General Toppy discussions :: Does such a thing exist? Freeview recording to network?

I'm wondering if what I have in mind is possible?

I would like to be able to record freeview channels to a current shared network server (or other central device), so that they can be viewed on a couple of different TVs in the house. I don't mind having to have some sort of recording/playback device on each TV.

Basically a couple of Toppys that will record to a central disk would do.

All with a nice MyStuff type scheduling / playback interface of course!

Anyone using a TalkTalk Huawei DN3272T?

Just wondered if there is any way to either clone the drive in order to upgrade to a larger capacity or even to mount it on Windows or Linux just to be able to pull recordings off??

Ive tried to clone the original drive with Acronis True Image but the new drive wasn't accepted?

I was in the middle of watching a recording while 2 programmes were being recorded. It must have been around the time when the first recording finished that I got a series of MS message boxes. The first one or two were "Information Memory Deallocation Error 160" followed by numerous boxes with "Information Memory Deallocation Error 161". After some time, it came up with another one or two 160 errors, followed by numerous 161 errors. There's a short video here.

I tried to stop playback, but it was unresponsive. Exit closes the window, but another pops up immediately. I cannot regain control of the Toppy, so I guess I just have to wait till it sorts itself out or crashes (image)

MyStuff :: Restore management problems...

After a couple of crashes recently (seems to be more frequent since last rescan) I went into restore management and it crashed. I try an earlier date, same thing happens. If the capacitors (all 13) hadn't been replaced in the last few months I'd suspect the PSU.

This is what happens... I enter restore management (option Z10), select any (even just settings) option to restore. The L spins round for "loading" and then I get the crash. VF&F on reboot quite often and then MyStuff loads normally. This happens with 100% consistency.

I then dig out an older Toppy from storage (a spare in case the first fails) and try it. The same happens. I try it tapless, starting MyStuff manually and still get a crash.

MyStuff is 6.6 on both. No signal strength issues. Fscheck reports no problems and checks for MyStuff in Topmanager show fine. Firmware is MyStuff recommended with a few extra minor patches.

Does anyone else get this or is there something odd going on with my 2 Toppys? I'm assuming this isn't expected behaviour.

I updated the 9 capacitors on my TF5810 4 years ago with a kit from Andy. Someone on Usenet is saying the 8/9 replacement policy is too few:

Quote:
That is *so* last year's advice (image)

It's up to at least 13 caps now, basically everything but the big
fat one across the rectified mains!

Seriously: If you only did 8 or 9, the rest will be getting tired
real soon (image)

Is there a change or is the poster confused with the TF5800?

Can anybody let me have a copy, please?

I've recently seen adverts saying that the channels "Tiny Pop" and Kix are moving.

Hang on… I don't have those channels. I've retuned (with Channel Organizer). I haven't seen "Tiny Pop" on the list for a few years now, and I've never seen Kix ever on the list.

The only children's channels I have are CBBC, CBeebies, CITV and Pop.

Are there a whole bunch of channels that the Toppy can't receive? Or is this a regional thing? I live in the South West.

Just wanted to report that (due to bad aerial signal) I recently lost all the data on my Toppy hard drive!

But help was on hand… Once again I got in touch with the forum's resident data recovery expert Geoff Bacon, sent the box off to him, and for a very small fee he got all my files back, fixed the box up, and sent it back to me very prompty!

Legend! (image) Thanks Geoff!

Hi, wonder if anyone can help…

Due to a poor aerial signal (getting it fixed soon) my Toppy often crashes.

After a reboot it sometimes shows the "checking files for errors" screen, but sometimes it doesn't, and just hangs on the default Toppy info box for the current channel with controls locked out.

After several reboots/ power offs, it sometimes becomes useable without hard drive access. Then after even more resetting, I will eventually get lucky and it will show the "checking files" message, after which MyStuff will start loading!

But just wondered if there was some tip that could make it work better? (Other than getting my aerial fixed, which I am doing!)

(I'd normally search through the forums to find an answer to this but at the minute my internet access is really limited, sorry.)

Cheers

(Rather forgotten how to use this forum so may be in wrong subject - sorry.) Found out so copied here from MyStuff.

I have just received back two of my old unusable Toppies repaired/refurbished by Toppy guru Andy Fraser so they were in perfect shape.

Let me say at the start that the 2nd one is working just fine but the other went haywire, I think due to the use of my new Logik TV.
I'm wondering if this is a known issue or what others think about it.

If my analysis is correct then I wish to warn others.

As the remote keys were doing absurd things or not doing anything at all (the Text key turned off the TV, Menu gave Favourites, Right key changed channels up but impossible to change down, etc., etc.) I saw that the Toppy remote was activating some functions of the TV.

It seems this somehow caused the Toppy to malfunction - any ideas?

What I should have done perhaps if I had known was to use the Toppy remote on my TV first to see if there was any response.

Luckily I still have my old TV which I used when I was a Toppy user (2 years ago?) so connecting that the damage was still there.

Now setting up the other Toppy with the old TV it is working OK.

I'd be interested in comments.

Ignore my old signature.

My TF5800 caused problems recently, repeated "Format HDD" messages, so I gave up on it and got a Humax.

If anyone would like a Toppy for spares, repair etc and can collect from Oxford, you're welcome to it.

I don't check the forums too often but I'll try to remember to keep looking!

BTW, impressions of the Humax FVP-4000t for anyone interested:
3 tuners, excellent for simultaneous recording.
Freeview HD recording, great to have HD.
Interface: good but a little slow to respond at times and after MyStuff, lacking in functionality. E.g. no option to move recordings to folders.

Cheers
Andy
