STP Frontman Scott Weiland Dies on Tour Bus
KNAC Radio out of Los Angeles, and now Billboard Magazine and other sources, are reporting that former STP frontman Scott Weiland, 48, has been found dead on his tour bus in Minnesota. Weiland and his latest band The Wildabouts were scheduled to perform in Medina, Minnesota this evening at the Medina Entertainment Center, whose web site shows tonight's show as cancelled.

The vocalist was known for fronting the bands Stone Temple Pilots, as well as the "Supergroup" Velvet Revolver, bands with which he saw his greatest success. His solo efforts proving less so, Weiland's problems with substance abuse, and his often contentious relationships with bandmates, the music press, and fans led him down a difficult path.

More updates as they come in...

Suicidal Tendencies at ACL Live
(image) by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer
Los Angeles based Suicidal Tendencies is one of the bands opening for Slayer on their current tour, and despite 30+ years of road duty, frontman Mike Muir shows no apparent signs of slowing down. Running from side to side on stage through the whole set, he's still every bit the thrash punk I used to skate too back in the 80s.

Suicidal Tendencies will be touring with Slayer for the rest of their 2014 dates and then have some headlining gigs in December. For a list of tour dates check their site at

Formed in Richmond California, thrash metal band Exodus is the opener for Slayer on their current tour, with guitarist Gary Holt doing double duty and filling in for fallen guitarist Jeff Hanneman during Slayer's headline set.

Exodus will be touring with Slayer for the rest of their 2014 dates and then have some gigs of their own in December. For a list of tour dates check their web site at

Concert Review: Primus at ACL Live
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

Primus returned to Austin last night, for the umpteenth time, to perform a unique two set show to a sold out crowd of fans at ACL Live. Austin has long been a favorite tour stop for the band and it's frontman Les Claypool on his many weird and wonderful side projects.

With a bare stage Primus first set was a solid covering of some, but not all, of the bands hits and crowd favorites. Starting with "Too Many Puppies" the band skipped around their career arc hitting "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver", "My Name Is Mud", and others before wrapping the first set with "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver".

After a brief break to build the set and don masks and costumes, the band returned to perform a multimedia performance of their vision of Willie Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's soundtrack. I always found the original film with Gene Wilder more than a bit dark and disturbed but in Les Claypool and Primus hands the music and film takes on a whole new level of twisted, weird, and creepy, like clown paintings by a mass murderer.

With oompa loompas appearing infrequently amongst giant candies and huge inflatable mushrooms Primus with The Fungi Ensemble, led by Claypool wearing a red wig, top hat, and mask proceeded to soundtrack the film, as snippets culled from the movie played on a giant screen behind the band. Favorite songs from the movie such as "Candyman", "Pure Imagination", and "Golden Ticket" were recognizable but just barely as Claypool and his consorts twisted their harmonies into a spooky disquieting melange.

I'm going to start having the oompa loompa nightmares again.

Primus current tour wraps in Escondido, CA this Saturday but the band has a few "one off" gigs in December and January. For a list of tour dates check their site at

Oderus Ungerous casts off mortal coil
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

Dave Brockie, known to fans of legendary heavy metal act GWAR as Oderus Ungerous from the planet Scumdogia, was found dead in his home in New York yesterday, leaving fans of the band in a state of shock worldwide.

Known for their shock and awe stage shows that often brutalized effigies of political and cultural figureheads with a chainsaw and always left audiences covered in multicolored goo fired from phallic shaped cannons, Dave Brockie's band pushed the boundaries of theater, music, taste, and wet-dry vacs worldwide.

I saw GWAR 4 or 5 times, met Dave once, and was friends with him on Facebook for many years, often chatting with him privately between tours. We always said we were going to connect "next tour" for a beer, but we never seemed to get our schedules to mesh.

Rest in peace Oderus.

The world will be considerably less sticky with your passing, but substantially less interesting.

Slayer at Auditorium Shores, Austin Texas
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

Thrash metal titans Slayer made a triumphant return to Austin's Auditorium Shores on Sunday night, sneaking in one more outdoor show before the winter chill set in on the river city.

