The Holy Ground

Mon, 26 May 2014 06:00 GMT

This year, we are once again participating in the RPM Challenge. Last year, we produced our album All In A Day's Work for RPM Challenge 2007. This year, we are basing our album on the concept behind the Beatnik Turtle songs Beer Beer Beer, All For Me Grog, and Whiskey Yer The Devil. That is, we are taking traditional Irish songs and re-arranging them Beatnik Turtle style. This week, we present the first finished cut from the new album. Watch for more in the month of March!

Playing For Keeps

Mon, 12 May 2014 06:00 GMT

Things have been pretty busy at Beatnik Turtle headquarters the last few weeks getting ready for the release of The Indie Band Survival Guide written by our very own Jason and Randy! We have new Beatnik Turtle songs in the pipeline, but in order to get everything ready for the book's release we decided to present encores of some of the best of last year's songs. Last year, we recently created this theme for Mur Lafferty's fantastic audio novel podcast, Playing For Keeps. You can hear it at the Playing For Keeps website! Playing For Keeps is now a printed book from Swarm Press! It releases this week and is available at Amazon!

No I'm Not Done Feeling Sorry For Myself

Subway 2007

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 06:00 GMT

Tom recorded the original version of this song in 1988 when he got his first 4-track recorder. It was re-recorded a number of times over the years as technology evolved to do something new with it. Finally, now in 2007, this definitive version appears at TheSongOfTheDay.com. The song got its name from a guitar sound in the original versions that reminded Tom of the sound that a CTA train used to make in the underground tunnels. Now that the CTA trains crawl at a snail's pace, they no longer make that sound. Neither does this version of the song, but the name has stuck...

Leftover Leftovers

Mon, 14 Apr 2014 06:00 GMT

One of the first Beatnik Turtle Twittersongs, this one was inspired by a Twitter post from Mur Lafferty. She had posted this tweet: "kitchen clean, fridge cleaned out. WHY do I keep saving food?" That prompted us to look into our fridge where we spotted several species of scary substances.

This Song's Not Sold In Stores

Mon, 07 Apr 2014 06:00 GMT

This song was inspired by an idea from Dana while working on the website and Tom realized into a song within a week. We then used the golden throat of the Beatnik Turtle's bass trombone player as our announcer since he does professional voice-over work. (He cut us a break on his rates!)* *Well, actually he didn't.

Speaking Of Beer

Mon, 24 Mar 2014 06:00 GMT

Mmmmm...beer...and hey, speaking of beer, this song was totally inspired by beer enthusiast and podcaster, Charlie The Beer Guy, who's popular Speaking Of Beer podcast explores the Beeriverse each month. If you're into beer, pour yourself a cold one and check out his podcast! Mmmm...beer...

Two Twenty-Nine

Mon, 24 Feb 2014 06:00 GMT

Things have been pretty busy at Beatnik Turtle headquarters the last few weeks getting ready for the release of The Indie Band Survival Guide written by our very own Jason and Randy! We have new Beatnik Turtle songs in the pipeline, but in order to get everything ready for the book's release we decided to present encores of some of the best of last year's songs. This song, of course, refers to February 29th, or Leap Day. It also refers to heartbreak and loss, but that's not nearly as important as Leap Day. The observant listener will notice that 2007 is not a leap year, and while we considered delaying entire The Song of the Day project until 2008 so this song could fall on 2-29, we just decided to release it on February 28. We are aware that the existence of an intercalary day in a leap year originated under the Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy III in 239 B.C. and it was Aloysius Lilius who proposed the Gregorian calendar in the 1500s - not Gregory. We just found "Gregory" much more singable.

Traffic Cones

Mon, 10 Feb 2014 06:00 GMT

Finnegan's Wake

Mon, 03 Feb 2014 06:00 GMT

The song Finnegan's Wake is believed to have been composed in the mid 1800s and served as the basis for the James Joyce novel of the same title. This week's song is our rendition of Finnegan's Wake which we recorded as part of our RPM Challenge 2008 album, Sham Rock.

Mon, 27 Jan 2014 06:00 GMT

This one was inspired by many of our workplaces, and the game Cube Farm, by Cheapass games. It's the first demo of the song, recorded at the cabin in Wisconsin. Another version of this song was released on our Cheapass Album, and yet another will be on our live album.

The Morning After Christmas (Live)

Mon, 23 Dec 2013 06:00 GMT

Merry morning after Christmas. Although it's stated in the song, we don't advocate leaving the ornaments on the tree and pretending it isn't over when in fact it is. See Take It Down, particularly the line "lazy son of a bitch" for more info.

No Night Stand (I'm Not Your Type I'm Not Inflatable)

Mon, 21 Oct 2013 06:00 GMT

The concept for this song came when Matt Scholtka came up with the lyric "I'm not your type I'm not inflatable." He also had the "no night stand" idea as well. From there, Jason and Carrie Bruno (who's singing) blew it up into this would-be dance club hit.

Kim Bailed

Mon, 05 Aug 2013 06:00 GMT

Yet another of those songs that has it's genesis in something said rather off-handedly only to be followed by the phrase, "Hey, that would make a great song!" After picking up Tom Roper and Tom Beeyachski to head to the studio to record, Jason asked Tom B. if his wife Kim was meeting up with them later. Tom replied, "No, Kim bailed." And later that day the three of them wrote this song.

