zym026/Alessio Ballerini - Blanc

Tue, 23 Nov 2010 10:19:58 GMT

After five months of silence we're happy to release Blanc, a five-track EP by Italian sound designer and artist Alessio Ballerini.

Downloadable from Zymogen the release is also accompanied by 2 videos and 15 drawings. The two videos were created via animation of the drawings. They describe two possible perspectives that do not bode well for the future of our planet. Between 2000 and 2008, the ice sheet of Greenland lost 1.5 trillion tons of ice, causing a yearly average rise of 0.46 mm in the ocean levels. Science Magazine states that the ocean's current growth rate is 0.75 mm per year. The complete dissolution of the ice sheet will result in a rise of 7 metres in the ocean levels. Despite the varying perspectives regarding this issue, there is a common thread of hope among global citizens, without which such loss would be inconceivable.

"Blanc & Noir" is also an installation that shows the process of the work's formation, as well as that of the drawings and the videos derived from it. The installation is designed to be expanded beyond the context of the gallery and the limitations imposed by it. Rather, it is hoped that the work will come to life in the homes and dwellings of those who take the drawings. Furthermore, the installation is a site-specific work that changes significance in situ, since the drawings constitute the work yet remain unfinished. The exhibition space is filled by a screen where the two videos are played in loop. The drawings, which each visitor can take, are placed below it. The work, as it is presented in the installation format has been selected by the Quattrocentometriquadri gallery, and is among the six finalists for the Metrocubo contest. The exhibition has been presented on Sunday 21st November 2010 at 11 am at the gallery in Via Magenta 15, Ancona, Italy.

zym025/Nicolas Bernier + Simon Trottier - The Market Fresh

Mon, 24 May 2010 09:12:01 GMT

Nicolas Bernier and Simon Trottier are two talented musicians from Montreal, Canada. Nicolas is an electroacoustic artist and founder of Ekumen collective more recently famous for his live performance "La Chambre des Machines" with Martin Messier invited in festivals around the world including Transmediale (Germany) and Sonar (Spain).
Simon has collaborated with a number of instrumental rock and improvised music groups, and has accompanied pop artists such as Québec’s French pop duet Tricot Machine and Halifax’s spooky folk duo, Ghost Bees. He is now a member of Ferriswheel with Torngat's multi-instrumentalist Mathieu Charbonneau, as well as Toronto’s haunted blues-folk group Timber Timbre.
Together they released two excellent EPs on 12rec ("... et retrouve en foret" and "Objet abandonne en mer") and in August 2009, during the Sound Travels Festival in Toronto, they performed an improvisation gig in a market fresh during the day and this one-track EP is the recording of that show.

Because of its improvisational nature this EP is deeply different from everything you already heard from them.
The perfect mix of guitar melodies and electronic sounds which was the trademark of their previous songs it's here expanded and dilated into a unique fluxes.
The brilliant combination is still there, but this 19 minutes long recording shows a very different approach to the sound and leaves more space to experimentation and sound design.

Former Zymogen artist Marihiko Hara just released his third album Nostalghia on Audiomoves label.

"I composed this album "nostalghia" after being inspired by several transparency films my grandmother had left me. The films were taken in 1967 during her travels in Britain, France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, the Soviet Union, USA and so on. She had rarely told me about her travels, (I am not sure why), except for a few funny stories. Nostalghia is the process of my efforts through composition in approaching a memory embraced in those film. The image of this album was designed by my partner Natsuko Yanagimoto (a vocalist of "Rimacona", she is also a photo-based artist). She designs with an unique method; scanning the films, printing them on cloths or papers, sewing them and re-scanning. Some of tunes within this album have been used in contemporary dance performance."

If you liked Cesura, Marihiko's debut album on Zymogen, we really recommend you to listen to Nostalghia. The album is available on Boomkat, iTunes, Amazon and eMusic.

Sing on in Silhouettes

Sat, 02 Jan 2010 11:23:33 GMT

Two years ago Zymogen joined forces with 12rec for an ambitious remix project of Crepusculum's first ep, Sky Diary.
The Sky diary Edits album was a great success and turned out as one of the most elaborate projects carried out at this place ever.
On december 26th Fred Baty aka Crepusculum released his new album Sing on in Silhouettes on 12rec. The album is available for free download and we really recommend you to make yourself a gift. This is what our friends at 12rec have to say about it:

"Fred brings to perfection what was his trademark ever since. Kitsch and emotional weight, musical craftmanship and a self-taught comprehension in harmonics setting apart Crepusculum from all guitar music you might have heard before."

All the best for 2010!

zym024/Werken - Sum

Sat, 12 Dec 2009 17:56:10 GMT

Sum is the debut album of Werken, one of the aliases of Tilman Ehrhorn known for his releases on Mille Plateaux and Resopal Schallware.
Working full time as saxophone and reed player, composer, producer and sound designer Tilman Ehrhorn is a highly regarded jazz artist who also took roots in the electronic world.

This release introduces an experimental and ambientish dubby side of his producing skills.
In many parts of the tracks, beats are used rhythmically free to interrupt a pulsing soundpad, which is a main element of the music. Some minimal changing figures are taking hold to break up continous sequential patterns. The non-conventional manner of generating sounds as well as using elements of chance within the production process creates similarities with the improvisational niveau of jazz and contemporary composed music.

Netaudio Berlin 2009

Thu, 08 Oct 2009 15:27:05 GMT

Zymogen is represented at Netaudio Berlin by Jimmy Behan and D'incise who will perform tonight at the experimental stage at Maria club.

"From the 8th to the 11th of October 2009, Netaudio Berlin will be gathering the international netaudio community for a four-day music and conference festival in Berlin, under the title “East meets West”. 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. We recall pictures of hands reaching out to pull people from both sides up onto the Berlin wall. The event will take place at Maria, a venue situated immediately on the former Berlin ‘death strip’ once dividing the city and the world into eastern and western hemispheres."
