In the Train of His Triumph

Fri, 17 Feb 2017 21:25 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: In the Train of His Triumph
Subtitle: Hebrews
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday - AM
Date: 2/12/2017
Bible: Hebrews 2:10-13; Isaiah 8
Length: 46 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Then the words that are quoted here in Hebrews 2-12, found in Psalm 22-22, -I will declare your name to my brothers. In the presence of the church, I will sing your praises.- Here is the suffering Savior, now raised from the dead, now exalted, now looking around at the church, the assembly -the word is ecclesia which means the church-. He looks around at this church that he has purchased by his own suffering and blood, and he joins them. He says, -in their midst, in the church, I will praise your name. I will declare your name. I will testify to your rescuing power by exalting your name.- He is bringing glory to God the Father through the praises of his human brothers and sisters, his human family. And he is saying to the Father that he is leading the singing, he is leading the praises of the assembly of the church. And he is publicly guiding his people to direct their praises to the resurrecting, exalting, glorified Father in heaven. Here is the Lord Jesus leading the church in its worship. By the way, there-s a great insight here into the worship of the church, that as we gather to God, our--praises are led by the Son of God. We have a Worship Leader here in this church, but he-s not on the platform. He-s in heaven. And he orchestrates the praises of God-s people and--directs them, by the Spirit, towards the Father. He is our great Worship Leader. And we-re--told here that he sings along with us. You want to know what he-s doing while we-re singing,--in church, the praises of God- He-s singing along with us. Only he-s singing in key--

Lower Than the Angels

Title: Lower Than the Angels
Subtitle: Hebrews
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher

Event: Sunday - AM
Date: 1/29/2017
Bible: Hebrews 2:5-9; Psalm 8
Length: 40 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Transcribed Extract- SEEING THE INVISIBLE GOD----So how are we going to see God- God has taken on our humanity, so that on that day we see God, we will see something that is familiar to us, and does not scare us. We will see the man Christ Jesus. The God-Man, who could say to his disciples, -If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.- On that day, we will see him. Transfigured. His physical body transfigured, glorified. And the amazing things is that that glory will irradiate us as well. And our resurrection bodies will glorified like his. We will have a body of glory like the risen and exalted Son. Jesus- body of glory. We will be like him- When he see him as he is- We will be changed- What is mortal will put on immortality. And we shall be like Jesus. Isn-t that a glorious thing- That this great glorious Lord of Glory should take onto himself our humanity, so that we will know him, see him, touch him, hear him, be embraced by him. And he took that humanity on so that he might taste death. That is that he might drink up that cup of the judgment of God, drink it up. Until there was nothing left. For the sake of his people. My prayer for you this morning that you would see this Jesus by faith and that you would make him your own Jesus.

Heirs of Salvation

Thu, 26 Jan 2017 16:12 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: Heirs of Salvation
Subtitle: Hebrews
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday - AM
Date: 1/22/2017
Bible: Hebrews 2:1-4; Exodus 7-12
Length: 43 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Transcribed Extract- LIFE ADRIFT----That, you know is something that can happen, it can happen easily in the Christian life. That-s what the writer is saying here. There is a kind of carelessness of mind, perhaps a preoccupation with other things, a lack of awareness of what-s going on. A kind of drifting, which is the opposite of -going on to maturity-, which the writer talks about, or -drawing near confidently to God- or -running the race that is set before us. All of those metaphors are used of the Christian life. And they-re energetic metaphors, aren-t they- There-s action involved. There-s determination involved. Grow up into maturity. Draw near to God with confidence. Run the race that-s set before you. And it can happen so silently, secretly, without your noticing. It maybe begins because you-re a bit nervous about making too much about your Christian profession in public. Or you-re afraid. The kinds of seasons in which it is easy to drift are probably seasons where, for example, you-re experiencing or enjoying peace and prosperity. Things are going well in your life. You-re well. The kids are well. The family is well. The world-s well. Everything-s well. The career-s doing famously. You-re doing famously. Everything is just whippety-do- It-s great-. And in those circumstances, well, serious thoughts aren-t the kind of thoughts you want to have. And in those circumstances, it is very easy to drift silently. And find yourself, a month, two months, two years, ten years, far away from where you are today. The danger of drifting-

Sitting in the Big Chair

Sat, 21 Jan 2017 16:36 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: Sitting in the Big Chair
Subtitle: Hebrews
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday - AM
Date: 1/15/2017
Bible: Hebrews 1:13-14; Psalm 110
Length: 44 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Transcribed Extract- LORD SPEAKS TO BEGOTTEN LORD----God is drumming it into their heads through the prophets again and again, -There is only one God, one God.- And yet even in that same revelation, there is something uncomfortable like this thing we are seeing here, -The Lord says to my Lord.- And you notice that the theme of chapter 1 of Hebrews is about God coming and speaking to us by one who is Son. And it is the Son who is in the mind of the author. He mentions him in verse 8 and everything hangs on that, -Of the Son he says,-- hangs on that. But where did he get that in Psalm 110.----Simon Gathercole, who teaches at Cambridge University, finds out that verse 3 of Psalm 110--in the Greek translation, reads like this---With you is the sovereign authority on the day of your power, in the midst of the bright splendors of the holy ones From the womb, before the dawn-bearing morning star appeared, I, the Lord, begot you, the Lord. In other words, the Greek translation favored by Jesus and the early church for its accuracy, says that before the dawn of time, before creation itself, the Son was begotten, not created, of the Father. And that even his human arrival, from the womb, would take place in an unusual fashion. In fact, we learn from Isaiah that he would be born from the womb of a virgin. So what we have then is this statement that this one, this second Lord, is begotten of the first Lord.

