Duke rehabs with goal of returning this season

Mon, 22 May 2017 14:54:35 EDT

A look at the past and present would suggest that by late July, the Cardinals will be in the market for pitching help. But perhaps this time, the Cardinals can find relief from within.

All right with Wainwright in win over Giants

Sun, 21 May 2017 19:00:48 EDT

Randal Grichuk had a three-run double and four RBIs and Matt Carpenter added a two-run homer, which was more than enough to back Adam Wainwright in Sunday's win over the Giants. Wainwright allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings and knocked in a run with a double. Matt Cain allowed seven earned runs for the Giants, who got homers from Brandon Crawford and Eduardo Nunez.

Sun, 21 May 2017 19:46:00 EDT

Veteran Jhonny Peralta has reached base five times in his first three games back from the disabled list. His return could benefit the Cardinals moving forward.

Lyons progressing, could return from DL soon

Sun, 21 May 2017 18:22:31 EDT

Tyler Lyons threw 58 pitches in a rehab start on Saturday, but the Cardinals aren't quite ready to peg a definite return date for the rehabbing lefty reliever.

Surging Cardinals take on Kershaw, Dodgers

Sun, 21 May 2017 13:03:37 EDT

The red-hot Cardinals head to California on Tuesday to open a series against the Dodgers, with Lance Lynn taking the mound in search of his fifth victory. He'll be opposed by Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.

Cardinals blink in 13th inning of pitching duel

Sun, 21 May 2017 04:34:39 EDT

In a game where the Giants had already outlasted Carlos Martinez, rookie third baseman Christian Arroyo capped a 12-pitch at-bat against Cardinals reliever Kevin Siegrist with a two-run double to help San Francisco steal a 3-1, 13-inning win at Busch Stadium on Saturday.

Martinez dazzles with 9 shutout innings

Sun, 21 May 2017 04:38:46 EDT

The best start of Carlos Martinez's career finished as a footnote in the outcome -- a 3-1 loss to the Giants that extended the Cardinals' losing streak to four. As far as individual significance, however, the night lands among Martinez's career highlights.

Cards get prospect from Braves for Adams

Sat, 20 May 2017 19:43:22 EDT

The Cardinals traded first baseman Matt Adams to the Braves for Minor League infielder Juan Yepez, the teams announced Saturday. Atlanta also received cash considerations in the deal.

Sore elbow takes Wong out of game early

Sun, 21 May 2017 00:49:58 EDT

Kolten Wong was removed from Saturday night's 3-1 Cardinals loss to the Giants due to left elbow discomfort. The St. Louis second baseman was taken out at the top of the fourth inning and replaced by Greg Garcia. His status for Sunday's series finale against San Francisco is still to be determined.

Gonzales excels in start for Memphis

Sun, 21 May 2017 01:36:28 EDT

Astros prospects Kyle Tucker and Jason Martin have been swinging hot bats lately, and the trend continued Saturday as the duo led Class A Advanced Buies Creek to an 8-2 win over Down East.

Cardinals' offer to prospect Robert spurned

Sat, 20 May 2017 20:49:39 EDT

Despite an aggressive attempt to lure one of the top international prospects to St. Louis, the Cardinals fell short in their pursuit of 19-year-old Cuban outfielder Luis Robert, who is instead finalizing a deal with the White Sox.

Cardinals can't hold on after Fowler's homer

Sat, 20 May 2017 01:24:44 EDT

Eduardo Nunez ignited one rally and capped the next to help the Giants correct, at least for one night, their troubles on the road. San Francisco scored six times over the final three innings to nab a 6-5 win over the Cardinals, whose bullpen wasted six scoreless innings from starter Michael Wacha.

Cardinals get creative with Rosenthal out

Sat, 20 May 2017 02:27:39 EDT

Though their final lead was lost by the reliever actually appearing in his scripted role, the Cardinals saw the late innings of Friday's 6-5 loss to the Giants complicated mightily by the unavailability of one critical reliever.

Cardinals activate Peralta, option OF Sierra

Fri, 19 May 2017 20:18:53 EDT

Infielder Jhonny Peralta rejoined the Cardinals on Friday, but not as the fit he once was. Replaced by Jedd Gyorko early this season when medication for an upper respiratory infection left him sluggish, Peralta returns knowing that Gyorko has earned the chance to remain the everyday third baseman. And with Aledmys Diaz entrenched at short, Peralta is now facing a future on the bench.

How Cards reclaimed control of running game

Thu, 18 May 2017 11:17:26 EDT

St. Louis has ranked within the top five in limiting stolen bases each year since Yadier Molina's rookie season in 2004, a period of extended distinction that points to both the catcher's on-field influence and the organization's philosophy of building, and teaching, around it. So to see the Cardinals plummet all the way to 16th in that department last season sent red flags throughout the organization.

