Daito Manabe & Motoi Ishibashi glorify the invisible at the MCJP

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 14:24:57 +0000

Transphère, a series of installations presenting the work of contemporary Japanese artists, is on the programme at the Japanese Cultural Centre in Paris in 2016. While waiting for creations by the Atelier Bow-Wow & Didier Faustino to be exhibited this summer, followed by Rei Naito this autumn, the famous Datoi Manabe & Motoi Ishibashi, exceptional artist/programmers, unveil Rate-shadow. This is a new digital work, halfway between real and virtual, on view until the 7th May 2016. You may have read that the Transphère series at the Japanese Cultural Centre in Paris aims to question the meaning of art through experimentation. This is a recurring theme regularly proclaimed by cultural structures, yet sometimes leaving visitors disappointed. However in this particular case, fans will pay particular attention to this declaration. Anyhow, it’s already a feat to see the Japanese Cultural Centre in Paris decompartmentalise contemporary creation and present digital works of art. All the more so, this concerns key figures on the digital scene and brilliant computer researchers, Daito Manabe & Motoi Ishibashi, invited to exhibit a new piece. Daito Manabe has already made a name for himself by publishing his stunning performance Face Visualizer on YouTube in 2008. Just like Ryoji Ikeda, famous for his avant-garde installations or Masaki Fujihata in the field of computer graphics and network art, Daito Manabe and his Japanese accomplice have since made a name for themselves in research and development. Aomi Okabe, artistic director of exhibitions at the Japanese Cultural Centre in Paris states that, “Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi, who belong to a generation that grew up on video games, refer to themselves first of all as programmers, developing the programmes and hardware which they use themselves.”   Experimentation-led methodology   Collaborating as directors of Rhizomatiks Research, one of the most innovative Japanese structures with regard to digital creation, the artists, and programmers therefore gain from each other’s respective area of expertise. “As a general rule, Motoi Ishibashi is responsible for engineering, that is all the equipment and mechanics, while for my part I work on the software and electromagnetic waves, such as sound and light”, explains Daito Manabe. The work of the duo is based on continuous experimentation. For them, computer and mechanical research is just as important as the visual result, enough to make it the main requirement for any creative activity. Motoi Ishibashi explains this approach in detail: “The tools used are constantly evolving. We make use of them again and from this point on we imagine what work of art can be produced. It would be complicated to separate research and artistic achievement in our business. They are the two faces of the same coin and indispensable to carry out our work”   Halfway between real and virtual Finally myoelectric sensors, mapping (see Pulse) or lasers (see Robot x Dancers x Lasers), pushed to a high technological standard, become simple tools enabling a tangible area to be created between real and virtual. Their creations come in many forms. Also, choreographed performances directed by Mikiko and performed by the company elevenplay are all magnificent. allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="343" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hX2TneyE41Q" width="610"> drone x spotlight _ elevenplay x rhizomatiks "Shadow"  3 dancers and 24 drones combining several dancers with a horde of flying drones is one of the latest to date. In other cases their inventiveness takes shape through visual installations. Particles, a monumental haze of luminous pixels awarded at the Ars Electronica and Japan Media Arts festivals is perhaps their greatest success.es installations plastiques. MELTING POT

After a worldwide expansion phase, humanity is now experiencing the beginning of a mixing phase where different skin colored people meet and mingle. In a few centuries or a few millennia, shall we all be the same color? Shall all our differences in culture and religion be erased? Shall this harmonization bring us peace at last?

Built with Processing, the « Melting Pot » series runs endlessly on a PC as an .exe file.

The videos are poor screen captures of the animations and are not aimed to be screened.

In « Melting Pot I », hundreds of points mix their color according to the other ones they meet. The slower they move, the slower they harmonize with the others.

BK, currently living (and dying, aren't we all?) in Melbourne has released another excerpt from the up-coming installation work 26 Suicides.

The excerpt currently being released is cheerily titled... Office:Work.
Office:Work. is available free for watching (and free for downloading) here.