When Failure Isn't Final

Thu, 12 Jan 2017 06:52 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: When Failure Isn't Final
Subtitle: That You May Believe…
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday - PM
Date: 1/8/2017
Bible: John 21:15-25
Length: 37 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Transcribed Extract- TRUSTING HIS AUTHORITY IN OUR LIVES--There-s an emphasis here on the power and authority of Jesus. When he says, -If it be my will-- he-s not speaking in vague potential language. -Just supposing it was my will that he should remain-- But rather he is saying, -I have something in mind for his life. I have willed what-s going to happen to this man.- Jesus- will and God-s will are co-extensive. We see a change, by the way, in the way Jesus speaks to his disciples, post-resurrection, from the way in which he speaks to them before. Now there is almost no hint of the humanity element. Now in his glorified body, it-s as if the humanity and his deity are so fully glorified together that he does not hesitate to speak as God. And here he speaks as God and with God-s will. No longer the humble servant, now the Lord of Glory. And even in his humanity, emphasizing that he is the one who has planned out the lives of his people. He says it without apology, without explanation, without amplification. He says it as if they should know by now, after these weeks they have spent with him in his resurrection state, that he is God and that he is the Lord. -My Lord and my God,- as Thomas had said. He knows the end from the beginning, because he planned the end from the beginning. And so what he does to Peter is, he rebukes Peter-s futile speculation, as to the will of God. Yes, he had told Peter that he would die, in order to prove to us that his will is the will of God. He doesn-t tell John what-s going to happen to him, and he doesn-t tell us what-s going to happen to us in order that we might trust him.

Christianity Is Christ

Wed, 11 Jan 2017 20:32 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: Christianity Is Christ
Subtitle: Hebrews
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday Service
Date: 1/8/2017
Bible: Hebrews 1:10-12; Isaiah 40:28-31
Length: 41 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Transcribed Extract- The Mathematics of the Trinity-----The Three Persons of the Trinity at Jesus- Baptism- All together. Acting together. Acting inseparably, as they had done when then created the world in the first place. And God spoke. And the Word made it happen. And the Spirit descended and made it all come to pass. That-s the beginning of Matthew. Then if you didn-t understand how it all adds up, how Three go into One, right at the very end of the book-. Jesus risen from the dead- resurrected from the dead- breaking all the rules of nature in the process-. Jesus alive from the dead claiming authority in heaven and on earth. And in Matthew-s Gospel -heaven- always is a euphemism for -God-. The -kingdom of God- in the other Gospels is the -Kingdom of heaven- in Matthew-s Gospel. Heaven is where God is- heaven is God-s throne, and so on. All authority in heaven means all authority as God and all authority on earth in his human life as Jesus. All authority. He sends the church out to do what the church should do - make disciples, baptizing people, teaching them. Baptizing them -in the name- - singular - in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. And we discover that early on in the New Testament, the Divine Name, the Name that was named in the Old Testament, the Name of God, the singular God is singular - he is one God - and yet you can also describe three Persons in one God. That-s a mathematical conundrum that you are not going to solve in your lifetime. -Jesus says to the crowds, -How can he be David-s Lord and David-s son. How do you work that out---

Overview: Transcribed Extract- A Broad Sense and Narrow Sense of the Imago Dei----Now the Reformers, if it-s still a little hazy or confusing, the Reformers very helpfully, better than I, come and give us two senses in which we might speak of the image of God, brings us some clarity in how we are to speak about men being the imago dei, the image of God. And they speak about man being made in the image of God in a broad sense, as well as a narrow sense. When they speak about man made in a broad sense in the image of God, they are talking about the physical constitution of man, and particularly his spiritual soul and his intellect, his will, as we uniquely image God in a manner that no other creature does. And then when it speaks about the narrow sense, in which we image God, they bring into view the ethical component, the ethical component of original righteousness. And so the Reformers say that, in a large sense we are- in our physical constitution we image God in our rational capacities and our volitional capacity and yet in a narrow sense, it is ethical. Friends, the radical effect of sin is not only that we are cursed by God, put out of the Garden, put out of the very presence of God, but that we lost the image of God in a narrow sense, original righteousness. Not only that, but sin marred, corrupted, spoiled our physical constitution, that even our rational faculties are corrupted, our will is turned inward and away from God.