With a set that pays tribute to their fallen guitarist, the late Jeff Hanneman, the fall tour ends in Lowell Massachusetts Nov. 30th. Slayer has just one more Texas stop, Dallas on Wednesday, before they take a winter tour break. For a list of their remaining tour dates check their web site at

They Might Be Giants at Stubb's BarBQ
(image) by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer
One of the funnest bands to see perform live, They Might Be Giants stopped in at Austin's Stubb's BarBQ to play to an enthusiastic house of fans last night, launching into a variety of crowd favorites that quickly had the audience engaged. Frontmen John Flansburgh and John Linnell know how to entertain crowds from 8 to 80 and it makes each live gig an experience.

They Might Be Giants will be touring the UK in November. For a list of tour dates check their site at

Slayer's Jeff Hanneman passes at 49

by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

Jeff Hanneman, guitarist, lyricist, and one of the founding members of the legendary and influential thrash-metal band Slayer, has passed away at 49 from liver failure, according to a press release from the bands management.

Hanneman, who has not performed with the Slayer since 2011 while he recovered from necrotizing fasciitis from a spider bite, was instrumental in writing many of the bands more well known songs, and was know for his interest in military history, which caused controversy with some of the bands lyrics. When I last met Jeff, during the recording of the World Painted Blood album in Los Angeles in 2009, we spoke at length about his interests, and I gave him some history books to read on the 2010 tour.

Jeff is survived by his wife of 16 years Kathy, two brothers, Michael and Larry and sister Kathy. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Willie Nelson concert now benefit for West Volunteer Fire Department

by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

According to a statement posted on the Austin American Statesman web site, legendary Texas entertainer Willie Nelson has changed his scheduled concert at The Backyard April 28, just outside Austin in Bee Cave, into a fundraiser for the West Volunteer Fire Department, devastated by Wednesday's explosion.

“West is just a few miles from my hometown of Abbott,” Nelson said in a statement. “I was born and raised here and it was my backyard growing up. This is my community. These friends and neighbors have always been and are still a part of my life. My heart is praying for the community that we call home.”

Willie Nelson had previously been scheduled to perform with family members Paula Nelson and Lucas Nelson, but as a fundraiser I would expect additions to the lineup from a variety of Austin and Texas based artists, as well as friends of Willie and the Nelson family. It wouldn't be surprising to see Billy Gibbons and the rest of ZZ Top, Lyle Lovett or any number of other Texas artists end up on the schedule as Texas pulls together to help it's own.

For tickets and more info please visit

UPDATE: 04/19/2013 - "The State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association said Friday morning that it believes 11 firefighters died in the explosion, including four who were emergency medical service personnel."

Steel Panther - Sound Academy - Toronto

Photos and review by Jess Watt - Staff Photographer

Steel Panther - Sound Academy - Toronto - Aug 9th, 2012

"Going to a Steel Panther show is like going back to high school in the late 1980s: Big hair, tight pants, make up, glitter, and a lot of cock.
If this doesn't sound like your high school, Steel Panther gives you the chance to experience it whether it be your first time or tenth time.
The foursome, straight off Sunset Blvd know how to both rock it and give many many many laughs along the way. You can't help but laugh along with them and their songs like, " "Asian Hooker", "Fat Girl", "Eatin' Ain't Cheatin" and "Gold Digging Whore."
If you missed the glam rock era, Steel Panther is your chance to go back in time, cheesy guitar solos and everything.
Check out their weekly shows in both Las Vegas and LA"

Stray Cat Lee Rocker talk's about Austin's RevivalFest
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Writer

Lee Rocker, who along with "Slim" Jim Phantom, and Brian Setzer and their band The Stray Cats breathed life back into the rockabilly scene in the early 80s, will be bringing his own band to Austin as one of the headliners for Memorial Weekend's Revival Festival in downtown Austin.

I had a chance to catch up with Lee and talk about the Revival Fest, some of his influences, and what it was like to be an emerging artist in the music scene in the UK during such an important time.

Click on the link below to listen.
This years revival fest features Reverend Horton Heat, Nekromantix, Lee Rocker, Three Bad Jacks, Psycho Devilles, The Smites (Tribute to The Smiths), Rosie Flores, Holy Moly!, Johnny Hootrock, and the Hot Rod Hillbillies. It is Saturday, May 26th, Memorial Weekend 7th St & Trinity Ave, Austin TX 78701, located in the heart of Downtown Austin. For tickets and more info see

James Durbin at Stubb's BarBQ
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

I don't quite know what to make of American Idol runner-up James Durbin. Opening for Evanescence was a good spot for him to get some seasoning, and he has a strong band behind him. But he definitely needs to put some miles on his show.

