Dark Orpheus, I think we can all relate. Litlove, writers' journals can be fascinating reading. Something to get you psychoanalytic juices flowing ;) Dorothy, I had to read the passage a couple times to make sure he really said 40. It really is amazing. We've gotten lazy in out modernity. I'm amazed at the walking people could do -- 40 miles is SO FAR -- I consider myself a good walker, but 20 miles is about my limit. I've read of other people from the time walking distances similar to Emerson's, and I find it hard to believe.

Lovely Emerson quotes (you really do almost convince me to read writers' journals!) and I DO like the sound of Grub. That quote is hilarious. Reminds me of when I tried to run away from home aged 6, but had to abandon the project because I couldn't carry enough books with me!
