Smoke descended on Pullman on Thursday (Aug. 31) from the Dayton wildfire, about halfway between Pullman and the Tri-Cities.

This is just a quick update on the search for a replacement for WSU President V. Lane Rawlins, who plans to retire at the end of the 2006-07 academic year.



Food for the Fight

WSU Dining Services joined the effort to thwart a 4,000-acre wildfire 1.5 miles to the east of Colfax, about 15 miles west of Pullman, by supplying food to fire crews.



WSU Circumventing the Wash. Constitution?

In May, a Whitman County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of two students in two cases challenging the university's policy to let police patrol the halls of WSU dorms. Now, officials are trying to find away to get patrols back to knocking on students' doors.

Smoke from the Colfax-area fires blew east over Pullman on Thursday (Aug. 24). With the fire 60 percent contained and calmer winds, the smoke lessened by Friday.

The hot story in the Palouse since Wednesday (Aug. 23) has been a 4,000-acre wildfire just miles to the east of Colfax, about 15 miles west of Pullman. Crews had the blaze 60 percent contained Thursday night, and police were on alert Friday to evacuate eastern Colfax if winds shift for the worst.

WSU President V. Lane Rawlins announced his imminent retirement at the end of this academic year (May). Due to miscommunication with sources, WSU's newspaper, The Daily Evergreen, has had some difficulty clearly reporting the search process for Rawlins' replacement.