James Durbin and his band will be touring the states all May. To check out his tour schedule see his site at

Evanescense at Stubb's BarBQ, Austin, Texas
(image) by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

Amy Lee and the current rev of Evanescense stopped at Austin's Stubb's BarBQ to play to a sold out crowd a few days before she is set to play the Johnny Cash tribute at ACL Live as one of the feature performers.

The band delivered a solid show to an audience that varied greatly in age, with a large number of pre-teen girls dragging parents around in tow. Mixing hits from their monster debut studio album Fallen with songs from 2006's The Open Door and last years self-titled release Evanescense they had a robust set list to work from.

Evanescense will spend the summer touring overseas - too see where they are now go to

Todd Rundgren at La Zona Rosa, Austin, Texas
(image) (image) by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

The "Hermit of Mink Hollow" Todd Rundgren brought his tour through town last night, and despite being sick as a dog, somehow managed to make it through his set in Austin, though it took a little help from audience members. He sounded like the "Old Todd Rundgren" when he talked, but it all went to hell went he started singing.

It's gotta be a frustrating and tough decision to make when an artist is ill. They want too, but can't, deliver the experience the audience wants, and yet they don't want to cancel, which would also disappoint the audience. A real damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. We hope Todd get's better soon!

Lacuna Coil at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, Austin, Texas
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

Goth metal band Lacuna Coil from Milan, Italy opened the Megadeth "Gigantour" in Austin, putting on a strong show that seem to surprise many concert goers. It's not often you hear thrash metal fans talking up a female vocalist, but Andrea Ferro and the rest of the band have the chops to keep up, and since forming in 1994 have lots of experience to back it up.

The band has 4 Central/South American dates at the end of March before heading home to Europe. For more info see

California pioneer thrash metal band Megadeth closed out their "Gigantour" in Austin, sans tourmates Motorhead, who cancelled due to frontman Lemmy Kilmister's illness. Though some fans were disappointed, fans of Megadeth, as well as the openers, got treated to longer sets.

Dave Mustaine and crew will tour the east coast and midwest in May. For tour info see

Guitar legend Ronnie Montrose passes away
width="400" height="300" src="" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

1970's guitar rock icon Ronnie Montrose, whose blistering leads inspired and paved the way for much of the guitar driven rock heard today, lost his battle with cancer yesterday.

With a career that started in 1969, over the years the 64 year old Denver native led a number of his own bands as well as performing with a staggering number of musicians, including Sammy Hagar, Herbie Hancock, Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, Gary Wright, Tony Williams, The Neville Brothers, Dan Hartman, Edgar Winter and Johnny Winter just to name a few.

Gladys Knight at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, Austin, Texas

The Empress of Soul, Gladys Knight, still has it,and tonight she brought it to a sold out ACL Live show at the Moody Theater. Even at 67 the singer shows no signs of slowing down, releasing a new single just last year.

Gladys Knights current tour takes a break after their Auburn Hills, MI show on March 6, but starts back up in Washington state on Match 30. For tour info see

Earth, Wind, and Fire at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, Austin, Texas
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

Keeping the seventies alive, Earth, Wind, & Fire blew into town and sold out ACL Live at the Moody Theater at the foot of Austins swanky W Hotel. Though it was a reserved seat show, no one on the floor remained in their seats very long, as it is understandably hard not to dance as they tore through their deep catalog of hits.

Earth, Wind, & Fire are celebrating their 40th anniversary with this tour, the US leg of which ends in Bossier City, LA on March 10th. For info see

Formed in 2000 by former Tripping Daisy frontman Tim DeLaughter, the Dallas Texas based choral-psychedelia group The Polyphonic Spree packed up their van (it must be a big one) and stopped at La Zona Rosa to fill the stage with sights and sounds, and people, and doing a wicked "Tommy/Pinball Wizard" cover.

The Polyphonic Spree hits the road again at the end of March with a tour of the West Coast. For info see

Willie Nelson's New Years at ACL Live at the Moody Theater Austin, Texas

by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

It is appropriate that Austin's resident musical legend be the artist to both open and close the first year of ACL Live at the Moody Theater. After all - it is on his street :)

And it's also appropriate that Willie be the one to start the 2012 festivities there as well, and his two night New Years showcase with family and friends certainly filled the bill.

Along with a variety of family members, including son Lukas who got his own set, Willie invited long time friend, and country music legend, Ray Price to perform for this special holiday show.

For those planning ahead, I don't know if the New Years for 2012/2013 promises two nights of Willie but its never too soon to start asking.

