Cyber Monday Shopping Tips From FTC

(object) (embed)
  • Read reviews. Type the name of the product or company into a search engine along with words like “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” Be sure to read a few reviews — don’t rely on just one source.
  • Look for coupon codes. Search the store’s name with terms like “coupons,” “discounts,” or “free shipping.”
  • Know the terms. Find out what the refund/exchange policies are, and if there are any charges (like shipping costs or restocking fees) if you return a product.
  • Pay by credit card. Credit cards give you protections that other methods of payment may not. If there’s a problem, you have the right to dispute charges and temporarily withhold payment while your dispute is investigated.
  • Use secure checkout. Before you enter your credit card information online, check that the website address starts with “https”. The “s” stands for secure.  If you don’t see the “s,” don’t enter your information.

Mobile Shopping For Black Friday And Beyond.

Black Friday shopping is on everyone' mind these days and Google Adwords telling us how to leverage the Google tools for the better.
Mobile shopping, mobile search is on the rise and will continue to rise in the future, much beyond the holidays. So as marketers, people should look in to getting these searches and and services to market their products and adwords could be a bigger player in the process. Google is providing the means;
Shoppers often want to see more detailed information about a product before making a purchase decision. Now, when they search for a specific product on their smartphone or tablet, we show an expandable product card with rich product content such as reviews and details for that item. For example, on a query such as the Nexus 10, results will show the image of the product along with merchants who carry this tablet, detailed information on the product, and product reviews from customers
Another aid Google is giving to shoppers are the local availability of products they search for. Sometimes low price hunt is superseded by the ability to walk into a store and touch and feel the product before purchasing. So make sure, that you are visible to your local shoppers. You can take the advantage of  Auction insights segmented by device. Checkout how your stand up against your competitors, both big and small. Then you can identify missed opportunities and refine your bid modifier strategy to gain a greater share of voice on mobile. Check for more information on new insights now available in Shopping campaigns.

Getting a head start on Black Friday With Google.

If you are like me, you would already have done research on your Black Friday purchases, like revives and deals. Some are preparing to use Google Express for same day delivery, where available. Google is giving us hints on what people are looking for on Google search. Here are some questions;what time do stores open on black fridaywhat time does black friday startwhen does black friday endwhat to buy on black fridayAnd what are people looking for and according to Google Shopping Blog those trends are; San Francisco: No gingerbread cookies here. San Franciscans are seeking a nutritious holiday with lots of bananas, avocado, coconut water and quinoa. And talk about eating clean: Disinfecting wipes are also among top shoppers’ searches. West LA: The City of Angels is ready to party. Disposable silverware, plastic cups, paper plates, tortilla chips and garbage bags are all they need for hassle-free entertaining. Manhattan: New Yorkers start off the day right with cereal, almond milk and—why not?—butter croissants. After a long day, residents relax with snacks such as mini pretzels and almonds. Boston: Bring your appetite to Boston parties. Salty treats such as maple bacon chips, green pea crisps and peanuts top shopping lists. The city also buys more ketchup and popcorn than any other city. Chicago: Baby boom. Chicago households are stocking up for tots this winter with lots of baby wipes and goodies such as chocolate and sparkling juice. To ward off sniffles, Chicago is loading up on vitamin C and orange juice!Washington, D.C.: The capital is stocking up on healthy bites such as whole wheat crackers, fruit snacks and diet soda to wash it down. You can learn more about digital trends and their affects on Black Friday shopping and after, at ThinkwithGoogle. Advertising, Online Money Maker. Paypal Scammers At Work, Paypal Spoof. Retailers Watch Out.

FTC is informing about people getting stung by scammers spoofing PayPal. The scam basically target sellers, usually high value items. Once the product appears online, the scammer contacts seller offering to by the product, with one condition, he will pay only with Paypal. If you say I do not have Paypal, he/she offers to setup one. And sends the seller an email with a link. Don't fall victim to these people. Contact Paypal ( directly, if you need to get an account. Here are the scenarios played out at FTC.Scenario One: The buyer claims he can only pay via PayPal. Don’t have a PayPal account? No problem, he says. He’ll send you an email with a link so you can set one up.What should you do? Don’t take the bait. The link will send you to a website masquerading as PayPal. Any information you enter will be collected by the bogus buyer, and may be used to commit fraud. If you need to set up an account, go directly to Two: “Check your email!” The buyer claims he has sent payment to your PayPal account with additional funds so you can ship the merchandise ASAP, but oops, he sent too much money. He asks you to return the extra money via a money wiring service. It’s all a lie, including the extra money the buyer says he included. What should you do? Log into your PayPal account. Make sure you’ve been paid before you ship. Never follow links in emails from people you don’t know. The safest approach is to open a browser window, navigate to, and log in yourself. Also, if the buyer claims to have sent extra money, and asks for some back, that’s a big red flag.Scenario Three: The buyer sends you real money through a real PayPal account, and you ship him the car. Problem is, the PayPal account belongs to someone else! You might need to return the money even though the scammer has your wheels. What now? Contact PayPal and ask them to open an investigation. The company offers seller protections so you aren’t liable for unauthorized transactions. Also file a complaint with the FTC and your local police department.Advertising, Online Money Maker. [...]

