NEWS: Women's Climbing Symposium 2017: Report


(image) On the first weekend of November, over 400 women from eight countries (including a group of seven from Iceland!) converged on Bloc Climbing in Bristol for the seventh annual Women's Climbing Symposium.

NEWS: Franco Cookson climbs hard highball at Highcliffe Nab


(image) Franco Cookson has climbed the 'magic scoop' project at Highcliffe Nab; a hard and highball line that heads up an off vertical arete and into a scoop. The contorted scoop at the top is 'friendly at its bottom right and wildly imposing at its top left.' Franco has said the line is harder than MYXOMOP (E9/8A), but potentially safer depending on how you fall.

NEWS: New Hut Proposed for Aonach Mor


(image) The Inverness Backcountry Snowsports Club would like to build a mountain hut on the east flank of Aonach Mor. Sleeping 8-12 people, it would be sited northeast of Coire an Lochain, near the Back Corries area of the Nevis Range ski centre.

NEWS: Access Restrictions at Kyloe in the Woods


(image) Climbers have reportedly been asked to leave Kyloe in the Woods on several occasions in recent weeks due to deerstalking. There has been a sign on the entrance gate asking climbers to avoid the woods because of live firing. BMC NE Area Rep Franco Cookson has commented: 'The deerstalker reportedly said that if climbers continue to ignore his sign, he will complain to the forestry management. This could result in loss of access. I appreciate that it might be annoying to drive all the way to Kyloe and then find that you can't climb there, but it is a small compromise in order to maintain good access arrangements at this important NE crag.'

NEWS: Bronze for Molly Thompson-Smith in Kranj World Cup


(image) 20 year old Molly Thompson-Smith won bronze in the final round of the IFSC Lead World Cup in Kranj, Slovenia this weekend. This is the first medal won by a British female competitor in a senior IFSC lead event. Two-time boulder World Cup champion Shauna Coxsey competed in what was her first ever lead World Cup and achieved a respectable 6th place in the event.

NEWS: Two Brits in Kranj Lead WC Finals Today


(image) Molly Thompson-Smith and Shauna Coxsey have qualified for the IFSC Lead World Cup finals in Kranj, Slovenia in 5th and 7th place respectively. This was Shauna's first ever World Cup in lead, having specialised in bouldering and won the overall World Cup title in 2016 and 2017. The finals will be streamed at 4pm UK time today.