Better Than Ezra at ACL Live at the Moody Theater Austin, Texas

Frat house favorites, New Orleans based Better Than Ezra managed to squeeze in a post- Christmas gig at ACL Live last night, plowing through a variety of hits that made them famous in the 90s'.

Bringing along fellow Cajuns Cowboy Mouth to open, the show was just the thing to blast away the post-holiday blues.

Nick Lowe at ACL Live at the Moody Theater Austin, Texas
(image) by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

It was difficult to tell who drew more of Austin's music fans to the Moody Theater, Wilco the headliner, or British songwriter Nick Lowe who has a relationship with Austin that stretches all the way to January 25, 1978 the Armadillo, when he and Dave Edmunds and their band Rockpile opened for Elvis Costello and the Attractions. That show turned out to be a seminal influence in Austin's own nascent alternative music scene, and sparked dozens if not hundreds of local bands.

Noted in the audience were Austin Chronicle writer Raoul Hernandez, singer Aimee Walden and her guitarist husband Micheal Moyer, and Austin singer-songwriter-author Jesse Sublett, who like I was at that early Austin gig 30+ years ago. Click here for more pics of Nick Lowe.

Slayer thrashes Austin's Auditorium Shores
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

Slayer's Kerry King has an infamous tattoo on his left bicep that he like to point out from time to time that says "GOD HATES US ALL" and I couldn't help but feel that sentiment as I rose from a bed that had spent most of the night spinning. I rarely drink anymore, and then usually only with Kerry so the skill set I acquired at college(s) had long ago run their course.

As the hot water spraying on my forehead rolled down my neck and back, any soothing feelings I hoped for were blocked by the steady constant THROB THROB THROB at my temple and the naked glare of the incandescent bulbs above the sink. Though I was looking forward to the show, I knew it would be a long row to hoe to actually gear up, drive down, park and then hike the half mile across the river that is Austin's Town Lake down to Auditorium shores, with about 50 pounds of gear. THROB THROB THROB.

Throwing my gear in the car I headed off into Austin, arriving at parking garage an hour later, at about 5:00pm. Popping into Thundercloud for some needed rations, a large chicken salad sub on wheat, provolone, and black olives, I washed it down with the largest Mountain Dew they had, along with 800mg of Ibuprofin. By the time I had passed the Occupy Austin camp and crossed the bridge the combination of calories, caffeine, pain killer, and blood flow had made my head clear just in time for - the dust.

The Cure announce new live album
(image) Still working on a new studio album, English alternative goth legends The Cure have announced a new live album release, taken from their appearance at this years Bestival 2011 on the Isle of Wight. Robert Smith said “We had such a great time in the Isle of Wight at Bestival that we wanted to release this show as a way of thanking fans and islanders alike."

The album is scheduled to drop December 6th with all profits from the sale going to the Isle of Wight Youth Trust, a charitable organization offering counseling and support services to young people on the Isle of Wight.

No word on whether a tour will follow to support the release, but we can hope.

Hanging out with Slayer on Austin's 6th Street
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer
"No, I'm pretty sure I'd know if I'd seen someone like that..."

The diminutive hostess at the Driskill's downstairs bar looked me up and down and her eyes told me I was way way under dressed to be hanging out at the Driskill.

Camo shorts, Motorhead T-Shirt, and Black Converses were definitely not on the acceptable list at the ritzy 19th Century downtown Austin hotel that charges $300 a night and hosts Austin's largest ghost population. But I had no choice - the text said to meet at the Driskill, in the bar and so I pulled up a stool, ordered a Tanqueray & tonic, no fruit, and waited. After a second round, close to an hour later, I noticed that I was the last one there and they were closing up. The upstairs bar was still open, so I wandered up.

The place was packed end to end with UT fans and wedding parties, the noise like a flock of geese at feeding time. Retreating down the stairs I grabbed a chair in the lobby, and started checking my phone messages. After a half our of this I began to compose an apology message, prepping myself to bail. It was a beautiful message, filled with flowery halve truths about being up early to milk cows and the like. Before I could hit the send button, under the phone I noticed a black pair of combat boots standing three feet right in front of me. I knew before glancing up it was - Slayer!

Slayer's Kerry King enjoys a Jägermeister on Austin's 6th Street.

