Sample Sale March 7th

This winter, the studio makeover it has been what helped me the most to stay inspired, despite so many white skies and snowy days. I have never seen so much snow in my life! While we wait for spring to arrive in Boston, we rearranged the cotton ribbon spools by the color, designed new shelves  and a costom made ladder, painted the studio head to toe in white and two small black chalkboard walls, add some lettering by amazing studio assistant Rebecca Cahan and printed lots of adhesive labels to rebrand the cotton ribbon collection. We are ready for a new season! The Sample Sale is this Saturday, March 7th from 11 to 4, come and let us know what you think!

The winter market at Justine's

There are no words to describe the market at Justine's house. I wanted to photograph every detail of this beautiful house and I was not be able to put the camera down during the day. Lots of light, with big windows and large space. Some walls are unfinished and they were the best background for any photo, there were no need to style, I left everything as it was. It was also the first sunny day after a week! We filled the space with amazing vendors, curated by Justine, and every room was glowing with colors and textures. I hope these images can give you an idea of the day and I want to thank eveyone that came and spend the day with us. It was another party to celebrate the season and it wouldn't be the same without you. A special thank to Justine Hand for opening her house and for being the best host everyone could ask for! [...]

I want to thank everyone that came to visit us and made the event very special and a lot of fun. And to Jill Rosenwald, Susy Pilgrim Waters , Kirsty Allore and Stephanie Schlim for sharing the day with us and bring their beautiful wares. Here below a little glimpse of the party, our espresso station, my boys and the party favors for customers that stopped by. It was great, we will do it again![...]

Metallic Loose weave ribbon

Today lots of studio news! The new line of Loose weave cotton ribbon woven with gold thread is ready and in stock on our shelfs. During last spring, we launched the natural cotton and metallic ribbon, but the result was so lovely that I was immediately inspired to add more. Possibilities now seems endless... For this fall I designed six new colors ribbon, as Red + Gold, Chartreuse + Gold, Fuchsia + Gold, Peacock + Gold, Sage + Gold and Gravel + Gold (my favorite). New also in the studio, tiny pairs of Crane Scissors, packaged by hand in our studio. As my other line of Ribbon Scissors, I found these embroidery scissors in a notions shop in Rome and loved them so much that I tracked down the manufacturer in Italy in order to bring them to you. They have a lovely shape, with golden handles and the sharp blades are the beak of the crane. Love to keep them on hand on my desk! For more wrapping, we added a Red and Gold line cotton ribbon in the 2/8" width. Imagine how cool it can be for styling an Indian wedding too! To celebrate, we are offering free shipping, wholesale, domestic orders, only, for orders placed between today October 8th through the end of the day Monday, October 13th. The Wholesale Catalogue 2014 has been updated with new products and any feedback or questions are always welcome. Let me know what you think, I'm happy to hear from you! [...]

Calligraphy ribbon with Maybelle Imasa Stukuls

I'm very excited the collaboration with calligrapher Maybelle came to life! We were inspired to collaborate together, as soon as we organized the Calligrafia workshop at our studio last spring. Some first drafts of Maybelle alphabet were ready right after the first class, but it took us a few months to complete the project in details. The black ink alphabet, in upper and lower case, became white relief silkscreen printing, over black cotton ribbon. The long time and effort to have the best printing result, was all worth the wait. Now the Calligraphy ribbon arrived from Italy and it is packaged by hand in our studio on tea dye wood spools. They are so beautiful and I'm thankful to Maybelle for working with me on this idea. Now I started to think, what can come next?

Colors in progress

Our latest production: Custom made loose weave ribbon on wood spools featured at ABC Carpet and Home in NYC. And Loose Weave cotton ribbon in six colors, woven with gold thread, now in production in Italy and available soon in our shop. Stay tuned, we are getting ready for fall with new ideas.

