Fri, 18 Aug 2017 19:49:49 EDT

It was shortly after Michael Conforto's big league callup in 2015 that a group of Mets pitchers took it upon themselves to determine what the rookie's nickname should be. The one that stuck will be on Conforto's jersey for the inaugural Players Weekend, Aug. 25-27.

Young Mets thankful for Grandy's mentorship

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 19:34:39 EDT

Curtis Granderson's nameplate that hung above his locker in the corner of the Mets' room rested on a table about 20 feet outside the doors that led to the clubhouse. Granderson, who was traded to the postseason-bound Dodgers after the Mets' 3-1 loss to the Marlins on Friday, will not be walking through those doors anytime soon. His teammates know that, but Granderson's presence and impact, especially on the younger players, will still be felt.

Rivera claimed by Cubs; Mets recall Plawecki

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 22:32:14 EDT

NEW YORK -- Backup catcher Rene Rivera was awarded to the Cubs on a waiver claim on Saturday, ending his stint with the Mets that spanned the majority of two seasons. The Mets recalled catcher Kevin Plawecki from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Additionally, to replace recently traded outfielder Curtis Granderson on the 25-man roster, the Mets activated pitcher Tommy Milone from the disabled list. Milone had been on the DL retroactive to May 24 with a sprained left knee.

Familia to slowly make his way back to closer

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 19:38:10 EDT

Within the next few days, Mets closer Jeurys Familia will return to the mound for a second Minor League rehab appearance. Familia, who underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his right shoulder in May, still needs to show the Mets he can throw at least 30 pitches in an inning before they will activate him. The organization plans to take his rehab slowly, likely stretching it into the final days of August.

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 00:49:36 EDT

Steven Matz has tried throwing multiple bullpen sessions between starts, as Jacob deGrom has done with great success. He has tried skipping bullpen sessions altogether. Matz has commissioned hitting coaches Kevin Long and Pat Roessler to examine whether he is tipping pitches. He has dabbled in new drills with pitching coach Dan Warthen. None of it has worked.

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 19:25:53 EDT

Jose Reyes stood near his locker, as he has so many times throughout his career, discussing an injury that he hopes is only minor. Tweaking his left oblique Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, Reyes landed on the 10-day disabled list two days later with what the Mets called a "sore left rib cage." The team recalled infielders Gavin Cecchini and Matt Reynolds, also optioning reliever Kevin McGowan to Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 01:44:55 EDT

Mets starter Seth Lugo, who spent much of the season on the disabled list and has been pitching with a partially torn elbow ligament when active, is back on the DL. The Mets placed him there Tuesday, scratching him from his scheduled Subway Series start Wednesday against the Yankees due to a right shoulder impingement. Right-hander Robert Gsellman, who has been on the DL since June 28 due to a strained left hamstring, will take Lugo's place Wednesday at Citi Field.

Collins: Montero, Robles 'have work to do'

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 00:13:52 EDT

By the fourth inning of the Mets' 4-2 loss to the Yankees on Monday, Hansel Robles was already warming in the visiting bullpen. Consider it the Rafael Montero effect. Mets trade Bruce to Tribe for Minors RHP Ryan

Wed, 9 Aug 2017 23:35:15 EDT

Prior to the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, the Mets did not dismantle their roster completely, trading significant pieces in Lucas Duda and Addison Reed but also acquiring one in AJ Ramos. Yet as the Mets continued to slip from even the fringes of contention, so too did their front office's blueprint change. The latest evidence surfaced late Wednesday night, when the Mets traded outfielder Jay Bruce in a waiver deal to the Indians for right-handed pitching prospect Ryder Ryan.

Flores goes deep, but Montero struggles in loss

Wed, 9 Aug 2017 19:36:53 EDT

The Rangers' post-All-Star struggles may have hurt their standing amongst contenders, but Texas proved Wednesday that it still has plenty of life.