'The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.'
- R Frost

26 Suicides is a 27 chapter, non-narrative, new media installation work.  It is the personal and intimate testimony of BK's synesthetic life.  The 26 Suicides installation uses surround sound and multichannel video, employing 8 video channels and 10 audio channels, to create a fully immersive, synesthetic experience for the audience.  26 Suicides will be shown publicly later this year. Limited pre-release excerpts are being made available online and through select gallery showings.

Office:Work. is a brief (2:14) meditation on the nature of work (salary slavery) in modern society.
Office:Work. is a single channel video with stereo audio, offering a taste of the full 26 Suicides installation.

Free listening is available here.
The audio can be downloaded for free here.

incite/ - world premiere - mock-up trailer from incite/ on Vimeo.

The new live-set „beyond the entropic dimension“ questions the idea of time-linearity and further concepts in 7 audiovisual compositions.

The mock-up trailer gives a sneak preview into our premiere preparations:
incite/ @ mojo club, Hamburg, Wednesday, June 17th, 8pm, within the framework of the Blurred Edges Festival

This trailer is based on mock-ups, we´ve collaged ourselves into excerpts of the new pieces - we´ll rock for real in the premiere….

Some more info about the set:
„Beyond the entropic dimension“ gives a critical view at the human perception of reality, dominated by the intuitive understanding of the entropic concept of time-linearity and irreversibility.
Twisted time-vectors, fractal structures, a trip into the all-interconnected wave field, water as an independent life-form reverses the linearity of time, melting of apparent contradictions, a wild chase of the duo´s legendary Lego-avatars through wormholes finally ending in an alien party.
The new live set features 7 entirely self-produced audio-visual pieces: visuals from macroscopics to landscape shots, motion graphics, stop-motion, 3D animation, tightly synced to genuinely electronic music, experimental to unorthodox danceable.

I can't go on, I'll go on

I have been seen seeing, looking...

Tue, 05 May 2015 11:10:27 +0000

'I have been seen seeing, looking' ...a meditation on perception.

allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281px" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/126901213" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500px">

'If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.'
- W Blake

What do we see?

We certainly don't see reality; not normally anyway.
We only see a small part of the spectrum of vibrations that exist - and our hearing covers an even smaller range.
There are many things too small (and many too big) for our sensory apparatus to apprehend.
Then, there are the emotional and cultural filters that shape, and sometimes blind, our ability to see what is really there.
Add to that the fact that our brain can only process a limited sub-set of the data coming through our senses, and in the end, you will see that we don't really see what we think we see.
Not normally anyway.

'There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception.'
- A Huxley

If you have ever indulged in hallucinogens (caution!!! not a recommendation!!!), you would know that LSD, Mescaline, Ayahuasca and other related agents do something like the 'cleansing' Blake longed for (and maybe experienced too - he was a mystic, after all).
The voice in this piece comes from a woman, recorded in 1956, during her participation in an early clinical trial of LSD.
It is a well-known example of someone describing their first-hand experience with the numinous, infinite, and special reality we don't see - normally.
Others have worked with this recording, including M Klink (vimeo.com/112309401).

This short work, 'I have been seen seeing, looking...' is my take on what it means to 'see'.
It is another excerpt from my up-coming installation work, '26 Suicides'.
26 Suicides is a 27 chapter, non-narrative new media installation art work. It is the personal and intimate testimony of my synesthetic life.

It's not all Black and White

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 03:24:13 +0000

'It's not all Black and White' - a paean to the grey space in-between our certainties.

allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="343" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/125374936?color=000000" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="610">
It's not all Black and White from B K

Watch it only if you are not afraid of dangerous modern art.

A statement about this work

In terms of the genetic data that we spring from, there is an almost imperceptible difference between 'black' and 'white' people.
Then of course, we have all those in-between shades of brown, olive, and so-on...

When you stop to think about it, it is kind of amazing that we choose to differentiate ourselves based on such a (literally) superficial, trivial, trait.
But we do, and there you have it - one of the scourges of our existence, the never-ending, futile, fruitless, senseless and hopeless conflict between races.