Smart Watches, Will The Next Wave Of Advertising Bring A Data Rash?

da•ta rash \ˈdātə ˈrash\, n. an irritating or unsightly eruption of information on the wrist or other site of wearable technology.
As you know advertisements will appear everywhere possible and smart watches will not be safe from them. Now that smart watches are reaching every wrist, some of them literally giving rashes (The plastic Fitbit Force bracelet was recalled after causing allergic rashes and blistering.), and we will find the advertisements, close to your heart.
My colleague, Raven got a Withings watch and I asked him why such a less smart watch, no text, no calls? He just smiled. But I think I know the answer, now.

Microsoft Markets iPads In A Surface Pro Promotion!

Surface pro 3 stands while iPad does the real work.
If you were watching Election 2014 last night on CNN, you might have seen the Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 on the tables. Shiny silver kickstands supporting them. But I guess CNN did not have apps for them or told News casters, don't touch them. Because every Surface Pro 3, there was an iPad on top doing the chores.
Not a good marketing plan, glad I was watching another broadcast, otherwise it would have ruined my Election deductions.

Gerber (Nestlé Nutrition) Charged With False Advertising Related To It's Good Start Gentle formula.

FTC has filed false advertising charges against Gerber Products Co., also doing business as Nestlé Nutrition, in it's advertising campaigns about Good Start Gentle formula.
FTC alleges that since 2011, Gerber has advertised its Good Start Gentle formula through advertisements that ran on television, in magazines, at point-of-sale displays, online, and in other promotional material. Good Start Gentle sells for about $24 for a 23.2-ounce package of powdered formula.
“Parents trusted Gerber to tell the truth about the health benefits of its formula, and the company’s ads failed to live up to that trust,” said Jessica Rich, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “Gerber didn’t have evidence to back up its claim that Good Start Gentle formula reduces the risk of babies developing their parents’ allergies.”

Google Anti Piracy Movement Within Search, Advertising Space And Beyond.

AKA "How Google Fights Piracy"Google released today an update to the "How Google Fights Piracy" and we get to see how it fights pirates, educate and redirect general population, manage proper and illegitimate DCMA take down notices. Also high lighted are how the blogger platform is constantly watched for pirate activities. The search engine also direct users towards legitimate sources via ads. The originals search term for the example on the above document used "Star Trek Into Darkness" but even just searching for "watch Star Trek" produced similar but interesting results. So according to Google, search queries containing "watch", "free" and "download" (Which constitute to very small number compared to the general search queries), are presented with similar results.Google also taking into account DCMA take down notices (again legitimate requests) received by sites in connection with page ranking. Google has now modified the signal in ways that will punish the ranking of some of known sites. The new update will be rolled out worldwide starting next week.Following is extracted from the updated "How Google Fights Piracy" document;GOOGLE’S ANTI-PIRACY PRINCIPLESCreate More and Better Legitimate Alternatives. The best way to battle piracy is with better, more convenient, legitimate alternatives to piracy. By developing licensed products with beautiful user experiences, we help drive revenue for creative industries.Follow the Money. Rogue sites that specialize in online piracy are commercial ventures, which means the most effective way to combat them is to cut off their money supply. Google is a leader in rooting out and ejecting rogue sites from our advertising and payment services, and are raising standards across the industry.Be Efficient, Effective, and Scalable. Google strives to implement anti-piracy solutions that work. For example, beginning in 2010, Google has made substantial investments in streamlining the copyright removal process for search results. As a result these improved procedures allow us to process copyright removal requests for search results at the rate of four million requests per week with an average turnaround time of less than six hours. Guard Against Abuse. Unfortunately, fabricated copyright infringement allegations can be used as a pretext for censorship and to hinder competition. Google is committed to ensuring that, even as we battle piracy online, we detect and reject bogus infringement allegations, such as removals for political or competitive reasons.Provide Transparency. We disclose the number of requests we receive from copyright owners and governments to remove information from our services. We hope these steps toward greater transparency will inform ongoing discussions about content regulation online.Advertising, Online Money Maker. [...]

Did Facebook Failed To Impress Investors With New Ad Revenue?

Facebook sort of WOWed wall street with increased ad revenue, mobile ad revenue. Facebook reported mobile ad revenue increase from about 14% in Q3 2012 to 23% in Q4 2012. Even though ad revenue for Facebook is promising, the cost of the operations seems to have blown the air out of the balloon.

frameborder="0" height="330" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="" width="350"> Cost mainly comes from hires and changes to infrastructure. Company needed more people in the new Facebook gifts, Facebook graph search, custom audience and others. Of those, you have heard and read enough about the Graph search but I like the 'custom  audience'. I am sure Facebook will increase ad revenue with this product. Custom Audience improves ad targeting by  bringing together Facebook’s user data and customer data from advertiser. There could not be any better resources for advertising, and it might help in the Google vs Facebook Advertising fight.(image)

