Therapy and Education: Not Either/Or

Fri, 02 Mar 2018 20:01:09 -0500

Being a mental health professional who was once a teacher and has continued to work with them for many years, I have found that not only are good therapy and good education not mutually exclusive, but that they go hand in hand to successfully address the needs of children with special emotional needs.A good case can be made for the notion that good education is a therapeutic experience - for anyone: And, that conversely, good therapy is an educational experience. So the two activities are not only complimentary, but actually interdependent and have more in common that might first meet the eye of a casual observer. After all, they are both about learning.Let’s consider the fundamental purposes of each to see what I mean.Therapy (I am speaking here specifically of Psychotherapy) is an interactive activity designed to promote better and more satisfying life adjustments for the people who engage in it. A key element to the therapeutic enterprise involves helping the patient/client learn to think about things somewhat differently from that which has become their custom. That is to say, in a successful therapy, the client has learned to think, perceive and perhaps even to act in different ways that work better for them. They have had, in fact, a successful educational experience. This experience enhances both their ability to relate, to be successful in achieving their goals and to lead generally more satisfying lives.Education, whether addressed to adults or to children, is a process in which students strive to acquire new knowledge - Knowledge that will broaden their range of choices and enhance their sense of themselves and their own competencies. These are very therapeutic objectives, indeed. This understanding goes to reinforce the necessity of treatment and educational staff working together, particularly with regards to special needs children, to coordinate their efforts to achieve maximum impact - both educationally and therapeutically with the child.Sometimes, the two activities are literally blended and referred to as ‘psycho-educational’ activities. Used with children, parents and childless adults, the goal is to combine the process work of treatment with the learning activities of education to create a more holistic and effective experience for those seeking change. The shared objectives of helping people achieve greater competencies, life and coping skills are shared by both professions. Good teachers, like good therapists, are not working to enhance themselves or their own 'egos,’ but to assist the student/client/parent in experiencing a more satisfying life - for themselves or as a member of a family. Therapists sometimes teach and teachers sometimes have the greatest direct therapeutic impact on a child by structuring program and learning experiences that are likely to engender success. There is nothing quite as conducive to the building of healthy self-esteem that earned success.Of course, neither the finest education nor best possible therapy is apt to do much good for anyone who does not 1) want to change/learn and 2) is not prepared to engage in the rather challenging work involved in achieving that desired learning or change. As the words of an old tune from the 1960’s said so well “… Thinkin’ and hopin’ and wishin’ and prayin’ - Plannin’ and schemin’ …” won’t change anything. They may be necessary precursors of change, but they must be followed by motivated hard work - the type of which both teachers and therapists are trained to assist with.A motivated student with a good teacher will learn. A motivated client/patient with a good therapist will succeed in achieving better adjustment in his or her life.Education + a motivated student = Success.Therapy + a motivated client = Success.Education + Therapy + a motivated person = The most profound opportunities for change and success.[...]

Test Banks, Professor Evaluations, and Tag Team Attendance: How College Students Have Learned to Not Learn

Tue, 27 Feb 2018 07:00:31 -0500

Perhaps getting a bachelor’s degree meant something 25 years ago but today’s college students see an undergraduate degree as the stepping stone to applying for graduate school, where the real learning begins. This is belief is one of the reasons why students are developing every concept imaginable to make the grades they want without having to learn as much of the class material.

While the concept of cheating or using study techniques in order to get better grades in the classroom isn’t new, the concept of a systemized arsenal of techniques used to get the grades without putting in the work is not something Universities were not expecting.

The Bankable Test Bank
Stocked within quite a number of professional societies, Greek sororities and fraternities, and various collegiate clubs one will find the test bank. The student test bank takes advantage of professors who use the same or similar tests year after year. It is filled with the old tests, test reviews, and copies of annotated student notes that professors hand out to students. A good test bank can go back for years, showing a trend of what questions will likely be on tests, and thus helping students to avoid memorizing anything, no matter how important, that will not be on an exam.

