iptables question

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 06:03:58 -0700

So I have been playing around with CloudStack the past few days in my home lab and Im trying to access the web portal via my ISP public IP. When I hit the portal from the public IP I get to the page but it seems that all of the CSS and prettiness is stripped away and I am wondering if I need to make some changes somewhere in the iptables.

But here is where it gets tricky. My lab runs in VMware Workstation on a NATd network. So my PC network is 10.10.10.0/24 and my CloudStack lab is running 192.168.10.0/24. I enabled port forwarding through the NAT and I enabled port forwarding through my router. I can hit the web page just fine via my workstation but coming in from the outside I get the ugly login page.

There could be other factors at work here beyond iptables but just wanted to be sure I am covering my bases as I am not Linux savvy.

The OS is CentOS 7.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Id like to know if there is a way to create an Ubuntu install disk from an ubuntu that is already installed.
I have a server that I have set up on my local machine that is quite complex (for me). Is there a way to create an install disk so I can clone this installed ubuntu with all the stuff installed on it to another machine?

Ubuntu and RaidZ

Sun, 13 Jul 2014 20:44:05 -0700

Well just to start off I had made a server with a SUPERMICRO MBD-A1SRi-2758F-O mobo with 32gigs ram and 7 WD red 4tb hard drives and a 250gb Samsung SSD for the os.

I am wanting to use this server strickly as my NAS with a possible web server as well.(but for now NAS)

I know that there is different Raid levels 0,1,5,6,10,60 and then Raid-Z

I am using a SUPERMICRO AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 to connect some of my drives and would not be seen with FreeNAS.

Now my question is would it be better to use Ubuntu with ZFS (raid-z) and samba or just use unRaid or what do you recommend?

Out of the 7 drives I know some will need to be used for the Raid. I need one setup in a way that if a drive/s fail it will be okay and I can recover the data. aka document files. I am going to use another raid in raid 1 for my files and then if I have a drive left over I will use it for whatever.

Thanks for the help.

Apache's "deny from" access control can really slow website

Mon, 14 Oct 2013 10:11:23 -0700

If you dont want to read this entire post, I will get right to the point. Make sure Apaches HostnameLookups is disabled and make sure that if you use access controls to block certain kinds of visitors, that you are only doing it blocking actual IP addresses. Never try to block domain names, or using wildcards in domain names. While it will work, the performance impact on your site can be horrible causing pages to take longer than 5-20 seconds to load. The rest of this post will explain everything in more detail. In the last few months I had noticed that all sorts of bad bots were coming from Amazons AWS which were using and abusing the services at Ozzu and other websites we host. For those of you do not know, Amazon AWS stands for Amazon Web Services and part of it is basically a cloud computing platform that allows small companies, individuals, or start-ups to get access to an extremely powerful system that makes it super affordable and giving you the power to scale extremely well. In theory this is probably a good thing, but there are still bad apples out there that use it for other things. For instance there may be a new search engine company that doesnt have the resources to obtain all the hardware necessary to have enough computing power to index the web, so they might start with Amazons AWS since it provides them just that at a much more affordable cost. While this may be good to have people trying to develop new search technology, its bad when there are lots of people trying this and fetching pages from our servers. Our servers can only handle so much, and we much prefer to allow our visitors to use our services first, not consumed by all sorts of bots that may never return anything to Ozzu. There may also be others out there that instead are out to simply scrape all of Ozzus pages and duplicate them for their own dubious purposes. Finally the reason for us making the decision to ban Amazon AWS, is it seems there are individuals who have created click bots using their services that click on everything on our website, including ads which causes another set of problems. So once we made the decision to ban Amazons AWS, we took the easiest route to do so by adding to an .htaccess file the following:code: Order Allow,DenyAllow from all Deny from *.amazonaws.com Deny from amazonaws.comThis worked quickly and anybody using Amazons Web Services quickly found they were only getting 403 errors. After a few days it appeared to be successful and things were looking much better as far as for the reasons we did it in the first place. After that it was basically forgotten.Unknowingly to us this caused a new sporadic problem that was actually difficult to trace. When ever you use Apaches Access Controls for denying or allowing IP addresses, its a simple operation that doesnt really have any bad consequences. So if I were to deny an IP address like this:code:Deny from 123.123.123.123That causes no issues as far as what I can see. The problem arises when you use actual domain names with Apaches Access Controls. So the following line:code:Deny from *.amazonaws.comeven though being simple and to the point, does much more than you think. It makes sense when you think about it, but tracing it down to these lines were much more difficult. When a web page loads on Ozzu in order to be able to Deny any of these AWS domains, what is required by Apache is to do a Reverse DNS look up on the IP visiting Ozzu. If using Linux, it first look at your /etc/hosts file, and then uses your local resolver to translate the visiting IP address to the domain name if it exists. For many IPs this works quickly and there are no problems. However, for many IPs either no reverse IP record is setup, or network problems can occur with our resolver since we use an external service for that. [...]

No Java on ChromeOS, What the heck!?

Fri, 12 Jul 2013 19:40:31 -0700

So, my wife is going back to school and we were toying with the idea of getting her a chromebook. I told her that when I was in school all I used was google apps for all my docs which was nice because I didnt need to carry a thumbdrive and always had the latest versions no matter which computer lab I was in on campus. Her university uses blackboard which requires java and it seems Google officially reports Java is not available and that VNC or someother browser-based chrome webstore plugin would be required to run legacy-apps and it read kinda like Google is not making a big deal out of this like my wife knows the first thing about remote access and remote to what - we are a home user and this was geared towards running ChromeOS in an edu environment.

Anyway, Im in the middle of golf and my wife emails me that ChromeOS does not support java because she checked with the university tech department and she forwarded me their reply. I thought they were idiots at her school, but I searched and official google blog says its not supported. ChromeOS is linux-based right? So, how screwed up do you have to be to not even install OpenJDK. I mean, Ive gone through LFS and built every binary of an entire linux system and could pick and choose aside from the core. Why isnt Java just consider core?

Please someone weigh in on how Google missed the boat on this one. Im almost scared to do anything Google now because they seem like they really dont know what theyre doing.

Additionally, I found some other forum sites where people were talking Java is dead and that HTML5 will help kill it. Whats up with that? I feel like I took a crazy-tech pill tonight or can the Ozzu community weigh in on any validity to this claim by obviously a second-rate forum. It seems ridiculous to me; not just that Java is on its way out but HTML will replace. HTML5 will be/is great. I actually even like the native drag/drop, but replacing Java. I hardly think so. Maybe, Flash but theres plenty of posts even here on Ozzu concerning that. Even so perhaps HTML5 will replace but never kill. Im tired of all this HTML5 killing stuff like a programming language like Oak. How does a few additional markup text kill an entire library and this cant be WHY CHROMEOS DOES NOT LOAD JAVA?
