MyStuff :: Farewell ToppyWorld

After being a Topfield owner for well over 10 years, having had three 5800s, frequent measurement of p/s voltages, three complete p/s recaps, quite a few new disks and countless rebuilds, to say nothing of endless validating/trimming of channels and all the other stuff we topfield owners are encouraged to do to persuade our poor beasts to limp on another day - I have suffered my final failure. IT threw yet another hissing fit and corrupted the hard drive. This time, even TopHDRW couldn't resucitate my recordings, even with scan/match.

I'm sure I could massage its fading heart back to life, but I can no longer tolerate living with such a precocious best. The loss of all recordings made the decision quite easy, really.

So, farewell world of Topfield, I am sure I shall miss the fabulous Mystuff facilities, but I shall not miss wondering when my next failure will be.

Yes, no posts anywhere on the forum (as far as I can see) for nearly a fortnight. Just trying one here to see if the forum is still working OK.

Edit: Yes seems to be working. (image)

Is there any way to improve padding on back to back recordings on the same channel when nothing else is recording?

A few recordings come up that I want to export to USB that are in the guide back to back. They're stuff on channels like Citv that have a relaxed attitude to broadcast times and they end up getting their starts or ends cut off because even when mystuff schedules them on different tuners it leaves the padding off between them.

I know there's merge back to back recordings (K9) but I prefer to have that switched off, as when it's on I always run out of space because I don't get around to watching one half of all the merged recordings I get.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Last night I had a crash of MyStuff (probably self-inflicted!!) which resulted in an empty EPG.

I left it on afterwards for about 30 minutes and it had partly repopulated before I shut down to standby for the night.

This morning I brought it back up at about 0700 and now (0930) it has almost repopulated, apart from some gaps on Chan 4, including one tomorrow.

How long would you expect it to take from empty to completely restored?

Using the standard EPG, nothing clever.

Bugs :: Toppy clashing with DVD player
Author: dur
Subject: Toppy clashing with DVD player
Posted: Sun Jan 28, 2018 4:55 pm (GMT 1)
Topic Replies: 21

We have just bought a new TV which only has one scart socket, so I have bought a two input scart switch to connect the Toppy and a DVD player, both of which only have scart outputs.

But when the DVD player and Toppy are both on, for example when watching a DVD and the Toppy comes on to record, we get a corrupted version of the Toppy screen scrolling across, with the sound from the DVD. Otherwise, everything works fine - the Toppy picture with the DVD on, the TV picture with both or either on, etc.

I cannot figure out what is going wrong. I have tried swapping over the scart inputs at the switch, but get the same problem, so I don't think it's the scart switch. The scart switch has a two position switch - in for one input, out for the other.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, and how to fix it?

Thanks.

My brother in law asked me asked me to have a look at his mother in laws Bush B500PVR which was stuck on standby. Had a look at it and could see 3 very iffy (domed) capacitors and couldn't seem to find a 12v output from the PSU. replaced the 3 caps and it fired straight up with all recordings timers etc intact.
Caps were Sam Young, 2 x 1000uf 25V and 1 x 470uf 16V
replaced with 2 x Panasonic Low ESR 1000uf 25V and 1 x Panasonic Low ESR 470uf 25V
Seems very similar to this http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=271228&highlight=#271228 and the Toppy PSU capacitor problems

We’ve just upgraded both TVs to new 4K models which don’t have SCART or composite inputs so I’m selling both our TF5800s. Very sad to see ‘em go, the silver one I’ve had for ten years, it’s almost like an old friend! They’ve been such great value for money but we’ve been using YouView PVRs (often through gritted teeth!) for HD for a few years now so the Toppys were rarely used even when we had the old TVs with SCART input.

Only reason I’m selling as opposed to giving them away is that they both have 1.5TB HDDs (Western Digital WD15EADS) fitted using a SATA bridge purchased from Turbosat.

The black one is still going strong. The silver one sometimes fails to power down after recording and occasionally will fail to respond to the remote. Caps probably need replacing. They were last replaced on both units in 2013.

