Living in a place like Texas, I immediately noticed the similarity between the beach display and displays of crosses mourning for 'abortion victims' on highway roadsides. These displays appear to be a riff on the military cemeteries you describe, but I think both attempt to impose a sense of collective sacrifice on otherwise difficult to visualize sacrifice.