Cardinals celebrate '67 championship

Wed, 17 May 2017 20:34:16 EDT

Fifty years after defeating the Red Sox in seven games to capture the franchise's eighth World Series championship, members of the Cardinals' 1967 team gathered at Busch Stadium on Wednesday as part of an anniversary celebration. Mostly, though, they just wanted to share stories.

Staked to four-run lead, Cards fall in extras

Thu, 18 May 2017 02:50:15 EDT

Five innings after erasing a four-run deficit, the Red Sox capitalized on a stellar night from their bullpen by pushing across a two-out run that lifted them to a 5-4, 13-inning win over the Cardinals. St. Louis, which fell to 2-6 in Interleague play, went scoreless in its final 11 innings on Wednesday.

Defense takes step back to slow St. Louis

Wed, 17 May 2017 02:08:30 EDT

Hindered by three errors, an aggressive baserunning try gone wrong and an inability to complete a pickoff, the Cardinals fell, 6-3, to the Red Sox on Tuesday to open a two-game Interleague series.

Cards' missteps unforgiven by Red Sox

Wed, 17 May 2017 02:15:34 EDT

Behind a quality start from Eduardo Rodriguez and a jolt from Mookie Betts, the Red Sox earned a 6-3 win to slow the surging Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Carp ends hitless skid vs. good buddy Arrieta

Sun, 14 May 2017 19:08:53 EDT

With a two-run homer to help the Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Cubs on Sunday and a series victory, Matt Carpenter tallied his first regular-season hit off a pitcher who was once his teammate at Texas Christian University and later a groomsman in his wedding. Prior to that swing, Carpenter had been hitless in 28 regular-season at-bats against Jake Arrieta.

Cards honor breast cancer survivor Darting

Sun, 14 May 2017 14:14:44 EDT

Breast cancer survivor Jessica Darting, selected as the Cardinals' Honorary Bat Girl for the team's Mother's Day game, was so consumed by the sights and sounds around her on Sunday that she never noticed who was sneaking up from behind. Kolten Wong stepped away from his pregame work for a few minutes to surprise Darting in the Cardinals' dugout before the team's series finale with the Cubs.

Waino, Molina keep Cubbies quiet, in funk

Sun, 14 May 2017 18:22:14 EDT

The Cardinals turned a marquee May matchup against the reigning World Series champs into a statement series at Busch Stadium. For those who may have assumed the Cubs would coast to another division title this season, the Cardinals asserted their intentions to stick around as contenders. With a 5-0 win over Chicago on Sunday, St. Louis claimed the series victory and retained its spot atop the National League Central.

Cards' plan to put pressure on Lester pays off

Sat, 13 May 2017 21:40:05 EDT

The Cardinals' game plan against Cubs left-hander Jon Lester on Saturday was obvious, intentional and perhaps summed up best after the team's 5-3 win by one of the key initiators, Tommy Pham. "Run," Pham confirmed. "That was our approach. Get a big lead and run."

Martinez leads charge, beats Lester, Cubs

Sat, 13 May 2017 20:34:11 EDT

Ignited by another electric outing from Carlos Martinez and intentional aggressiveness on the basepaths, the Cardinals, in front of the largest crowd (47,882) in Busch Stadium III history, knocked the Cubs back to .500 with a 5-3 win on Saturday.

Slide interference call sparks plenty of debate

Sat, 13 May 2017 21:09:26 EDT

When Ian Happ was called out for interference after a slide at second base in the fifth inning on Saturday, it was a potentially game-changing play in the Cubs' 5-3 loss to the Cardinals, and a rule that manager Joe Maddon doesn't feel has any place in baseball.

Cecil confident he can regain form vs. lefties

Sat, 13 May 2017 15:30:58 EDT

Though Cardinals left-handed reliever Brett Cecil has identified a mechanical issue that could explain his early-season struggles, he acknowledged that his first impression with his new team has thus far been "embarrassing."

Weaver finally allows run for Memphis

Sun, 14 May 2017 01:28:26 EDT

Johan Mieses' season couldn't have started much worse. The Dodgers' No. 26 prospect hit .100 in April and went from April 28 through May 8 without a hit, dropping his average all the way to .068. But then Mieses, who belted a career-high 28 homers to lead the Cal League in 2016, found his power stroke.

Garcia's mom says no crying in baseball

Fri, 12 May 2017 12:18:49 EDT

The wife of a former first-round Draft pick, daughter-in-law of a longtime Major League coach and mother to three baseball-playing boys, Belinda Garcia has spent much of her life surrounded by the sport. But while Greg Garcia, a utility infielder for the Cardinals, may have learned the sport from his grandfather and father, his mother's impact was equally as significant.
