To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Meiji Era, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will hold a series of exhibitions based on the earliest Japanese photographs, depicting the birthplaces of Japanese photography and reconstructing a visual account of Japan during the mid-nineteenth century. The first of a series of exhibitions, this year we will present “Geneses of Photography in Japan: Nagasaki”. Approximately 150 years ago, the Edo period came to an end and the Japanese government set about the creation of a Western-style nation. Photography arrived in Japan with the opening of the country’s borders, where it was used to capture this period of transition, passing it down to us today. Pierre Joseph Rossier and Felice Beato were among the foreign photographers who visited Nagasaki, leaving numerous photographs. In addition, there were also the early Japanese photographers, including Hikoma Ueno, said to be the founder of Japanese photography, Kuichi Uchida, Keiji Takeshita, Torazō Tamemasa, etc., whose works led to the popularization of photography in this country. Photography soon became established and large numbers of photographs were produced, recording Japan as it moved from a feudal to modern society. This exhibition, welcoming the expert on Nagasaki Dr. Junichi Himeno (Professor Emeritus of Nagasaki University) as an advisor, will not be limited to early photographs but will also present other items connected with the mid-eighteenth century, centered around photographs but also including mounts and album bindings. In addition, it will include maps, paintings, crafts and original works or materials that cross genres, such as projections and large-scale maps, reconstructing an image of the Nagasaki of the late Edo and early Meiji periods from a variety of angles. Kōga was a coterie magazine that was produced for less than two years from 1932 to 1933. Printed in an A4 variant size, with the photographic plates reproduced using one-side offset printing, it contained thirty pages of articles and advertisements. It was an extremely extravagant publication but it is believed that its circulation was limited to only about 500 copies and even when it was being produced, very few people came into contact with it. Presided over by Yasuzō Nojima, who was joined by Ihei Kimura and Iwata Nakayama, it attracted amateurs from the Kansai area (Naniwa Photography Club, Ashiya Camera Club.) and was responsible for the emergence of the ‘Shinkō Shashin’ movement. The magazine introduced works by foreign artists, such as John Heartfield, Edward Steichen, and Eugène Atget while also carrying translations of essays by Franz Roh, Moholy-Nagy, etc., providing information on the foreign art scene. The first issue included an essay by Nobuo Ina entitled, ‘Shashin ni Kaere’ [Return to Photography] that was later acclaimed as being an important assessment of Japanese modern photography. Nojima was one of the central figures in the prewar photographic world while also enjoying an intimate relationship with members of the art world, serving as a patron for such artists as Tetsugoro Yorozu and the potter Kenkichi Tomimoto. The magazine was not limited to photography, but also featured a graphic montage by Masao Horino, an essay on typography by Hiromu Hara, and a discussion on motion pictures with the film director Teinosuke Kinugasa. Although it was of extremely high quality, the gradual rise of social unease and the ever more intrusive effects of the war led to a change in the activities of photographers and the sudden suspension of the publication of Kōga. Kimura and Nakayama, however, continued their energetic endeavors and were to have a profound influence on the postwar photographic scene. By looking at why a magazine of this type was produced when it was and why it suddenly ceased publication after such a short time, we are able to catch a glimpse of Japanese society and culture as it was during the 1930s.

The three-dimensional works of Yone Yonemoto are the result of ideas and concepts born of conversations and experiences. Most of Yonemoto’s creations are not preplanned and his unique creatures are born spontaneously when his hands touch the clay. Yonemoto adds detailed character profiles and stories to the creatures he creates. For this exhibition, new works are on display but Yonemoto keeps it simple with few words, relying mostly on the shape and form of his creatures.

JADICT is portfolio of Japanese creators. Since its launch in June 2011, with the support of many wonderful creators, inclusion in JADICT has become a goal of young artists. As of February 2018, 62 excellent works and 108 creators’ profiles have been posted. JADICT has been a web-based project for the past six years, but will now hold its first group exhibition. Six groups of artists chosen by JADICT, including previously posted creators, present new or previously unreleased works.

