During the session we planned the podcast, developed an outline script, record it and start to edit it as a form of online audio podcast diary. September 2008 - Lifejackets save lives!

Statistics from actual incidents show that the probability of long-term survival is more than doubled when a lifejacket is worn. Whilst people are beginning to get the message that a good lifejacket can make the difference between life and death, they often do not fully appreciated the many ways a lifejacket can make this difference.

July 2008 - The new S92 Helicopter, AW139s and the Lifejacket Awareness Campaign

This edition of the MCA News Podcast features footage of the new Search and Rescue helicopters now deployed at the Coastguard bases. The first item is of the new Sikorsky S92 based at Stornoway. The current contract provides for commercial search and rescue helicopter services from four civilian-operated bases - Sumburgh, Stornoway, Lee-on-Solent and Portland - for a five-year period from July 1, 2007. The service provides 24-hour coverage at Sumburgh, Stornoway and Lee-on-Solent, and operates on a 12 hour day-time basis at Portland. The Sikorsky (S92) is based at Stornoway in the Western Isles of Scotland and at Sumburgh on the Shetland Islands. In addition, Agusta Westland139s (AW139) are based at Lee-on-Solent and at Portland. The second item in the MCA News Podcast comes from the South Coast, with Hugh Kirby of ITV Meridian flying with the new, smaller AW139 helicopters based at Portland and the Solent. A man is rescued from cliffs in Dorset and flown to hospital in Poole. Finally in this edition a piece produced by the MCA to encourage the wearing of lifejackets. Mariners who wear lifejackets have an excellent 70% chance of survival, in the event of ending up in the water.

This month's edition focusses on the real essentials when you're afloat, whether you're using Personal Watercraft - a Jetski, a larger leisure boat, or just on the marina using an inflatable tender. Lifejackets are much less bulky that they used to be and there's no reason not to wear one and stay safe whatever you're doing. And we're in Blackpool launching the SeaSmart Campaign to make children safer at the beach.

Sprinkler Demonstration
