.9 percent in January from a record 13 percent in December, said the California Employment Development Department.
