Recent Volcano Updates from the U.S. Geological Survey Volcano Hazards Program

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Unrest continues; no activity detected in satellite, seismic, or infrasound data.
Nov 20, 2017 21:29 - Unrest at Cleveland volcano is continuing at a low level. Nothing significant was observed in clear to partly cloudy satellite images over the past day. No activity was detected by seismic or infrasound sensors during the past 24 hours. Lava effusion is typically confined to the summit crater at Cleveland, with the last significant lava flow (that extended to the ocean) occurring in 2001. The lava domes that have been erupted since 2001 have all been destroyed by explosive activity within weeks to months after lava effusion. These explosions typically produce ...

AVO Bogoslof YELLOW/ADVISORY - Low-level unrest continues; no significant activity in satellite or geophysical data.
Nov 20, 2017 21:29 - Low-level unrest at Bogoslof Volcano is likely continuing. Nothing significant was observed in clear to partly cloudy satellite images over the past day. Nothing noteworthy was detected in seismic or infrasound data from sensors located on neighboring islands. Volcanic explosions producing high-altitude (>15,000 ft asl) volcanic clouds remain possible with little or no warning. Some previous explosions have been preceded by an increase in earthquake activity that allowed for short-term forecasts of imminent significant explosive activity. Although we are able to detect ...

HVO Kilauea ORANGE/WATCH - Eruption continues at summit and East Rift Zone. Flows pose no threat to nearby communities.
Nov 20, 2017 18:56 - Activity Summary: No significant change. Kīlauea Volcano continues to erupt at the summit and the Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent on its East Rift Zone. The episode 61g lava flow activity persists on the upper portion of the flow field, on the pali, and in scattered areas on the coastal plain. These lava flows pose no threat to nearby communities at this time. The lava lake surface is approximately 34 m (111 ft.) below the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu. Low rates of ground deformation and seismicity continue across the volcano. Summit Observations: Tiltmeters at Kīlauea's summit are ...

AVO Katmai GREEN/NORMAL - Resuspended ash was detected in the Katmai area this week. No eruption is in progress.
Nov 18, 2017 01:14 - On November 10 and 13 strong winds in the vicinity of Katmai and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes picked up loose volcanic ash erupted during the 1912 Novarupta-Katmai eruption. The resulting resuspended ash cloud extended over Shelikof Strait and Kodiak Island. This phenomenon is not the result of recent volcanic activity and occurs seasonally in the spring and fall during times of high winds and dry snow-free conditions in the Katmai area and other young volcanic areas of Alaska. All of the volcanoes of the Katmai area (Snowy, Griggs, Katmai, Novarupta, Trident, ...

CVO Cascade Range GREEN/NORMAL - All volcanoes are at normal levels.
Nov 17, 2017 20:18 - Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal background levels of activity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon. Recent Observations: This week the Cascade volcanoes exhibited their usual background level of seismicity. A few tiny earthquakes were registered at Mount St. Helens, Rainier, and Newberry. Storm noise has been visible on many seismic records, which ...

HVO Mauna Loa YELLOW/ADVISORY - Mauna Loa is not erupting. Deformation and seismicity remain above long-term background.
Nov 16, 2017 19:35 - Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting. Rates of deformation and seismicity have not changed significantly in the past week, and persist above long-term background levels. Observations: During the past week, only a few small-magnitude earthquakes occurred beneath the volcano, primarily in the south caldera and upper Southwest Rift at depths less than 5 km (3 miles). An additional, small number of earthquakes also occurred on the west flank of the volcano at depths ranging from 5-13 km (3-8 miles). Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements continue ...

HVO Lo`ihi UNASSIGNED/UNASSIGNED - No activity of concern.
Nov 8, 2017 00:53 - Earthquake activity remained slightly elevated at Lō‘ihi during October with HVO recording 23 earthquakes in the vicinity of the volcano.

HVO Hualalai GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Nov 8, 2017 00:53 - No significant changes were detected at Hualālai during the month of October. HVO reports 5 earthquakes greater than 13 km (8 miles) depth and no earthquakes shallower than 13 km (8 miles) beneath the volcano during the past month. HVO's continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver atop Hualālai recorded no significant deformation.

HVO Haleakala GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Nov 8, 2017 00:53 - No significant changes were detected at Haleakalā during the month of October. No earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of the volcano and the continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) instrument atop Haleakalā volcano recorded no significant deformation.

HVO Mauna Kea GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Nov 8, 2017 00:53 - No significant deformation or seismicity occurred during the month of October. HVO recorded 18 earthquakes deeper than 13 km (8 mi) and 4 shallow earthquakes beneath the volcano. A single, continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver atop Mauna Kea (operated by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory) recorded no significant deformation.

YVO Yellowstone GREEN/NORMAL - YVO Monthly Update: normal rates of seismicity and deformation
Nov 1, 2017 22:09 - Recent work Field operations in the Yellowstone region during October included the recovery of semi-permanent GPS stations from 12 sites in and around the National Park. These sites, which augment the existing network of continuously operating GPS stations during spring, summer, and fall months, will be reinstalled in May 2018, continuing a pattern of deployment begun in 2008. In addition, a gravity survey was completed in mid-October. This was the last of four surveys conducted over the course of 2017 with the purpose of assessing seasonal variations in gravity due ...

CALVO GREEN/NORMAL - Activity Update: Volcanoes monitored by CalVO show normal levels of background seismicity and ...
Nov 1, 2017 16:59 - Monitored CALIFORNIA VOLCANOES Current Volcano Alert Level: all NORMAL Current Aviation Color Code: all GREEN Activity Update: All volcanoes monitored by CalVO using telemetered, real-time sensor networks exhibit normal levels of background seismicity and deformation. Volcanoes monitored include Mount Shasta, Medicine Lake Volcano, Clear Lake Volcanic Field, Lassen Volcanic Center, Long Valley Volcanic Region, Coso Volcanic Field, Ubehebe Craters, and Salton Buttes. Observations for October 1, 2017 (0000h PST) through October 31, 2017 (2359h PDT): Mt ...