I don't come on this forum too often but I just wanted to say THANK YOU to all the men here who have worked to make this system, and community, possible, as well as the kind help I have received from various members when I've been up the creek without a paddle. It is very much appreciated!

I was going to start listing names (BobD, Geoff Bacon, EMJB, etc.) but I'd likely miss important people out. There are many men who have contributed, and I don't know them all, but you can all be assured that I am truly grateful.

I really don't know what I would have done without my Toppy + MyStuff over the past 7 or 8 years or so, it's made using the TV an infinitely better experience and I shudder to think of all the people out there using regular set top boxes without it! What a dreadful thought!

User interfaces matter to me. They matter a great deal. In fact, to be perfectly honest, I am more concerned about my TV having a good user interface than I am about actually watching TV! LOL! I just feel happy knowing that my stuff works properly… and that MyStuff works properly.

Well, I suppose the time may come when I may think about switching to a satellite box. Maybe in a few years, perhaps. But for now at least I think there's still life in the Toppy, and I've grown fond of it.

And as for the Toppy not having HD… I don't even own an HD TV, and HD recordings are unnecessarily huge, so why would I want that?

So anyway… thanks guys! (image)

Came across this randomly on ebay, a TRF-8800HD

Looks like it's in Australia, at first glance it looks like a 5810 with features like these Enigma boxes...

I've read other recent threads, but thought this was sufficiently different to start a new one. In the past month, I've started noticing artefacts and sound drop-outs on both recordings and live. Looking at previous threads, I've checked the following:

- the tuners are showing 100 quality and signal on both tuners.
- The toppy has been restarted in the past couple of days when our hot water tank sprang a leak and fused the sockets (image)
- The disk has never had less than 50Gb free and wasn't showing any problems when I ran fscheck a month ago - is it worth rerunning that?

Is there anything else I can check?

I have two 5800 Toppys needing to be disposed of.

They have not been used for quite a while and neither fully work. I have one remote control.

One has a faulty tuner but the other tuner was still working last time I tried it.

The other suddenly stopped working - possibly a power supply fault.

Both have had the initial recommendation set of capacitors replaced (supplied by Andy Fras) but not the extra ones now recommended.

If anyone can take them off my hands I would be most grateful. Location Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire. Otherwise it will have to be the local tip!

I can't guarantee that the info in the signature is current!

I should have taken the advice to replace capacitors when I started using Toppy again.

It had been working ok so never got round to it but came back from a 2 week holiday to find it had frozen and it now just keeps rebooting or freezing after about 30 seconds. HDD spins up for 10 seconds or so then either reboots or freezes and just sits there with frozen TV picture on screen.

Checked voltages and 5V is low (4.3V) and 12V is high didn’t bother going any further and is now unplugged.

Been onto Andy’s web site but can’t see how to purchase a kit and it also says

Rebooting - U20 regulator m'board - Tab should measure 1.5V, if not, replace with LD1117DT (left side of cardslot)

Would it be a good idea to get one of these at the same time or replace caps and see how it goes?

Hi.

Can anyone recommend a fan for fitting to either a 5800 or 5810 to help with cooling?

Old posts I've found seem to have out of date links and images.

What I have seen is either a fan below the HDD or one under the top cover vents.

Also which connector would I need to get power to the fan?

I do have a fairly small 12v fan from a type 1 BT visions box that might work.

Thanks

Hi

My remote on my only 5810 is very sluggish.

I have tried the obvious ie batteries.

I have had ot apart which is not easy and given it a very good clean. Temporarily it helped. But soon goes back to sluggish.

If I watch the display on the Toppy where the remote symbol appears when pressing any button this is as sluggish and inconsistent as the response of anything happening.

Then when it does work ie button for recordings archive, it works twice because of holding it down longer and I get the native archive.

The capacitors were all replaced approx three and a half years ago.

I'm trying to establish from the symptoms if it's the remote itself or the capacitors.

Thanks