The B-52s at Stubb's BarBQ, Austin, Texas
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

It's hard to go to a B-52's concert and not have fun, and tonight's gig at Stubb's was no exception. For a band that that is celebrating their 35th anniversary, they sound and look great, even if Fred isn't quite the dancer he was way back when they were just a "college" band out of Athens and I was a high school student hanging out Raul's and Club Foot.

It's hard to see the band and not reminisce over their long career arc. I still miss Ricky Wilson's distinctive surf twang, and though the 52's have done well in finding fill in's, there won't ever truly be a replacement. If we are really, really lucky we will get to see the B-52's for a few more years before they retire like their compatriots from Athens, R.E.M.

Anthrax at Emo's East, October 29, 2011
(image) (image) by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

New York City's thrash metal masters Anthrax, with frontman Joey Belladona and Scott Ian, brought their tour to the brand new Emo's East, a huge(by club standards) new music venue that occupies the former Back Room location on East Riverside.

I don't know if the show sold out or not, but it was packed with fans of Austin's metal scene, including 101x's "No Control" Chuck Loesch looking like the notorious Viking Erik the Red with his infamous flowing red beard.

With supporting acts Death Angel and Testament opening this was a great thrash metal warm up for this Sundays Slayer gig at Auditorium Shores. For the complete Anthrax/Testament tour schedule check out

Death Angel at Emo's East, October 29, 2011
(image) by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

With a set that was as fast as it was loud and frantic, Death Angel's frontman Mark Osegueda's natty dreads were mostly a blur as he dashed around Emo's stage. Opening for thrash legends Testament and Anthrax, the Concord, California's based band is trying hard to show the old school some new tricks and are doing a damn good job. (image) (image)
by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

L.A. based Weird Al Yankovic brought banjos and accordions to the ACL Live stage last night, making up for a missed appearance at last years Fun Fun Fun Fest.

The audience was full of kids of all ages, regardless of actual age, and included long time Austin guitarist Eric Johnson, who watched on while Weird Al wheeled and reeled through a succession of his MTV hits at a frenetic pace.

Weird Al's current tour winds its way through the south, then up the east coast before finally ending up in Los Angeles in November.

deadmau5 at the Austin Music Hall, Austin Texas
(image) by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

I don't usually cover D.J.s but deadmau5 isn't really your ordinary D.J. and his shows are more than just a rave or dance party . His stop last night at the Austin Music Hall was no exception.

With a light show that would make Pink Floyd envious, a list of guest D.J.s that included Motley Crues Tommy Lee, and a walk on vocal performance by Sofi the show was more like a full blown concert event than a rave. deadmaus5 is partying again tonight at the Music Hall but this show is sold out.

City Gears Up for ACL Festival Safety Mission
With the City of Austin's surrounding areas recovering from a devastating outbreak of wildfires, and with the threat of more fires undiminished, the City of Austin is gearing up for it's 10th ACL Festival in Austin's Zilker Park this weekend. Held in the greenbelt area of the park known as "The Great Lawn" and surrounded by live oaks and other trees, an estimated 70,000-100,000 people will attend some or all of this weekends Festival, either as concert-goers or as staff. Even though thousands of gallons of water from Lake Austin have helped keep Zilker green during the drought, City and Park officials this week are making a huge effort to remind Festival goers that smoking has been banned in all City of Austin parks due to the extreme wildfire hazard, and that does include Zilker Park during this weekends ACL Festival. We had a chance to discuss safety and security during the ACL Festival with the City of Austin's Parks Department Special Events Coordinator Jason Maurer and Victor Ovalle from the City's Public Information Office, and what they told us was both reassuring and somewhat disconcerting. While the City has gone to great lengths to make sure everyone has a safe and fun show, and a tremendous number of City agencies, from police, fire and EMS to event code enforcement are involved in the safety planning and execution, most of the burden of the safety and security for the event rests in the hands of the event promoters, C3 Presents, who declined to participate in this article. Additionally security and safety information, including emergency exit information, was unavailable due to Homeland Security restrictions. In events such as these an event promoter, in this case C3 Presents, leases a park from the City of Austin for a certain period of time subject to certain restrictions and with a number of requirements, including an event safety plan. Once the promoters lease on the park starts it is much like a renting an apartment, everything beyond the doorway is the renters responsibility and the property owner, in this case the City of Austin, can only enter the property under specific terms during that period. In layman's terms, from Festival setup through breakdown, the City Park becomes private property of C3 Presents. City planning for the event occurs year round and involves everything from closing streets and re-routing traffic to food safety and other safety and emergency concerns. Every department involved in the ACL Festival, which is just about every department it seems, "has a role at the table" in the regular planning meetings with all departments serving as part of an "infinite command" model according to Ovalle. These plans include the regular day to day activity plans, tr[...]