Does The Ad Size Matter? Looks Like Wider The Better

I was browsing through Adsense Help pages and noticed a page devoted to ad sizes. There I learned some thing that I did not think of before, Ad orientation. According the AdSense, wider ad sizes tend to outperform their taller counterparts, simply because of their eye-friendly or reader-friendly format. When we read or glance at some thing, we absorb information in "thought units," several words at a time in the case which contains text. So wide ads let us comfortably read more text at a glance without having to bounce between lines like in a vertical ad or a narrower ad.With their knowledge in ad space, AdSense team has this suggestion; If positioned well, wide ad sizes can increase your earnings significantly. The sizes we've found to be the most effective are the 336x280 Large Rectangle, the 300x250 Medium Rectangle, and the 160x600 Wide Skyscraper. Keep in mind that while these ad sizes typically perform well, you should use the size that best complements your pages.Following video explain the fact; allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="259" src="" width="450">So why don't you try with your website. PageMaps In Your Custom Search, Now Add Them Directly!

One of the reasons people like the pagemaps in their custom Search was the ability to create Richer Snippets. A new move by Google makes it much easier for users as they do not have to modify pages to expose Pagemaps, or wait for Google to crawl the site once you created them. As of today Google is allowing direct submission of Pagemaps via either Sitemaps or On-Demand Indexing requests.

From Google Custom Search Blog;

This saves time when you want to make a quick change to your metadata. If you have data you would like to be displayed on your site, such as reviews snippets, you can submit it directly to Google instead of putting it in publicly visible markup on your pages. For added security, you can even choose to add a private key to your Pagemap and we will only serve it in Custom Search results when that key is provided.

We hope you enjoy the added convenience these new submission options offer. Let us know what you think in our discussion forum.

ZAGAT @ Google Might Taste Good Enough To Write A Haiku!

I heard the news on this mornings TV but when I saw a tweet by Google's Marissa Mayer that prompted me to write this.
We all have seen ZAGAT ratings at restaurants and foodies might have even hand out some cash to get the book.
Me and my partner are pretty adventurous when it come to food and we visit places from hole in the walls to five star gourmet restaurants. We are also avid travelers. Knowing the our city, county, state, country and the world is a thirst that never cease.
When it come to hole in the wall and everything in between those five star restaurants, we usually look at Yelp to get an idea and prepare our selves. We use comments to educate ourselves rather than to chose a place.
But now, will we see a change? I guess so, ZAGAT@Google might help us to learn about restaurants in our localities and beyond. We may look there to find where to eat, drink, stay, shop and play.

Google Tells You How To Go About Getting A Job, Write The Best Resume!.

It is hard to bring bread to the table for many people these days and writing proper resume's are the last things in people's mind even though it should reside in frontal lobes some where. One Google's recruiting expert, Jeff Moore tells us how to go about it. Even though the post mentioned below targets college graduates (The post is on Google Students Blog!) aspiring to become Googlers, we all can take some advise to take away from these Recruiter Tips and Tricks;Show off your strengths – Makes sense, right? You want your resume to show off what makes you special and give recruiters a reason to interview you. The big things on your resume should make employers say, “wow!” It doesn’t really matter if it’s your education, internships or special awards, just make sure to show off your skills/experience and try to impress because (cliché alert!) you never get a second chance to make a first impression. The devil is in the details – A detailed resume is a good resume. The more info you share, the more a recruiter or hiring manager can look at your accomplishments and determine if you are a good fit for their team. For example, which one of these candidates would you want to talk to?Candidate A – Wrote several applications to improve efficiency within the finance group.Candidate B – Used Java and PHP to write financial accounting application that saved the company over 25 hours a week of productivity resulting in over $100K in savings.Remember, your resume is your message to the hiring team—tell them as much as you can so they can make the most informed decision.Keep it short – Huh? Didn’t he just say, “tell them as much as you can”? I did, but that doesn’t mean you should write a 15 page resume. What you want is a clear, concise resume that accurately describes your accomplishments. Assuming you are a new college grad, you probably want to stick to one page. However, if you have significant accomplishments (publications, open source contributions, startups, awards, etc.) it is acceptable to go on to a second page. Lots of career services folks will tell you “one page only.” I don’t subscribe to that, as long as the content of your resume is relevant.Spelling and grammar – I don’t even need to mention get it right? We have spell check for a reason. You'd be shocked at how many resumes I see with spelling errors. Grammar and spelling mistake look sloppy. Don't be careless, and don't depend on spell check. Proof read your resume and have others proof it as well.Know your target – Make sure your resume is targeted to the right audience. I’d recommend you add an “Objective” at the top of your resume (below your name!) that clearly states what your want to accomplish. Think of the objective as your “elevator pitch”, a concise statement to convince the hiring manager or recruiter that you are worth an initial conversation. Your objective and the meat of your resume should portray someone who is a fit for the job and company. For example, if you want a job at a specific company write an objective like this:Objective – To obtain a fast-paced and exciting role within the Google Staffing team.As opposed to this….Objective – To get a job at Google.Recruiter Tips & Tricks: preparing your resumeAdvertising, Online Money Maker.