“Rock Icons Sukita X Harari” is an exhibition of portraits of legendary 20th century rock musicians taken by photographers Masayoshi Sukita and Guido Harari. Both photographers captured musicians from the 1970s to the 90s, with Sukita mostly working in Japan, the US, and the US, and Harari doing most of his work in Europe. Many of the works are a result of trust and close collaboration between the photographers and the musicians and are more than just snapshots but rather artistic portraits. Although their styles differ, the photographers have mutual respect for each others work, with Sukita exhibiting at Harari’s gallery in Italy. This exhibition in Japan was born out of Harari’s desire to show his work in Japan with its strong rock fanbase. On display at the exhibition are over 40 black & white and color portrait photographs of musicians including David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Peter Gabriel, and Bob Dylan.

This exhibition is the first solo show for Bosisio in Japan, and will consist of new portrait works from recent years, and also selected pieces from the series “interiors” which he has carried out for many years. The work will be shown in 104Galerie and 104Galerie-R. Is a painting by Robert Bosisio abstract or figurative? The reason a viewer might ask such a question is that through differences in the distance from which you view the work, and the light and shadow on it, you can witness a change in the representation effected by the environment. A work may seem like a vague abstract painting from close up, but if you step back and gaze at the whole piece, the outline of an image with a certain presence appears. This effect, unique to the work of Bosisio, is created by the complex textural layers of oil, tempera, ash, sand, wax, and plaster that he uses to paint. His deep thoughts are reflected in the production process as well. Sometimes his techniques of painting landscapes and portraits seem classical, but negotiates with his own abstractness, pursuing his own territory. In that tension, beauty is born and viewers are drawn in. As a close friend and supporter of Bosisio, film director Wim Wenders has published several poems and texts dedicated to him. These texts are filled with his deep insight and emotion towards Bosisio’s art.

This exhibition for the 50th anniversary of the death of painter Léonard Foujita (Tsuguharu Fujita) focuses on book illustrations from the artist’s body of work. Meguro Museum of Art and Foujita have a long relationship – in 1988, the year after its opening, it held the first comprehensive exhibition of Foujita’s book illustrations created in France along with his paintings. Now for the first time in 30 years, the museum presents Foujita’s book illustrations from prewar France, work published in Japan in the 1930s and 1940s, and illustrations from large-format deluxe editions released in 1950 after he repatriated to Japan.

This is the first showing of a collection of children’s picture books collected over a 30-year period by French literature scholar Shigeru Kashima. Along with the development of color lithography, picture books became popular from the mid-19th century, reaching a golden age during the Art Deco movement. This exhibit will include work by cartoon and animation pioneer Benjamin Rabier and others, along with books from the ‘Babar the Elephant’ series first published in 1931. Tokyo Photographic Research (below TPR), is a contemporary photography project initiated by Koyama and Junya Yamamine (curator of Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito). TPR is an endeavor to capture the appearance of Tokyo, heading towards the hosting of the Olympics through researches and works composed via various artists’ perspectives, and aims for the resulting works to be passed on to the post-2020 world. This exhibition, the first of many TPRs to come, features the latest installation piece by Taisuke Koyama ー who returned to Japan at the end of last year after four years of stay in London and Amsterdam — composed of both photography and video works created via his field research of Tokyo. Throughout the years, the unique qualities of Tokyo has attracted many photographers, who documented the state of its transformation—of each generation and through each individual perspective—by means of various methodologies. Koyama too, chose Tokyo as the field of his photography, just as he was starting his career as a photographer in the beginning of 2000s, and the resulting photobook, entropix, published in 2008, display Koyama’s attempts to capture vividly, the surface of the city — which he interpreted as an organically modifying phenomenon — through a microscopic point-of-view; this marked the beginning of his venture into the practice of abstract and experimental photography. In 2009, he presented Rainbow Form (2009), a close-up photography work of rainbow colored advertisement posters, and the series Rainbow Variations, which derived five variations until 2016: Melting Rainbow (2010), Rainbow Waves (2013), Seventh Depth (2014), Pico (2015), and the video work Pico – Infinity / Pico – Flash (2016), is widely known as Koyama’s most representative work, demonstrating his pursuit of the possibilities of the essential elements of photography — reproduction, iteration, and the fluidity of the digital image. Starting with a piece consisted of error images, which result from use of the data recovery software in the restoration process of his purposefully deleted photographs of Tokyo and a piece displaying the perceptual discord arising from contact between the projected image and the surface the image is projected on, in this exhibition, we showcase Koyama’s latest oeuvre, where he set Tokyo as its motif once again. The images, which not only embody the possibilities arising through technological advancements, but also their fallacies and misuse, reveal his consistent research on the constantly renewing history of photography and image making.
