Todd, I think it was this episode that you were expressing your sentiments regarding MINI's direction and how they have lost their way. It was interesting to me that in last month's Fast Company I read this quote in a branding article and specifically about being overrated: "BMW is one that sounds out to me. When you compare them to other luxury cars like Audi or Tesla, BMW doesn't really stand for anything. I admire what Tesla and Audi are doing because they care about the world we live in, the environment, and it just seems they know their audience in a what that's more sophisticated." - Chief Creative Officer

My MINI dealer is just a car dealer to me. I don't feel anything more for them. The service department was pretty blah in the past and I had gone elsewhere once it was out of warranty. I have a new MINI now so I'll be going back for scheduled free maintenance but beyond that I have other sources, and Chads shop isn't so far away so I will look him up if mods or bigger work arises out of warranty

I have to argue with Chad in regard to his explanation of the bubbles in the sidewalls on Alex's car. Chad is correct that the bubbles are a result of impact damage from hitting potholes, but the reason is not a separation of the belts, but a cut on the inner liner of the tire at the sidewall where the rim and tire compressed and cut the liner at the point of impact. The inner liner is what allowed tires manufacturers to dispense with the inner tube. Because the inner liner, which BTW is what keeps the air in your tire, is now compromised, air is leaking out to between the radial plys and the outer layer of rubber, showing up as a bubble. The only thing holding air in the tire is now that thin layer of outer rubber at the bubble....not a lot of safety here!

I agree totally with your comments about how a MINI (and previously my two Miatas) provides the highlight of my day...driving to/from work is oftentimes the best part of my day. There are drivers/Motorers and then there are those who drive appliances to/from any given destination. There will never be a successful "driverless" MINI.... Motorers don't drive appliances.

Comment on Woofcast 612: The New Todd by Darren Mayes

Mon, 19 Dec 2016 17:39:40 +0000

This podcast was a bit of a conundrum for me with regard to the self-driving cars.

I have always been of the mindset that one of the reasons that mass transit is not more popular in the US is due to our love affairs with our cars. As a future MINI owner (and you being current MINI owners), do we really want to give up the autonomy of driving an automobile that we have paid a premium for (when you consider size / gas mileage)?

Does everyone doubt that once this capability comes about that it will eventually be legislated that if you have a car that has self-driving capabilities, that they be used all of the time? With higher precision capabilities will come an increase in lanes for the current road widths. As an example, given current road widths that support two lanes, with automated driving, could probably support 3 lanes.

Would I love to get in my automobile (which will hopefully be more like an optimized compact motor home with TV, sleeper sofa) after work and wake up in Nashville the next morning well-rested to go visit my family? Sure.

Obviously, we may not see this in our lifetimes, but I am not necessarily as "excited" about this eventuality as you all seem to be. When this transition is complete, the performance choices between cars will be obsolete (as they will probably be mandated for equality) and the price differences will be based on the exterior stylings and the luxurious aspects of the interior.

I would be interested in your opinion(s) on this.

Hey guys, just a note to say that I've had the same as Todd regarding stop-start and the volume drop.

Only happens when I have it loud, and I'm sure it goes back up when it's finished turning the starter motor. It happens on my F56 JCW (2016)and also my old R58 JCW (2014) both of which have/had HK. Didn't happen on my R55 Cooper S (2009) or R56 Cooper D, but they didn't have HK so I wondered if it was to do with the power required to feed the HK amp whilst restarting the engine?

Getting caught up on WWR and listened to your lock issue. I just hit the unlock when I am getting out of my car. Then from the outside when I push the button it locks the car. Otherwise on the outside pressing the button once will unlock all the doors and you have to wait to press it again to lock all the doors.

Alex, on your drive to Santa Cruz Mts and area, I thought I heard you say that you drove Hwy 17.

For your next trip to the area, I recommend trying the following:

Go south (take 280 - boring but, it's get better - lol) to Hwy 84 Woodside/La Honda Road. Hwy 84 west to Hwy 1. South on Hwy 1 to Hwy 9. Hwy 9 north/east to Hwy 35 (at Boulder Creek)

Hwy 35 south to Bear Creak Road. Bear Creak Road north/east to Old Santa Cruz Hwy. At junction of Bear Creak Rd and Old Santa Cruz Hwy turn right onto Old Santa Cruz Hwy (going south) and drive to Aldercroft Heights Road till you get to Alma Bridge Road. Turn north (left) at junction of Aldercorft and Alma Bridge Road. Alma Bridge Road follows Lexington Reservoir (first the road winds through forest). Alma Bridge Road will take you back to Hwy 17.