Safety Questions about Austin's ACL Festival
After C3 Presents declined to participate in our article about concert safety at their ACL Festival event in Austin, two weeks ago we went in search of someone at the City of Austin's Information Office. After a few days we received a response from Jason Maurer Sales and Events Manager in the Office of Special Events at the Austin Parks and Recreation Department who indicated he would be happy to answer our questions and arrange a conference call. Last week we submitted the following questions, and as yet are still waiting on both a response and a conference call. What City Agencies are involved in ACL Festival (or what aren't)? Who is the overall head of the security and safety planning aspects of the ACL festival, both organization and name if possible? What City Departments are involved with the safety and security aspects of the Event? What City Permits are required to have the ACL event? What City Permits are required to erect portable stages at ACL or any other event in the City of Austin? What inspections of portable stages are required, made, and by who at ACL or any other event in the City of Austin? Are events of this nature required to submit an overall safety plan for the event, and if so to who? Does the Festival have a mass evacuation plan? In the event of a disaster requiring evacuation of the park facility, who would be in charge on scene? How many first responders will be on site for the event? Are there plans in place for a multi-casualty disaster that eclipses their capabilities or resources to respond on site? Have the first responders or private security and medical agencies received specific instruction or training on a mass casualty situation at this event? Access to/from the event is very controlled both by nature of the event and the geographic nature of the park. The map provided on ACL Festivals web site is not very clear or specific about exits. Even a $29.00 hotel has to provide a map of their exits to their customers. How will exit information be communicated? How many regular exits does the park venue have that are public accessible? How many emergency exits does the park have that are accessible to anyone? How is the event planning on communicating emergency information to it's audience should a disaster occur? We have further questions as well, we hope to get the opportunity to ask them. [...]

Where are the exits? At a concert it could be a matter of life or death.
It was a cold night in West Warwick, Rhode Island, just above freezing, when the crowd made their way into The Station nightclub. Just another tour stop for the evening's headlining band, Great White, the night would end in a disaster unparalleled in rock and roll history when a quick moving fire ignited by the band's pyrotechnics swept through the packed club in just 5½ minutes. When the cold morning light came the death toll would climb to 100 - concertgoers, workers, and members of the band and crew. Another 230 were injured, many of them critically. It was only after this disaster that the hard questions were asked, too late for the families of the dead and injured. In the ensuing investigations many people were faulted, including the City's fire inspectors, with the club owners, and Great White's tour manager serving prison sentences. The investigation revealed how tragically critical the crushing stampede for the main exit was. Although there were four possible exits, most patrons headed for the front door and the stampede quickly blocked the exit resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. This week will be interviewing some survivors of The Station fire, talking about what happened during and after the fire, about how a concert forever changed their lives in just 5½ minutes, and about just how important it is to know where all the exits are. When it comes time it could be a matter of life or death. It is important to know where all the exits are, unfortunately none of the ACL Festival maps that we could find include that information. The stampede to the main exit at The Station contributed greatly to the toll of dead and injured, and at that concert out of 458 people in attendance, 100 died. Most people attending the ACL Festival will only be aware of the main entrance as well, certainly without a better map, and there will be close to 100,000 people in attendance. Just to update: we were promised a conference call by the City of Austin but that has not occurred as yet, and they have not responded to the questions that we forwarded them. Should either happen we will post it here. We have heard nothing further from our requests for information to C3 Presents since they declined to participate, but we will note that both entities have responded to requests for the same information by the Austin American Statesman, although we asked prior. We hope that the Statesman has the follow through to do more than publish a one of article full of sound bytes and softball questions, since neither entity involved with the ACL Fes[...]

Indiana State Fair Disaster Claims 6th Victim
The associated press has posted an article stating that a another person has died of injuries sustained in the stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair, making the stage collapse death toll now six.