Professor Evaluations
Students are no longer willing to take the risk of walking into lecture on their first day of class without having some background information on their professors. A few websites have popped up that have united students together in the noble goal of avoiding all professors who are difficult graders. Websites like post the grades that professors give to students. These webpages also display student comments about how easy or difficult professors are on grading, presentation, and whether or not the class is fun or boring. Some student organizations take it upon themselves to have members to fill out evaluations of professors and store them so those members have the inside track on which professors are the easy graders.

Tag Teams
Lost of students have used their affiliation with one another through activities of club participation’s to band together and cut their course work in half. Like the teams professors assign for class projects, students make informal semester-long “tag teams” devoted to passing a class as easy as possible.“ Students take advantage of classes with low participation and attendance requirements and alternate the attending class with each other. So they don’t miss any important information while missing class they give notes to those who miss class. Students also pool money together to pay the class student note taker and make copies of those notes for their tag teams.

Thus, these tag teams virtually eliminates the need to keep up with class attendance, to actually pay attention when deciding to go to class, and consistently take accurate notes.

So watch out America the new generation of college graduates can’t really explain the subjects they major in, but they can tell you how to pass the class.

31.03.17 // Mini study desk!

Guys, check it out! My latest study investment: a wee adjustable laptop desk. Now I can work down on the floor without my back complaining. Every. Time.

Might also begin to use it as an art desk?

It’s been another full-on week, mainly because I was asked to provide extra cover at work. This is very helpful financially, but less so for my research progress. So, I’m trading off: I’m skipping out on this morning’s research seminar and calling it a writing day.

Task Priorities

  1. Finish article due today (not academic, though it’s about my research): Complete. Edit. Send. Update: Done
  2. Thesis writing: complete a very rough draft of the current section.
  3. Plan research: figure out the basic argument (and structure?) for next article on music as theology.

It’s a dreary day, and I don’t feel super awake yet. Still, it’s cosy inside, and I’m just grateful I don’t have to go anywhere further than my kitchen today.

thestudyfeels: hello peeps!! as everyone knows (or not) my originals are mostly masterposts and a few of you have asked me ‘how to make a masterpost’ so this masterpost is all about that, hope this helps! :^) basics : what is a masterpost? consider a masterpost as an article. it consists of your advice and tips about a particular topic in an organized manner. how do I make a masterpost? the rest of this masterpost is all about that, keep reading! why should I make a masterpost? well, because you want to. they are quite fun to make and most importantly, masterposts are a great way to get your blog out there because people love™ reading about your techniques to stay productive and stuff like that. making a masterpost : step one : pick a topic there are two general ways of doing this - look into yourself (does this make sense) and find out your flaws. Maybe you’re bad at time management or you tend to procrastinate a lot. pick any one of those flaws and write a masterpost on it! ask people. personally I do this once every two months. you can just go on Tumblr and be like, “hey guys, I’m thinking about writing articles soon so what are some topics you would like to see?” and I’m pretty sure your followers will give you ideas! step two : writing about the topic some general tips about writing an article - start with an introduction like you would when writing a essay. this can be just a simple greeting or just explaining the topic in a few words. (in this article, the introduction is the basics portion)now move on to the content portion! about the content, here are some stuff to take notice of -always write stuff you believe in. do not put down points you haven’t tried out and have just heard about from somewhere. don't copy from other articles please! the masterpost shouldn’t be hella long or hella short. it should be just hella perfect. we really really really like numbered shit. this is a pro tip, write your article in points; it’s easier to read and we just like it that way. you’re almost there! let’s do the conclusion now! end on a positive note always. it makes your article a more pleasurable experience! an example - “hope this helped you! I hope you are doing well, stay brilliant love!” it’s really helpful to link your other masterposts down your article. mainly because people might want to check your blog out and having your articles is a huge help! you can also link your about to the ending line so that people can get to know about you.  an example -  love, xyz (and link your about to the word ‘xyz’) some pro hacks *wink wink* - you might not want to bold the headers of your articles like some people do, eg: on a article about productivity, let’s suppose one point is about waking up early and then you go on to explain that tip. Now dO NOT bold ‘waking up early’!! why you ask? this is because lazy folks like me will just read the headers! we’ll skip thru your article and now we don’t want that, do we? making a graphic for your masterpost is also really cool (shh i just use MS Paint lmao) write in points as I earlier said because we love numbered shit. be consistent with your masterposts!! personally, I love when someone comes out with helpful masterposts on a regular basis and I definitely follow them. And they’ll def follow you if you are a regular at this! always, always, always edit and recheck your masterposts. it is sure as hell full of grammatical errors and misspellings. dO CHECK YOUR ARTICLE!! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!1! (this is honestly the most important tip. I have hella experience with it for once I wrote, 'sit’ instead of 'site’ rip ;;) dO NOT write your article directly on the Tumblr site. Tumblr sucks, everyone knows that, and it will mess up your masterpost, I give you a 200% guarantee. Instead type out your masterpost first in a doc or word file, heck just use the notepad option on your phone, but never try the Tumblr[...]

