When the D-backs selected Pavin Smith with the No. 7 overall pick in last year's Draft, the club believed his ability to hit at the University of Virginia would translate to pro ball. That proved to be the case as Smith slashed .318/.401/.415 in 222 plate appearances in 2017 for Hillsboro of the Northwest League.

The D-backs open their Spring Training schedule on Feb. 21 against Arizona State University in a continuation of their Collegiate Baseball Series. The D-backs open Cactus League play Feb. 23 against the Rockies in a rematch of last year's NL Wild Card Game at Salt River Fields. It will be the first of six meetings between the two teams. The D-backs wrap up the exhibition schedule as they did last year, with a pair of games against the Indians on March 26 and 27 at Chase Field.