Governor Announces Fair Investigation; Festival Death Toll in Belgium Rises to 5; No Universal Standards For Stages
Under pressure from the media Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels has announced an independent investigation into the stage collapse in at the Stat Fair after questions were raised about the State Fair's ability to investigate itself and be forthcoming. To see all the news available on Google about the stage collapse in Indiana click here. The death toll from the European concert tragedy in Belgium has risen to 5 and the Festival itself has been canceled as European music fans were stunned by the storm that also injured 150 on Thursday. Among the acts who had been scheduled to perform included the Foo Fighters, Eminem, and 30 Seconds to Mars. To see all the news on this tragedy from Google click here. "Three different storms, three different cities – and, crucially, three different stages, built by different companies using different specs and different safety standards." An article by Steve Pond at TheWrap and posted through Reuters reports that there are no universal standards for concert stages. "These collapses highlight the fact that there are no enforced guidelines for temporary structures in the concert business," said Gary Bongiovanni, the publisher of the concert-industry trade journal Pollstar and quoted in the article. "There are some guidelines," "but they're voluntary. And it'll be hard to put enforced rules in place, because on a concert tour you're dealing with the local laws in every city." We have contacted the City of Austin and when they respond some of our questions will be what are the rules and laws, what inspections are made and by who, and what permits are required to erect temporary stages at Austin events such as the upcoming ACL Festival, Fun Fun Fun Fest, and SXSW, all of which occur all or in part on City of Austin parkland and property. ACL Festival: Overview of Zilker Park
Zilker Park is a City Of Austin owned and operated park that comprises over 350 acres of publicly owned land in the heart of south Austin. Named after its benefactor Andrew Jackson Zilker, who donated the land to the city in 1917, it was developed into the park by the Civilian Conservation Corps. during the Great Depression in the 1930s and many of it's structures and designs date from or are based on that era. In addition to the ACL Festival the park serves as a home for many recreational sports and activities and the hike and bike trail around Lady Bird Lake, both of which run next to the park. According to the city of Austin Parks Foundation web site the Soccer Fields in Zilker Park, where the Austin City Limits Music Festival takes place, was scheduled to be closed from January through June of 2009 for a complete revamping including installation of automatic irrigation, field leveling and resodding with grass. "The project will take 2-3 months to complete and then another 2-3 months to allow the grass to become established." In the end the area referred too as the "Great Lawn" reopened in late August of 2009 after being closed for nearly a year during the $2.5 million renovation project. Zilker Park gets green carpet treament: In an agreement with the City Of Austin, C3 Presents, Austin City Limits Music Festival producers, donated funding for the improvements, including an irrigation system, drinking fountains and 46 acres of turf replacement to support use of the park. That new sod was heavily damaged less than 2 months later during the 2009 ACL Festival event after sudden storms brewed up and soaked the festival, requiring replacement and repair of areas referred to as "mud pits" according to the Austin American Statesman. According to the newspaper the "weight of the 65,000 festival-goers each day pushed the mud up through the newly planted sod, which was drenched by Saturday rains" and "most of the grounds appeared to be covered with mud Monday". But it wasn't all just mud, as the Festival had dumped 800 bales of hay during the weekend to try to absorb some of the moisture and it also contained Dillo Dirt, a fertilizer the city had laid down before the new grass was planted. Dillo Dirt is a compost the city makes from treated sewage sludge and yard trimmings collected curbside and the combination left festival goers a foul smelling mud caked mess. Luckily "It is commonly used in backyard gardening and poses no health threat" sa[...]

4 More Festival Deaths in Belgium Raise ACL Festival Safety Questions
The death of four more fans in yet another weather related festival catastrophe, this time in Belgium, just after a similar disaster in Indianapolis resulted in five deaths, and the stage collapse that narrowly missed killing the band Cheap Trick in Canada, have many fans and officials in North America and Europe beginning to question the safety plans, policies, and procedures at these sometimes massive events. Austin had one close call this year after a near disaster at Auditorium Shores during SXSW that already raised safety concerns locally and music fans in Austin will see another major festival in just a few weeks, with C3 Presents massive ACL Festival. Ticket holders may be wondering what steps and plans C3, the ACL Festival, and the City of Austin have for such an emergency.

And we are too.

Amy Winehouse found dead at home
(image) English singer Amy Winehouse, 27, was found dead in her home in London this morning. The troubled star, pictured here in this photo by Gary Miller at Coachella in 2007, had long battled drugs and alcohol and her most recent performance weeks ago ended after being booed off a Belgrade stage.

Winehouse joins an infamous list of rock stars who died at 27 including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones and Kurt Cobain, all who struggled with drugs, alcohol, and fame and left a legacy that far outlived many of their contemporaries.

