Eleven-Eleven Campaign Makes It Easy To Give $11 to Vets

A new website just launched for Veterans day: Bottom line: What cha can do is text the word "vets" to "85944" - and then send the word "yes" back when you receive a confirmation text. This will add $11 to your next phone bill. You can do it up to five times. Note: This process took me less than 20 seconds to complete. There are a bunch of veterans organizations behind this effort. I'm including the original email that was sent to me below. This Veterans Day marks the beginning of The Eleven Eleven Campaign -- a nationwide campaign...

My Singularity Summit Coverage For H+ Magazine

The Singularity Summit that happened a few weekends ago in New York City was quite the blast, and I had a great time covering it for h+ Magazine. My brain is still recovering from the influx of strange and bizarre information -- combined with a cast of characters, some with goals straight out of a science fiction movie. Anders Sandberg and Randal Keone discussed Whole Brain Emulation. Itamar Arel covered Artificial General Intelligence. Ben Goertzel covered AGI and Bioinformatics and Virtual Worlds. Gary Marcus talked about How the Brain Thinks (whether we want it to that way or not...

Boots Riley At The October 17, 2009 Anti-War Rally In San Francisco, California

Boots Riley Oct 17 - MOVIE Boots Riley Oct 17 - WAV Boots Riley Oct 17 - MP3 "A lot of what inspired me about what happened last year with the elections had nothing to do with Obama being elected. It had to do with the fact that it was obvious that people wanted a change. Unfortunately, people thought they were electing an anti-war president. And, as you see, we're all over it - we got more war going on, and it's not gonna stop unless the people stop it. Unless we scare them into thinking there's a consequence...

Howard Zinn On Obama's Peace Prize

What a strange world we live in... Nobel Prize For Promises By Howard Zinn for t r u t h o u t. "I was dismayed when I heard Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize. A shock, really, to think that a president carrying on wars in two countries and launching military action in a third country (Pakistan), would be given a peace prize. But then I recalled that Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Kissinger had all received Nobel Peace Prizes. The Nobel Committee is famous for its superficial estimates and for its susceptibility to rhetoric and empty...

My "Crashing Into the Moon Story" for h+ Magazine

I've been writing a lot lately for h+ magazine. My latest story is about the Moon and the hydrogen that NASA found there. ...the building blocks of water, hydrogen and oxygen, are already everywhere -- all over the Moon. We know that water is created naturally from meteors striking the surface and flash-heating the regolith, which causes iron oxide to be gradually reduced by the hydrogen implanted by the solar wind. The hydrogen in the regolith reacts with the oxygen in the iron oxide to create water. This water, generated on or deposited onto the Moon, is either lost to...

Is this thing on?

okie doke. How should I say this politely? "I'm baaaack! " Well that might not have been as appropriate as I had envisioned. But let's just say I am back, and I have a hell of a lot to talk about......

Warrantless Wiretapping of American Citizens A-OK According to Obama's DOJ

In the past, I have placed all of my "warrantless wiretapping of americans" posts under Bush's Watergate on Steroids. What a joke! Ha ha! But the joke's on me - and all of us, as it turns out. It saddens me greatly to have to create an "Obama's Warrantless Wiretapping" category. Today is a day I never thought I'd see. Seriously. I thought something as simple as striking down warrantless wiretapping would be a no-brainer. Certainly not a policy the Obama Administration would actually endorse and defend. This is an excerpt from EFF's Effector 22.10: THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION HAS EMBRACED...

Contact Conference This Fri-Sun at NASA Ames

Last year's Contact conference was one of my favorite conferences of all time. The focus of Contact is really hard to explain, but I'll try: Space Exploration, Artificial Intelligence, Music, Science Fiction, Film making, Singularity stuff, Robot stuff, Artificial Life, Virtual Worlds, Virtual Reality, Space Colonization, Astrobiology, Astropsychology, Astrosociology, Biotech, Bioinformatics... -- and *really* on all of it! (and I'm sure I'm forgetting something) -- ALL this stuff is covered -- and well! Just go if you can. Registration is a bargain, and there's a student rate! Check out the speaker list....