The drive has lots of nice scenery and twisty. Also there is a nice rustic American style restaurant at junction of Hwy 84 and 35 Skyline. Name of place is Alice's.

Congrats on your new JCW. I bought my F56 Cooper S at Mini of San Francisco. Bought my 1st MIni in 2004 (R50) from them too. One suggestion though for others thinking of buying a MINI who live in and around San Francisco, there are 4 other MINI dealers in the Bay Area.

Get a quote from at least two of the other dealers first before going to SF MINI. I got a quote from 3 of the other 4. SF MINI did price match.

Alex, I agree with you on the door lock issue. Drove me nuts. The only way to have it like any other car where you just press the button once outside is to code it using esys. What it will do after coding is to automatically unlock all doors when you turn off the engine. Once all of the doors are unlocked, you can exit the car, close the door and press the button once to lock all doors.

A few other things I changed through coding: - Disable legal disclaimer - Turn off MMI when door is opened - Turn on Brake Force Flashing with Hard Braking - Enable Illumination of Exterior Door Handle LEDs when in Reverse - Show Tire Pressure and Temperature in iDrive

Great show, guys! Alex, your comfort access door lock issue is common. If you just pull the handle twice when getting out, I think the system does now know the doors are unlocked. So, you have to push the button twice, once to 'unlock' the car and a second time to lock the car. I have gotten used to pushing the unlock button on the door as I go to pull the handle. Then, when I lock from the outside, I only have to push the button once. A little weird to start, but I have gotten very used to the sequence now. Enjoy the JCW!

Greetings

I've been listening to your podcast since the very beginning. All the while lamenting that in Anchorage AK there was no Mini dealer. That all changed in 2013 and I began to plan a course toward my 1st Mini. Several things got in the way, but I finally traded in my 2002 Ford Excursion (who I promptly named Moby) for a certified used 2013 2 door Baker Street Edition in Black with the 6 speed auto, just last Saturday I would have gotten a stick, but Diabetes related foot issues mean its auto only. I am impressed with the amazing handling and the sport button just adds fun. Guys I am finally getting it what you've been saying all these years that this car makes me invent errands to have an excuse to go drive even a couple of miles to the corner store for stuff. I have not had that feeling since I was driving around Miami in the 80's in My Charger. I'm now Mini Committed!!!

Finally starting to Motor On Paul Spatzek Anchorage Alaska

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 06:23:58 +0000

Guys, in 2015 the Connected+Visual Boost (6.5" screen) cost $500. Making the visual boost now standard I don't feel MINI is "giving" something. I believe MINI decided to have visual boost as a standard item because for 2018 model year cars, NHTSA requires cars to have a backup camera, MINI are just setting up for requirement ahead of time. So the price increase is really only a discount on the VB but still charging the buyer for it.

Per Gabe on his MF piece he didn't write that the MINI Excitement Lighting can be ordered as a $250 option. Gabe wrote: "Across all models MINI has moved the “MINI Excitement Lighting” to the premium package."

On the Armrest (C&D) issue, other reviews have noted comfort/interference issues with it when using idrive type controller. (Starting at minute 4:29 of video to minute 4:55 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1f5A5hADRU)

On driving modes, again Gabe notes in MF article that to get it, "you’ll need to opt for the Sport package in order to select Sport, Normal and Green modes" He did not state DM could be purchased a la carte for $500.

Btw, I use Green mode quite often. I also use sport mode (less than Green but still use it).

I feel MINI is trying to push buyers to get a Cooper S and away from the Cooper. Which is a shame. Don't know if this action will result in US sales falling even more or not.

Heh Todd & db, I have the Black Victory Spokes - I love them!!!! No dis'n my spokes. For me the 16" Silver Loop Spokes are ugly.

Btw, I agree with Alex, to me, if you don't have a JCW, why get JCW non performance kit. It's not a JCW.

Top Gear MINI is a non S.
