Punk rock, rockabilly, ska, and every sound from the underground. The idea is to provide a weekly mixtape to brighten up your Monday morning. It might be a genre theme, it might be an idea... it's whatever liquor-addled idea pops into my twisted little mi

North Vs. South

Sun, 12 Aug 2007 01:58:38 +0000

Last night, from 8pm-midnight on KJHK 90.7FM, I played some of the finest music representing next weekend's North Vs. South Music Festival. The brainchild of legendary songwriter Mike McCoy, the festival is a means of bringing together friends old and new. Austin, Texas and Minneapolis, Minnesota have produced numerous quality rock and roll groups in the last 20-50 years. All is showcased here on neutral ground in Lawrence, KS annually. The best from north and south perform live on the anniversary of Quantrill's raid on Lawrence in 1863. This year's festival takes place August 16-18 at Louise's Upstairs, the Replay Lounge, the Replay Lounge patio and the Jackpot Saloon. I spun music from this and past year's performers. Listen for stuff from Honeywagen, the Bitter Spills, Grand Champeen, Kruddler, the Rockland Eagles, the New Vintage, the Meat Purveyors, the Brannock Device, the Red Flags, Chooglin', Pong, Ben Hayter & the Ex-Rays, the Undesirables, Charlie Parr, God's Favorite Band, Truck Stop Love, and many more. Sunglasses after dark

Sun, 01 Oct 2006 20:58:36 +0000

So, I apologize for the one-month podcast hiatus. I've been crazy busy with school and work and familial obligations. This is to say nothing of the hectic nature of running a two-hour radio program every week and working music staff for the radio station. Basically, I'm so overwhelmed with music, it was a chore to even begin thinking of doing this. The few times I sat down to get started, it pretty much either ended in an accidental deletion or WinAmp crash. However, being as I had some playlists from my show lying around, I figured I could give you all a taste of what I do every Saturday morning on Sunglasses After Dark. Rock out to the music that made generations of parents nervous; the music that only allowed Elvis filmed from the waist up. Spinning rockabilly, psychobilly, screamin' garage, and anything else scandalous enough for your Friday night. Track listing: Sunglasses After Dark intro Dwight Pullen - Sunglasses After Dark the Cramps - I Ain't Nothing But a Gorehound Misfits - Hybrid Moments Johnny Cash - Ballad of a Teenage Queen the Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers - Funny Little Feeling HorrorPops - Where They Wander the Nerve Agents - Jekyl and Hyde Cleopatra Jones trailer Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Frenzy Rancid - Something In The World Today Motörhead - Jailbait Nekromantix - Dead Girls Don't Cry Curtis Gordon - Draggin' Sicko - Closer To Fine Dillinger Four - Doublewhiskeycokenoice Blitz - Someone's Gonna Die Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon trailer Mad Sin - London Dungeon Fear - The Mouth Don't Stop (The Trouble With Women Is) the Gun Club - Preaching The Blues Vernon Taylor - Mystery Train Reagan Youth - Reagan Youth Johnny Rivers - Midnight Special the Oppressed - We're the Hooligans Sham 69 - If The Kids Are United

Well, sorry for this being a day late. I got all caught up with school and my new radio show and music staff over at KJHK that I plumb forgot to do a podcast this week. For that I am sorry. I imagine you all are somewhat upset with me, and feel the need to give your frustrations sufficient voice. For that reason, I give you this podcast. I'm in a great mood, and I just feel like yelling. Track listing: The Bronx - Bats! Ska's the limit

Sun, 20 Aug 2006 23:30:59 +0000

Summer's winding down, and it's starting cool off here in Lawrence. School started last week, and Labor Day is but a couple weeks away. So, for one last gasp of summer music, I've put together a little bit of ska that ought to help you make it through the week. As the heat starts to die down and you realize you're looking at a long spell of cold weather, spice up your day with this batch of tunes. If nothing else, you're set with some great driving music. The live tracks from the Pietasters and Spring Heeled Jack come courtesy of Boston Ska from when they used to have mp3s. That was several years back, but I managed to hold onto these through three different computers, and they're well worth the effort. Hope you enjoy. Track listing: Gals Panic - Gals Panic The Aggrolites - Dirty Reggae Spring Heeled Jack - East End Gangster (live) Hepcat - Earthquake and Fire Ruskabank - Hothead (live) Skavoovie & the Epitones - Riversion Reel Big Fish - The Fire The Uprights - 31st & Gillham Skatalites - Nimble Foot Ska The Invaders - Spy's Demise The Pietasters - Sheila (live) The Slackers - So This Is The Night (live on NPR) Let's Go Bowling - Spy Market Rancid w/ Stubborn All-Stars - I Wanna Riot The Specials - The Skinhead Symphony In Three Movements The Urge - Take Me Home