This little piece, 'It's not all Black and White' is just a simple meditation on the grey spaces that we really inhabit. Grey is the true color of our existence, not in terms of drab, dour or sad, but in terms of uncertainty, ambiguity and subtlety. As I get older, I see fewer hard edge lines, just gradients, blends, and smears of mixed colors and tones. I don't see things in black and white very much at all.

'It's not all Black and White' is another excerpt from my up-coming installation work, '26 Suicides'.

26 Suicides is a 27 chapter, non-narrative new media installation art work. It is the personal and intimate testimony of my synesthetic life. The 26 Suicides installation uses surround sound and multichannel video to deliver an enveloping, synesthetic experience. The videos on Vimeo are excerpts. Parachute Light Zéro Act I

Magdi Mostafa’s light and sound Cairo city rhythm

Thu, 15 Jan 2015 13:00:57 +0000

In the wake of digital events emerging in the country, such as Haytham Nawar’s Di-Egy Fest – whose second edition after 2013 premiere will be organised end of Summer/Fall 2015 –, and of new digital workshop platforms as active as Medrar, an interesting generation of new technologies’ artists is hailing from Egypt. Among them, Magdi Mostafa has recently presented at Townhouse Factory Space, Cairo, his most intriguing piece, The Surface of spectral Scattering. Built as a large scale multichannel light-sound installation, “The Surface of Spectral Scattering diagrams a long-passed affective moment whose presence still persists like a phantom pain, but the memory of which is rapidly receding toward a threshold of imperceptibility”. Concretely, the piece reminds a bit the light-city-concept installation A Digital Experience of Visual System, but put into shape in a more impressive, bigger and almost-spiritual configuration. Occupying 600 square meters, The Surface of Spectral Scattering “translates the city of Cairo into a high energy discharge system with boundaries dictated by a poetic physics of transmission, where human actors play the role of inert conduits charged by abstract, external forces of zeal and fury”. Indeed, the 10,000 hand-embroidered LED light connected in a spreading network pumped by 15 different power centers underline a very dynamic and imperceptibly-changing atmosphere, in which deep sound waves and sparse high frequencies enhance an impression of permanent tension. But the intensive expression of its “light-city physically mapped” refers nonetheless to a more human dimension that would embody deep memories of shouting (protesting?) people whose voices would be rapidly heard through the city before to vanish. A “surface of last screaming”, to use the expression of the artist, that gives here to lights and sounds’ ebb and flow a symbolic and emotional connection in terms of audiovisual language.   For more info on Magdi Mostafa: www.magdimostafa.com For more info on the Townhouse Gallery: www.thetownhousegallery.com Laurent Catala Photos: Image courtesy the artist. Computer Drawings of Peter Beyls

Wed, 03 Dec 2014 10:49:07 +0000

(image)
In a time where computing technology rises often from a field of complex network systems, the computing art that Belgian artist Peter Beyls has been developing for 40 years unfolds a rather comfortable simplicity of access even if processes hidden behind are somehow intriguing as well.

If Peter Beyls has always been a multifaceted creator, interested in processes of behaviour connected to science and biology fields (like in his piece Petri) or to more interactive installation screening real-time processed music and visual animations, the Simple Thoughts exhibition that has been taking place at iMal Brussels focuses more on the technical of automatic drawings - looking like grid systems and made by mechanical programmed machines - he has been creating through years to express his idea of artificial intelligence.

If the first ones of these drawings, from the 1970’s, were based on a kind of abstract randomness, Peter Beyls will then progressively drive his machines towards more self-organized systems from early 1980’s, inducing a growing complexity inside the simple beginnings of this long-time project.

Step by step, his approach has been becoming more speculative, as the interaction of simple components has been keeping generated by machines always more clever – like the robot arms delivering the most recent drawings to be shown at the exhibition. Presented in the same space, each piece introduces then a timeless dialogue, embodied by the contrast between the oldest printed drawings and the virtual window on internet data brought by the four audiovisual installations.
