Recent Volcano Observatory Activity Reports

Recent Volcano Updates from the U.S. Geological Survey Volcano Hazards Program

Published: Mon, 22 Jan 2018 00:41:51 +0000

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Elevated surface temperatures seen in satellite data. Otherwise no activity.
Jan 21, 2018 19:18 - Unrest continues at Cleveland volcano. Moderately elevated surface temperatures were observed in mostly clear satellite views over the past day. Nothing significant detected in seismic or infrasound data during the last 24 hours.

AVO Shishaldin YELLOW/ADVISORY - Seismicity remains above background; nothing significant in satellite data.
Jan 21, 2018 19:18 - Low-level unrest continues at Shishaldin volcano. Over the last 24 hours, repetitive low frequency earthquakes from the summit area have continued above background levels. Nothing significant observed in mostly clear satellite data.

HVO Kilauea ORANGE/WATCH - Eruption continues at summit and East Rift Zone. No immediate threat to nearby communities.
Jan 21, 2018 17:04 - Activity Summary: No significant change. Kīlauea continues to erupt at its summit and from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent on its East Rift Zone. The episode 61g lava flow is producing scattered surface flow activity and lava is not entering the ocean. Lava flows pose no threat to nearby communities at this time. Friday morning, a rockfall into the lava lake at Kīlauea's summit produced an explosion of debris that blanketed an area around the southeast rim of Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Prior to the explosion, the lava lake was 39 m (128 ft) below the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu crater ...

AVO Great Sitkin GREEN/NORMAL - Color Code/Alert Level lowered yesterday based on 2 month decline in seismicity
Jan 19, 2018 23:47 - The Color Code/Alert Level for Great Sitkin was lowered to GREEN/NORMAL yesterday based on decreasing earthquake activity over the past 2 months. In addition, no significant activity had been observed in satellite data and no steam plumes had been reported over the same 2 month time period. The decline over the past 2 months in the number of earthquakes suggests an intrusion of magma beneath Great Sitkin, which caused elevated seismicity during late 2016 and most of 2017, has possibly stalled and the volcano is returning to a period of background seismicity. Future ...

CVO Cascade Range GREEN/NORMAL - All volcanoes are at normal levels.
Jan 19, 2018 20:32 - Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal background levels of activity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon. Recent Observations: Monitoring systems indicate that activity at Cascade Range volcanoes remained at background levels this past week. Small earthquakes were detected at Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens.

HVO Mauna Loa YELLOW/ADVISORY - Mauna Loa is not erupting. Deformation and seismicity rates decreased.
Jan 18, 2018 19:22 - Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting. Rates of deformation and seismicity remain above long-term background levels, but rates in the past few months have decreased compared to rates of the past year. Similar decreases have occurred in the past during the ongoing period of unrest; it is uncertain if these lower rates will persist or pick up again in the near future. Observations: Small-magnitude earthquakes continue to occur beneath the volcano, primarily beneath the summit caldera and upper Southwest Rift Zone at depths less than 5 km (3 miles). ...

CALVO GREEN/NORMAL - Activity Update: Volcanoes monitored by CalVO show normal levels of background seismicity and ...
Jan 4, 2018 19:36 - Monitored CALIFORNIA VOLCANOES Current Volcano Alert Level: all NORMAL Current Aviation Color Code: all GREEN Activity Update: All volcanoes monitored by CalVO using telemetered, real-time sensor networks exhibit normal levels of background seismicity and deformation. Volcanoes monitored include Mount Shasta, Medicine Lake Volcano, Clear Lake Volcanic Field, Lassen Volcanic Center, Long Valley Volcanic Region, Coso Volcanic Field, Ubehebe Craters, and Salton Buttes. Observations for December 1, 2017 (0000h PST) through December 31, 2017 (2359h PDT): Mt ...

HVO Lo`ihi UNASSIGNED/UNASSIGNED - No activity of concern.
Jan 4, 2018 02:26 - Earthquake activity remained low at Lō‘ihi during December with HVO recording 9 earthquakes deeper than 13 km (8 miles) and 4 earthquakes shallower than 13 km (8 miles.)

HVO Hualalai GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Jan 4, 2018 02:26 - No significant changes were detected at Hualālai during the month of December. HVO reports 4 earthquakes deeper than 13 km (8 miles) depth and 1 felt earthquake shallower than 13 km (8 miles) in the vicinity of the volcano during the past month. HVO's continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver atop Hualālai recorded no significant deformation.

HVO Haleakala GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Jan 4, 2018 02:26 - No significant changes were detected at Haleakalā during the month of December. No earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of the volcano and the continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) instrument atop Haleakalā volcano recorded no significant deformation.

HVO Mauna Kea GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern.
Jan 4, 2018 02:26 - No significant deformation or seismicity occurred during the month of December. HVO recorded 8 earthquakes deeper than 13 km (8 mi) and 2 shallow earthquakes beneath the volcano. A single, continuously recording Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver atop Mauna Kea (operated by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory) recorded no significant deformation.

YVO Yellowstone GREEN/NORMAL - YVO Monthly Update: normal rates of seismicity, switch to subsidence at Norris
Jan 2, 2018 19:28 - Recent work On January 1, the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) released the inaugural issue of “Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles”—a new weekly article that will discuss various aspects of Yellowstone’s geology, history, and recent activity. The first edition reviews the noteworthy events of 2017, giving special attention to the Maple Creek earthquake swarm—the second largest swarm ever recorded in the Park! This and subsequent Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles articles are posted to the YVO website . Tune in every Monday for a new story about the largest ...
