I think having the RSS feed big and mighty at the top is the in thing for bloggers right now. It makes sense, since it is getting noticed more easily. The idea to link to the actual feed itself is also great.

Good move by all placing the RSS up top I am sure that you will notice a difference quite soon. Just with-in the last two days by making the very large button and just posting a few articles I have doubled my feeds. Never be shy about what you want to accomplish on your blog.

Yes, and I've noticed that placing my email subscription link inside my blog posts, and neatly incorporating them within the context of what I'm writing about helps. And a little begging never hurt... Plus, us techie's have got to realize that not everyone knows what the heck that little (or gigantic) orange (or pink, etc.) button is for. It helps to explain to people that it is a free subscription and how many emails to expect from us. That has helped my unsubscriber rate drop...