Did the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers' Bo Pelini Lie by Omission About Marvin Sanders?

Mon, 26 Feb 2018 07:22:04 -0500

Did the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers’ head coach lie by omission to football recruits about one of his position coaches? That’s the question being raised about Bo Pelini immediately following Signing Day.Secondary coach Marvin Sanders is one of the top position coaches in the nation. During the past two seasons, the Nebraska secondary has managed top-3 rankings on the pass efficiency leaderboard. Here’s a short timeline of events leading up to the resignation of Sanders:February 2nd - WednesdayRecruits finalize their commitments to the University of Nebraska by faxing in their letters of intent. The football program hosts the Big Red Recruiting Dinner to celebrate the end of the day. Conspicuously absent from the event is Sanders, along with fellow coaches Shawn Watson and Ted Gilmore. The head coach of Indiana, Kevin Wilson, announces during his recruiting press conference that Indiana’s cornerbacks coach will be leaving to take a new position at the University of Nebraska. Wilson says that Corey Wilson is specifically going to take the Cornhuskers’ secondary position.Pelini’s press conference occurs after Indiana’s. Pelini claims not to have hired any coaches and refuses to answer any questions about Sanders, Wilson, or the coaching situation at Nebraska.February 3rd - ThursdayThe University of Nebraska makes a brief press release stating that Marvin Sanders has submitted his resignation. Sanders’ resignation is allegedly for reasons that are personal and related to family matters.February 4th - FridayRecruit Charles Jackson tells the Omaha World-Herald that he was not informed of Sanders’ impending departure and hasn’t even been contacted about the matter. Jackson plays cornerback and would have had Sanders as his position coach. Jackson speculates that Sanders’ resignation was not announced earlier because it may have affected recruiting. He also says that no one from the football program or university had contacted him to tell him about Sanders as of 8 p.m. on Thursday.OpinionA lie by omission is generally considered to be when a person has told the truth, but deliberately neglects to tell all of the relevant information. Did Bo Pelini know about Sanders’ resignation and withhold the information until after Signing Day?The University of Nebraska, Pelini, and Sanders have refused to comment beyond what was said in the Nebraska recruiting day conference and the university press release about Sanders’ resignation. Until one of them chooses to talk, we won’t know for sure whether Pelini crossed the line.No matter how you look at this, Bo Pelini doesn’t come out of the matter smelling like roses. A position coach is going to be the person that a football player spends most of his time with. A change in position coaches can be an important factor for football recruits to consider. While the coaching change doesn’t appear to break any rules, I feel the timing of it and Pelini’s apparent lack of notification to Charles Jackson is morally questionable. There isn’t a good reason to make a change immediately after Signing Day unless a coach has committed some kind of crime.Even if Sanders’ resignation was abrupt and completely unplanned, Pelini needs to take the time to notify his recruits. It’s one thing to tell the media “no comment”. Pelini has had a bit of a contentious relationship with the media for a long time. However, treating his players like this is a poor decision on Pelini’s part. Jackson appears to be willing to stay a Cornhusker for the time being, but he has every right to feel disrespected.SourcesESPN.comOmaha World-Herald[...]