Coheed & Cambria bass player busted before gig
In what has to be one of the more sad and bizarre music stories, Micheal Todd, bass player for Coheed & Cambria was arrested tonight for armed robbery after he allegedly held up a Walgreens by claiming he had a bomb and escaping in a cab with a supply of Oxycontin. Police traced the cab to the venue in Massachusetts and arrested the musician before the band had taken the stage at the Comcast center where they were opening for Soundgarden.

No word has been released from the band or its publicist has been released as yet regarding the incident or how this will impact the bands upcoming tour plans, including their stop in Brazil opening for Metallica. Stay tuned for more as the story develops. Their last stop in Austin was in April.

Updated 07/11/11 07:30: The band has released the following statement on their Facebook page:
Michael Todd was arrested today on what we consider very serious charges and therefore he will not be finishing up the current tour. Wes Styles, long time member of the Coheed family will take on bass duties starting tomorrow for the remaining dates. No shows will be canceled.

Austin City Limits Live Presents: Bootsy Collins at the Moody Theatre
by Robin Lardie - Staff Writer and Photographer

Last Sunday night, Austin hosted Rock n Roll Hall of Famer William "Bootsy" Collins and his all-star 13 piece band.

And what a night it was! The evening started with Mrs. Patti Collins and the "Bootsy Girls" greeting the crowd and introducing some of her husbands students at "Funk University", his online bass instruction school.I’d guess by looking that the students were an average age of about 13 and they took a few of them spoke briefly to the audience about how much they had learned and are enjoying studying with the funk prodigy.

The lights go dim, the crowd chants ""Boot…SAY"…"Boot…SAY" over and over, cue lights and large entourage of some of the most talented names in funk enter the stage from both the right and left.

Thirteen in total including a head-to-toe purple sequined Bootsy, complete with matching top hat and large yellow plume attached.

ACL Live to keep on playing through glass storm
The way the press keeps playing it up it would seem a veritable storm of glass is being shed from Austin's new W Hotel, but in reality the number of panels that have plummeted has been small, and engineers are already swarming over the now temporarily closed hotel removing glass panels and causing traffic tie ups downtown.

Also located in the W Hotel is Austin's latest live music venue, ACL Live at the Moody Theater, and though they have shut down todays events they plan on playing through the crisis.

According to ACL Live "No changes have been made to ACL Live's ongoing schedule. We have postponed tonight's Wine Down Wednesday event in order to give the engineers the freedom needed to carry out their duties."

So ACL Live concert ticket holders fear not, your show will go on.

I Am Abomination posts new track, announces EP
Taylor, MI’s I Am Abomination has posted a brand new track "Abduction" on their official Facebook page. Part of their the upcoming new digital EP, Passion Of The Heist, to be released on July 19th, 2011, the EP includes guest appearances, including an appearance by ATTACK ATTACK’s Caleb Shomo on the track "Ascension".

""Abduction" is the first song I wrote for Passion Of The Heist," says guitarist Nick Sampson. "The result was beyond my expectation. It’s one of the more laid back songs on the EP technicality wise, but what it lacks in technicality, it makes up for in diversity and great structure."

The digital EP is being released by Good Fight Music, the same label that released I Am Abomination’s first critically acclaimed full-length album, To Our Forefathers.

Weezer's Two Night Stand at Stubb's BarBQ, Austin, Texas
by jeff barringer - staff writer & photographer Weezers infectious brand of pop mixed with an alternative edge has stood them well over the years, building them a huge following of devoted fans, who all seemed to turn out for both nights to fill Austin's Stubb's BarBQ to max capacity and then some, for the bands' way sold out stop in Austin. Despite temperatures well over 100 in the tightly packed crowd, fans and band alike appeared to be having a blast, and by the second night Weezer had really "settled in, with frontman Rivers Cuomo kicking a soccer ball around the stage and interacting a lot more with the crowd from the pit, much to the distress of his concerned tour manager. Fans without tickets lining the pavement outside of the venue may have actually gotten to see some of Tuesdays show as the Los Angeles based power pop bands' Cuomo led the audience in a singalong from the roof of the venue of "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived". Precariously perched on the corrugated tin roof of the smokehouse and inviting attack from the local raccoons by shaking the trees, Cuomo returned to the stage for the third song, only to later pelt the audience with rolls of toilet paper. Both shows were divided into two sets, a set of favorites first, then after a short break a full album. Monday night's crowd got Weezers debut album, Blue, while Tuesday's show got the cult favorite Pinkerton. There was little crossover between the 2 [...]
