Comment on Satellite Radio Not Ready for Prime Time by loftusblog

Wed, 11 Jan 2006 14:03:13 +0000

As a two-year veteran of satellite radio, I am neither disgruntled nor made poor by my SIRIUS system. Not ready for prime time? I just saw an article yesterday that said there would be 20 million subscribers by 2010! As for the subscription-baed model, I have more of one thing than any terestrial radio head: Time. As I drive around the city I get more music per driving session than someone listening to their FM dial. And, if the current administration has its way, there will be nothing left but Christian talk on FCC-controlled zombie radio anyway.

My IPOD was 300.00 and the car kit was 100.00. My Sirius and kit were under 100.00 Leaving money left over for a home dock which included a cd player, aux input and an am/fm tuner. Plus Sirius produces the content for me, I have to provide content to my IPOD. I know this article isnt comparing the two but the pitfalls stated are the same challenges both face ( except IPOD doenst offer fm without buying a 50.00 sloppy adapter kit) The sound quality is also excellent in home and in my car. I work in downtown Chicago and by the highrises where my FM signal gets bent, my SIRIUS is unphased... go figure.

Comment on Widgets in 2006 by Westervelt Blog » Update: Widgets in 2006

Tue, 10 Jan 2006 17:52:07 +0000

[...] Now, I’ve said that widgets can clutter a desktop rather quickly, but clearly they have a purpose in that they can sit in the background and allow a casual user to glance at sports scores or quickly conduct a Google search without opening a Web browser. It will be interesting to see how much of Windows Vista builds in widget support. [...]

Comment on Breaking The Text Messaging Record by Charna

Thu, 05 Jan 2006 15:10:23 +0000

I am proud to say that I do not text message. I just can't be bothered. Maybe I'm too old school, but how much more impersonal can we get!? As a side note, I think it's absolutely obnoxious to be in the presence of someone whose crackberry beeps and blips, only to have that person turn his or her attention away from you, so s/he can check messages. Having the ability to be connected to the world 24-7 can be great, sure, but we've become so much more passive-aggressive as a result.

In 1853-4 (look it up) the railroad industry was plagued with so many fatal wrecks that it looked like people would start going back to horse drawn transport... They fixed it! Yes, the Internet needs fixing and more people have to say it.

You're right - if society was run the same way that the internet is then we'd all be in the shit. But what's to happen to the privacy issue that organisations like the EFF are so keen to protect? Personally, I don't mind being watched on CCTV because I've got nothing to hide and it helps protect society from the people that have got things to hide. But will these new protocols make it even easier for companies to track me on the web? Mind you, if it stops the bloody spam...