Summer 2014

Today is our last day at the studio, before closing for four weeks. We will be away from July 21st until August 18th, but we will leave you in good hands. Hillary Deane that has been assisting me in all aspects of the studio operation, will be able to process domestic orders and the online shop will remain open. Wholesale orders, expedited delivery and international will resume after August 18th. Rebecca Cahan, that has been working at the studio in the last two years, will continue production for our new holidays products launching at the NY NOW in August. Please review the latest Studio Carta Wholesale Catalogue and come to visit us at NY NOW, booth #7416. We had sparks of Gold and Silver ribbons on our desks this summer! As usual, we pair our display with Albertine Press letterpress stationery and I couldn't be any luckier to have such a great help for every show. I'm hugely grateful to work with many talented people and to see our studio to grow. We couldn't have done it without your support. Thank you! Please follow us on Instagram for some glimpse of italy during hot summer days. Thank you all and have a lovely summer. Stay tuned, we will be back soon! [...]

In the Press: Style Me Pretty Living

I had the real pleasure of working with Meggie Battista of Eat Boutique on the interview for Style Me Pretty Living. Talented Heidi of White Loft Studio was the photographer and stylist for the feauture and I couldn't be any luckier to work with both of them! If you want to read a little bit about Studio Carta, the interview is here to follow and lots of more beautiful photos of the studio are posted on Style me Pretty. What an honor, I'm thrilled. Thank you!How did an Italian lady find herself opening a design studio in New England?  A leap of faith brought me to the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in 1994, with an internship in papermaking. It was my first experience in the US. I returned to Italy after a few years of learning as much as I could from established paper, letterpress, and book artists across the country. When I met my husband in Italy, his studies and then work brought us back to the US, first living in Michigan and then with our three children, in Brookline, Massachusetts.   At first, my studio used to be a small room in my house. Just before my youngest son entered kindergarten, I was ready to move to a larger space and have many more hours in the day to dedicate to my work. Studio Carta opened during the summer of 2010. It felt like a dream!   Tell us a little about Studio Carta.   Studio Carta is a design studio and also the exclusive US importer of my curated line of 100% cotton ribbons from Italy. I work directly with manufacturers to design and develop ribbons and custom made textiles. I oversee every part of the process from designing each product to creating the labels and packaging. I also design a line of letterpress stationery, greeting cards, hand-bound books and journals. I create my own catalogue, website, and take all the photos of everything I sell. Fortunately I have the help from two wonderful assistants who help me assemble and package everything with such grace and thoughtfulness. What do you look for when sourcing fine stationery and custom ribbons from Italy or beyond? I aim to source high quality, unique product, something I would personally use in my work and that I would enjoy to be surrounded by in my studio and everyday life. I also enjoy collaborating with other designers I trust and admire, to combine our aesthetic and skills toward creating something distinctive. It is probably the most playful and fun part of my work.    Tell us about your family (especially, your seamstress mama!) and how they have influenced your design life.   My earliest memories are the busy hands of my mother, a seamstress, the rhythmic hum of her sewing machine, and the luminous dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica, so big that it seemed to fill the windows of our family’s apartment in Rome. This pretty much says it all.   It may be a bit of an Italian stereotype, but I remember my mother by her sewing machine or in the kitchen. From her, I learned a love of the tactile, an eye for beauty, and an attention to the detail of skilled craftsmanship. She taught me the value of being creative, working with passion and mostly doing what you love.   I first apprenticed in the book arts in a Bologna studio, where I learned the traditional style of bookbinding while finishing a university degree in renaissance art history. After many years of working with paper and design, it is not a coincidence that when[...]

We are offering free shipping for all domestic, wholesale orders until June 30th. Please review the catalogue and notice that Studio Carta will be closed from July 18th until August 18th. A long time, I know, but we will make sure to ship wholesale orders until the very end, before our trip. Thank you and happy summer!

Spoons napkin

How can I resist Susy Pilgrim Waters illustrations? and it makes me happy to see our Peacock ribbon tied around her latest work. And the rabbit on top of one of the spoon? so great!

A new site is ready! It wasn't easy to sort hundreds of images and pick the right one that could represent the studio and the work we do here, but I hope this can be a good start. Text is brief, I mostly rely on the photos to tell a story. Any suggestion is welcome, please let me know what you think and how you navigate on the site. Your support and feedback is very precious! Thank you.

Attention to details

What a beautiful wedding! I was so happily surprised when the mother of the bride sent me these images of how she used the Metallic cotton ribbon on the wedding favors. The full wedding is posted on Style Me Pretty and I'm honored to be part of this amazing wedding with just a spark of silver on the table!  Photos by Acres of Hope Photography.
