Recent Volcano Updates from the U.S. Geological Survey Volcano Hazards Program

Published: Mon, 25 Sep 2017 18:49:05 +0000

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - No activity in satellite, seismic or infrasound data.
Sep 24, 2017 21:21 - Low-level unrest continues at Cleveland Volcano. Nothing of any volcanological significance was observed in satellite data over the past day. Steaming at the summit crater was evident in a few web camera views today. No significant activity has been detected in seismic or infrasound data. Cleveland volcano is monitored with a limited real-time seismic network, which inhibits AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, ...

AVO Bogoslof ORANGE/WATCH - No activity observed in seismic/infrasound data.
Sep 24, 2017 21:21 - Low-level unrest at Bogoslof volcano continues. Nothing noteworthy was observed in satellite views of Bogoslof Island over the past day. No significant activity was detected in seismic or infrasound data from neighboring islands over the past day. Bogoslof volcano remains at a heightened state of unrest and in an unpredictable condition. Activity can escalate quickly with explosions producing high-altitude (>15,000 ft) volcanic clouds with little to no detectable precursory activity. Some previous explosions have been preceded by an increase in earthquake activity ...

HVO Kilauea ORANGE/WATCH - Eruption continues at summit and East Rift Zone. Flows pose no threat to nearby communities.
Sep 24, 2017 19:33 - Activity Summary: Kīlauea Volcano continues to erupt at the summit and from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent on its East Rift Zone. The episode 61g lava flow continues to enter the ocean at Kamokuna. A short-lived breakout on the cliff above the ocean entry delta that disrupted the ramp and produced a brief episode of firehose lava activity yesterday has reportedly subsided. Surface flow activity persists on the upper portion of the flow field, on the pali, and in scattered areas of the coastal plain. These lava flows pose no threat to nearby communities at this time. Low ...

CVO Cascade Range GREEN/NORMAL - All volcanoes are at normal levels.
Sep 22, 2017 22:31 - Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal background levels of activity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon. Recent Observations: Monitoring systems have shown that seismic activity over this week at Cascade Range volcanoes remained within the normal range. The slight uptick in small earthquakes recorded last week at Mount Rainier has continued. The number, ...

HVO Mauna Loa YELLOW/ADVISORY - Mauna Loa is not erupting. Deformation and seismicity remain above long-term background.
Sep 21, 2017 19:40 - Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting. Rates of deformation and seismicity have not changed significantly in the past week and persist at above-long-term-background levels. Observations: Small-magnitude earthquakes continue to occur beneath the summit caldera and upper Southwest Rift Zone. These occurred primarily at shallow depths of less than 5 km (3 miles), with some additional deeper events at depths between 5-13 km (3-8 miles). Global Positioning System (GPS) and satellite radar (InSAR) measurements continue to show deformation consistent ...

HVO Lo`ihi UNASSIGNED/UNASSIGNED - No activity of concern.
Sep 7, 2017 21:53 - Earthquake activity remained slightly elevated at Lō‘ihi during August with HVO recording 12 earthquakes in the vicinity of the volcano. Most earthquakes occurred around 12 km (7.5 mi) depth.

HVO Hualalai GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Sep 7, 2017 21:53 - No significant changes were detected at Hualālai during the month of August. No earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of the volcano. A continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver atop Hualālai recorded no significant deformation.

HVO Haleakala GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Sep 7, 2017 21:53 - No significant changes were detected at Haleakalā during the month of August. One earthquake occurred in the vicinity of the volcano and HVO’s single, continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) instrument atop Haleakalā volcano recorded no significant deformation.

HVO Mauna Kea GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Sep 7, 2017 21:53 - No significant deformation or seismicity occurred during the month of August. HVO recorded 13 earthquakes deeper than 13 km (8 mi) and 8 shallow earthquakes beneath the volcano. A single, continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver atop Mauna Kea (operated by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory) recorded no significant deformation.

CALVO GREEN/NORMAL - Activity Update: Volcanoes monitored by CalVO show normal levels of background seismicity and ...
Sep 5, 2017 20:00 - Monitored CALIFORNIA VOLCANOES Current Volcano Alert Level: all NORMAL Current Aviation Color Code: all GREEN Activity Update: All volcanoes monitored by CalVO using telemetered, real-time sensor networks exhibit normal levels of background seismicity and deformation. Volcanoes monitored include Mount Shasta, Medicine Lake Volcano, Clear Lake Volcanic Field, Lassen Volcanic Center, Long Valley Volcanic Region, Coso Volcanic Field, Ubehebe Craters, and Salton Buttes. Observations for August 1, 2017 (0000h PST) through August 31, 2017 (2359h PDT): Mt Shasta: ...

YVO Yellowstone GREEN/NORMAL - YVO Monthly Update: earthquake swarm continues; deformation rates remain low/normal.
Sep 1, 2017 20:13 - Seismicity During August 2017, the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, responsible for the operation and analysis of the Yellowstone Seismic Network, reports 1029 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone National Park (YNP) region. The largest event was a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.3 on August 20, at 09:00 PM MDT, located about 10 miles north of West Yellowstone, MT, where the earthquake was reported felt. This earthquake is part of a continued energetic sequence in the same area that began on June 12. August seismicity in Yellowstone was marked by the ...

AVO Pavlof GREEN/NORMAL - Low-level unrest continues at normal, background levels.
Sep 1, 2017 20:13 - Low-level unrest continues at Pavlof, but no significant activity was observed in geophysical or satellite data during the past week. This low level of activity is now considered as being indicative of normal, non-eruptive behavior at Pavlof. For this reason, the Aviation Color Code was changed to Green and the Volcano Alert Level was changed to Normal on August 30. Vapor emissions, with or without minor amounts of volcanic ash, are common and may occur from the summit vent at any time. Periods of more vigorous ash emission and lava fountaining also are possible and ...
