Thanks for the comment! I try not to listen much to stuff I know is coming up until it actually appears on the horizon (so to speak - I have a rolling playlist of the next 10 songs on my iphone). I used to think "oh this will be an 8" etc all the time, it hardly ever turned out that way though, so now I just let myself think it. Sometimes with new number ones I think in marking terms when I listen to them - specially if it's something I'm pretty meh about even hearing - but I can't imagine my opinions will have stayed the same by the time I actually get there.

This piece made me start giving marks out of ten on my own Motown project (in itself not wholly unlike Popular). It's been tremendous fun attaching marks to things, but even as a supposedly throwaway lark or brazen debate-starter tacked on at the end, I nonetheless find it difficult to just toss a mark out without some level of agonising, and I agree it fundamentally changes the way you listen to something. When I'm listening to a record, not just to write it up but also if I hear it while out and about, on shuffle etc, thoughts like "oh, this is definitely at least an eight", or just "what mark am I going to end up giving this?" rudely intrude and change my focus from enjoyment to analysis much earlier and more forcefully than I was expecting... does that happen to you when you hear some 90s or 00s #1 that you're not meant to be covering for months yet? Do you also find yourself trying to find fault with things, so as not to ruin the system by giving out too many 10s? Anyway, thanks for planting the idea in my head.

You might be tested on that "even if for charity" clause later on...

Strictly speaking "Vincent" shd be a 2 not a 1 I realise. It is quite possible no 0 ratings will ever be given.

In the "Links" bit of the WP interface add a link to it and put it in the "Links for Popular" category of links and it will magically appear in the main "Popular" home page

I need to comprehend the magic that links this to the Popular front page. I have slipped away from these marking guides a bit I ph34r (though not hugely).
