Chile: First Marijuana Planted For Medical Use In Chile

The Virgin Islands Daily News, 30 Oct 2014 - SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - A Chilean municipality planted the country's first medical marijuana on Wednesday as part of a pilot program aimed to help ease the pain of cancer patients. The 850 seeds were imported from the Netherlands, and oil extracted from about half of the plants will be given to 200 patients selected by a municipality in the capital of Santiago and by the Daya Foundation, a nonprofit group that sponsors pain-relieving therapies.

That's what the Chilean government's new anti-drug commercials say. With the aim of preventing adolescents from doing drugs, the National Council for Narcotics Control (CONACE) launched the new campaign Monday. The campaign, "Return to Being Smart," began because the government grew worried over findings that suggest kids do not think there are risks involved in smoking marijuana.

Augusto Pinochet's former intelligence chief, now one of his bitterest enemies, has implicated the disgraced dictator and one of his sons in a cocaine manufacturing and smuggling scheme and contends that it was one of the sources of General Pinochet's illicit $28 million fortune. Gen. Manuel Contreras, who ran the Directorate of National Intelligence, the Chilean secret police, during the 1970's, made the charges in a document submitted last week to an investigating magistrate here. He also accused General Pinochet of embezzling money from secret government accounts that the dictator controlled during his 17 years in power, which ended in 1990.

In testimony sent to Chilean Judge Claudio Pavez, Manuel Contreras alleges that Pinochet and his son Marco Antonio organised a massive production and distribution network, selling cocaine to Europe and the US in the mid-1980s.
