Freeview, TopUp and TV :: Freeview diurnal variability

Hiya,

Just a few thoughts - open to comment/explanation (image)

Where I now live we have two options for Freeview... point the aerial at Pontypridd relay for the (idiotic) reduced channel compliment or point it through Mynnyd PwllYrHebog at Wenvoe for a full channel confection.

Of course I have a high gain antenna pointed through the mountain and distributed through the house by a UHF distribution amplifier... which works surprisingly well.

However it seems at least one mux (the one carrying Dave) only works during the day! come evening it gets no signal reported by the TV... and also breaks up in foul weather (well it would, so no surprise there). Slightly more bizarrely that mux didn't used to be available, but sprung up one day when we re-tuned the TV (not the Toppy) and even more peculiarly one Panasonic plasma can receive it and the other can't (both are on up to date firmware)

What is a slight puzzle to me is the fantastic reliability of the work/doesn't work nature of the availability... its not like it fades in and out its just there, or not.

Looking at a line of sight app, we shouldn't get any signal from Wenvoe, the mountain is just too big, so what signal we do get must be refracting or something more subtle.

The Toppy needs a retune - but its working well at the moment without Dave etc. but I am reluctant to mess with a working system (image)

tl;dr Analogue signals carrying digital TV display slightly odd characteristics in a valley in South Wales

General Toppy discussions :: BBC MUX down - result corrupt recordings!

Subject: BBC MUX down - result corrupt recordings!

Every bl**dy autumn the leaves fall and sooner or later a MUX or another will go down at Crystal Palace causing all my recordings to corrupt themselves.

Unfortunately this happened once more, just as I was about to retire the Toppy with an almost full 1TB disk and move on to a HD PVR. I ran TopHDRW and performed a filesystem check, only to watch it reporting many hundreds of 'fixes' like these:

Fixed: Files - File '\DataFiles\Comedy\8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown_170922.rec' is shorter than expected : changed size from 1,21 GB to 0 B

I opted to exit, rather than writing the files on the disk and risking a major domestic crisis.

Is there a way to recover all these recordings? What steps should I follow? I recall I was able to recover corrupted recordings in the past using TopHDRW, but there were also occasions where they were completely lost.

Still using one of my Toppys - as it is full of things I need to watch - but now buying a new telly. Seems Scart sockets are no longert standard. Is there a converter cable anyone recommends on here?

Have a toppy from Andy.
Last night it recorded none of the progs I had timers for.
I set up a PS just now for a prog at 0730 today.
Now at 0740 green roundel has changed to red spot in the EPG.
Timer is still shown in the list of timers.
Nothing is recording.
I rescanned before this and cut channels to 20 odd.
Will reinstalling MS help.
Any other suggestions please?

Computer connections :: Antares failure: RESOLVED

Hi,

I'm trying to run Antares, this Windows 10 laptop had a problem earlier this year which re-installing Z4t fixed.

It's happened again! This time I can't fix it. Windows 10 64bit machine, not an upgrade.

I have the USB cable connected to Toppy and the laptop. I start Antares, which connects to Toppy and displays the list of recordings.
I select any one of many files to copy or select (say) 2 (makes no difference).
I can select 'Move' or not, (makes no difference).
I can select 'Turbo' mode or not, (makes no difference).
The directory to receive the file(s) is selected.

I click the → button, Antares says 'Finding Files' > 'Copying Files', Do nothing for approximately 15 seconds, then Windows says "Antares has stopped working".

This is exactly what happened earlier this year, re-installing Z4t makes no difference.

I've tried TopManager but can't find how to export files, if indeed TopManager is supposed to enable that, I thought I'd read that it did, but wonder if it's just Taps and Firmware that it deals with.
TopManager says there's a 'Patch' missing but I can't see where (or if) it states which patch is missing.

Poppa.

I'm wondering if what I have in mind is possible?

I would like to be able to record freeview channels to a current shared network server (or other central device), so that they can be viewed on a couple of different TVs in the house. I don't mind having to have some sort of recording/playback device on each TV.

Basically a couple of Toppys that will record to a central disk would do.

All with a nice MyStuff type scheduling / playback interface of course!

Anyone using a TalkTalk Huawei DN3272T?

Just wondered if there is any way to either clone the drive in order to upgrade to a larger capacity or even to mount it on Windows or Linux just to be able to pull recordings off??

Ive tried to clone the original drive with Acronis True Image but the new drive wasn't accepted?

I was in the middle of watching a recording while 2 programmes were being recorded. It must have been around the time when the first recording finished that I got a series of MS message boxes. The first one or two were "Information Memory Deallocation Error 160" followed by numerous boxes with "Information Memory Deallocation Error 161". After some time, it came up with another one or two 160 errors, followed by numerous 161 errors. There's a short video here.

I tried to stop playback, but it was unresponsive. Exit closes the window, but another pops up immediately. I cannot regain control of the Toppy, so I guess I just have to wait till it sorts itself out or crashes (image)

MyStuff :: Restore management problems...

After a couple of crashes recently (seems to be more frequent since last rescan) I went into restore management and it crashed. I try an earlier date, same thing happens. If the capacitors (all 13) hadn't been replaced in the last few months I'd suspect the PSU.

This is what happens... I enter restore management (option Z10), select any (even just settings) option to restore. The L spins round for "loading" and then I get the crash. VF&F on reboot quite often and then MyStuff loads normally. This happens with 100% consistency.

I then dig out an older Toppy from storage (a spare in case the first fails) and try it. The same happens. I try it tapless, starting MyStuff manually and still get a crash.

MyStuff is 6.6 on both. No signal strength issues. Fscheck reports no problems and checks for MyStuff in Topmanager show fine. Firmware is MyStuff recommended with a few extra minor patches.

Does anyone else get this or is there something odd going on with my 2 Toppys? I'm assuming this isn't expected behaviour.

I updated the 9 capacitors on my TF5810 4 years ago with a kit from Andy. Someone on Usenet is saying the 8/9 replacement policy is too few:

That is *so* last year's advice (image)

It's up to at least 13 caps now, basically everything but the big
fat one across the rectified mains!

Seriously: If you only did 8 or 9, the rest will be getting tired
real soon (image)

Is there a change or is the poster confused with the TF5800?

I've recently seen adverts saying that the channels "Tiny Pop" and Kix are moving.

Hang on… I don't have those channels. I've retuned (with Channel Organizer). I haven't seen "Tiny Pop" on the list for a few years now, and I've never seen Kix ever on the list.

The only children's channels I have are CBBC, CBeebies, CITV and Pop.

Are there a whole bunch of channels that the Toppy can't receive? Or is this a regional thing? I live in the South West.