The Love Notary

Mon, 29 Jul 2013 06:00 GMT

Featuring the great Qadree Holmes on vocals, this song goes out to all Notary Publics everywhere. This song came about when Jason was asked to notarize a few immigration documents for two recently married friends of his - one of whom was applying for U.S. citizenship. When they asked Jason whether he could notarize their signatures "to prove it wasn't a sham marriage," he informed them they were in luck - he wasn't only a Notary, he was the "Love Notary." They laughed a bit at his comment until they realized Jason was serious about the concept making "a great song for The Song Of The Day" and found themselves stranded in his office with unnotarized papers in hand.

Sick Of Sandwiches

Mon, 22 Jul 2013 06:00 GMT

"Can I interest you in a sandwich?" Jason's grandmother once answered this question by saying "I'm sick of sandwiches." When asked about her answer, she said "when you get to be 80 years old, you'll be sick of sandwiches, too." This song is the lunch break song from our forthcoming album, ALL IN A DAY'S WORK. (The pre-release of the album is already available at the iTunes, but the CD's not due until October...probably because the CD duplicators are arguing over what to have for lunch).

The Open Door

Mon, 08 Jul 2013 06:00 GMT

Since this is the first song that Tom ever wrote, it seemed fitting that it should be re-recorded and appear as a Song of the Day. It was written sometime after midnight back in 1987 in a college dorm room and of course, the door was open, hence the title. The original recording from that night appears as today's bonus track.

This one was inspired by many of our workplaces, and the game Cube Farm, by Cheapass games. It's the first demo of the song, recorded at the cabin in Wisconsin. Another version of this song was released on our Cheapass Album, and yet another will be on our live album.

Hot Lava Death

Mon, 08 Apr 2013 06:00 GMT

"Hot Lava Death," said the guy from Hasbro. This was quite a memorable moment in the history of the now-defunct GeekSpeak/BoardGameSpeak podcast. When we made a tribute podcast in memory of Derk and Aldie's show, we created this song using bits of the podcast interview with the guys.

All The Pretty Girls

Mon, 04 Mar 2013 06:00 GMT

Girls! Women! Birds! Chicks! This song's about all the pretty girls out there (and you know who you are) and celebrates each and everyone of them. As the song says, it's not a man's world that spins 'round, it's a pretty girl's playground.

Eleven

Mon, 18 Feb 2013 06:00 GMT

While the name of the song is a Spinal Tap reference, this one is almost a period piece, taking us back to the early 80s when record players and mixtapes were how we listened to and shared our music.

Leftover Leftovers

Mon, 11 Feb 2013 06:00 GMT

One of the first Beatnik Turtle Twittersongs, this one was inspired by a Twitter post from Mur Lafferty. She had posted this tweet: "kitchen clean, fridge cleaned out. WHY do I keep saving food?" That prompted us to look into our fridge where we spotted several species of scary substances.

This Song's Not Sold In Stores

Mon, 29 Oct 2012 06:00 GMT

This song was inspired by an idea from Dana while working on the website and Tom realized into a song within a week. We then used the golden throat of the Beatnik Turtle's bass trombone player as our announcer since he does professional voice-over work. (He cut us a break on his rates!)* *Well, actually he didn't.

Turning Caffeine Into Code

Mon, 22 Oct 2012 06:00 GMT

Things have been pretty busy at Beatnik Turtle headquarters the last few weeks getting ready for the release of The Indie Band Survival Guide written by our very own Jason and Randy! We have new Beatnik Turtle songs in the pipeline, but in order to get everything ready for the book's release we decided to present encores of some of the best of last year's songs. A year ago at this time, Randy, Jason, Ryan, and Tom were at a podcaster party at Dragon*Con. On the balcony, we met Chris Miller (whose podcast can be found here) what he does for a living and the reply was "I turn caffeine into code." Luckily, guitars were close at hand and this song was off to a fast start!

Secret Girls School

Mon, 15 Oct 2012 06:00 GMT

At first we thought Ms. Teen South Carolina was missing a few marbles with her "maps" speech, until we realized she was actually broadcasting a secret coded message to girls everywhere to rise up and unite. This song about girls rising up and taking over the world is dedicated to all Grrls everywhere (you know who you are - Peggy, Rosie, Tara, Carrie, Mur, Tabz, and all cool others we know who are making things happen and getting things done). You rule! It's your world, we're just sightseeing.

Mon, 01 Oct 2012 06:00 GMT

Here's a fresh track hot off the virtual mixing desk from our 2009 RPM Challenge effort to create an album in a single month. The album, to be released later in the year, is called "When I Was Your Age" and features songs that take a look back at when we were kids. This song is a tribute to all our favorite cereals.

Mick McGuire

Sick Of Sandwiches

Mon, 20 Aug 2012 06:00 GMT

"Can I interest you in a sandwich?" Jason's grandmother once answered this question by saying "I'm sick of sandwiches." When asked about her answer, she said "when you get to be 80 years old, you'll be sick of sandwiches, too." This song is the lunch break song from our forthcoming album, ALL IN A DAY'S WORK. (The pre-release of the album is already available at the iTunes, but the CD's not due until October...probably because the CD duplicators are arguing over what to have for lunch).

Jason writes a lot of songs. This one is from his back catalog. Many of the tracks on this one date back to 1999, but thanks to technology we were able to add drums, re-do vocals, and replace some hummed melody lines intended for saxophones with real saxophones.