"Home Shall Men Come..." G K Chesterton

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 18:19 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: "Home Shall Men Come..." G K Chesterton
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Special Meeting
Date: 12/23/2016
Bible: Matthew 1:18-25, John 14:2-3
Length: 9 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Note- The poem quoted is -The House of Christmas- by G K Chesterton. Goggle it-----Transcript of the segment on going home by Dr. Liam Goligher---Its not strange to have a feeling of homesickness because we-re intended to long for another place and another home. Its part of the Christmas story that in the midst of the loneliness and emptiness often of our lives the Christmas story tells us how, -over- the cry of a collected people, the mountains would tremble- O Lord that you would look upon us- O lord that you would come down, is answered when the Shepherds announce the good news- that in David-s town there is a baby born.----Christ chose homelessness so that you and I could find a home that would last forever. In Christ God drew near, choosing to be born vulnerable, needing the care of a mother to hold him and feed him. Choosing to become a man who in his youth chose to be exploited- Chose to be betrayed- Chose the way of the cross.----Christmas reminds us of the harsh reality of God becoming flesh and making a home among us that he might give us a home that transcends all worlds. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go I will come again and take you to be with me where I am.

Mary, Did You Know?

Fri, 23 Dec 2016 15:53 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Mary, Did You Know? Subtitle: Hebrews Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - AM Date: 12/18/2016 Bible: Hebrews 1:10-12; Psalm 102 Length: 45 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcribed Extract- WHAT MARY REALLY HOLDS IN HER ARMS--Mary, you don-t know what you-ve got yet. But if you do get this, you won-t be surprised when the wind stops when he talks to it- when the waves calm immediately when he commands them. Nor will you be surprised when he speaks to dead men and they come alive. Nor will you be surprised when he creates something out of nothing and feeds multitudes.--Mary, did you know that your baby boy is the Lord of all Creation---Mary, did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations---Did you know that your baby boy is heaven-s perfect Lamb---This sleeping child you-re holding is the great I AM----I am the LORD, and I change not,- says Jesus. And that means for you, as we worship this Christmas time, that we are worshiping one who is true and fully God. -Very God of Very God.- We-re worshiping one who can be distinguished from us creatures, because he is the Creator. We-re worshiping one whose very being - as Almighty, as eternal and as unchangeable - strengthens our faith. Why- Because we look at what he has done in the past, according to the Scriptures, and we say to ourselves, -He hasn-t changed- His values are the same now as they were then. His love is the same now as it was then. His kindness is the same now as it was then.- -His love in times past, forbids me to think he-ll leave me at last in trouble to sink.- He will always be there. He will always be there, unchanging in his faithfulness, for his years have no end.[...]

A Well-Known Secret

Tue, 20 Dec 2016 01:18 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: A Well-Known Secret
Subtitle: Christmas
Speaker: Rev. Carroll Wynne
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday - PM
Date: 12/18/2016
Bible: Micah 4:2-5:5, Matthew 1:1-6
Length: 31 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Extract- FRIENDSHIP WITH THE PRINCE OF PEACE--Once we have understood and received the gift of the Prince of Peace, we shouldn-t stop there. This table of communion is where we celebrate salvation. Those are the elements of his broken body. But if that is all that we do, we are short-venting an opportunity to grow. You see the Prince of Peace is our peace. You don-t have a friendship that stops and is frozen in place from the first day that you met each other. That would be crazy. It grows. It matures. It comes into something so much larger. And your life is enriched as a result, and that is the same with the Prince of Peace. As we spend more time with him, that peace will start to filter into our lives in so many ways. It will trickle into and heal broken relationships with our family members and friends. It may dribble into our neighborhoods or workplaces, where relational irritants are as present as the nearby -idiots- we see daily - -idiots-, though, who are made in the image of God. We need to turn our thinking around. We need to be able to share this Person of Peace. You see, for some, peace needs to seep into our shattered dreams, yes, into our dreams. For you see, it is the Prince of Peace who has drawn us into his rule, to his community. So the brokenness of one person in a church, should be the brokenness of all of us. Dreams are hard when they are shattered.

The Sovereign Son

Thu, 15 Dec 2016 20:36 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: The Sovereign Son
Subtitle: Hebrews
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday - AM
Date: 12/11/2016
Bible: Hebrews 1:8-9; Psalm 45
Length: 42 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Transcribed Extract- His Throne of Majesty----Now it-s this reference to majesty then that leads us in v.6 to this statement in which the author of the Psalm, the Holy Spirit, addresses God. Do you see that- And in particular, he brings our attention to bear on what characterizes this figure about whom he is speaking. He says this, -The Divine Son,- if we can use the language that the writer to the Hebrews invites us to use about the one who is being described here, -about the Son, taking that, he says the Divine Son has a throne.- He has a throne. -Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.- -Your throne-- A throne is the seat of a king. And so what we discover, the very first thing we discover in this Psalm as we begin to unpack it together is, that, in this Psalm we see that the Divine Son reigns in majesty. He is the monarch over all things. The throne is the height of glory for a king. For this King to be named God places his throne above all creaturely existence. For his throne and for his title to be God means that his throne is higher than all the creatures, including the angels. -He is God over all forever blessed.- His is the majesty. His is the monarchy. And his kingdom is described as being forever and forever, an everlasting kingdom, an everlasting throne.

Gone Fishing

Tue, 13 Dec 2016 16:31 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Gone Fishing Subtitle: That You May Believe… Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - PM Date: 12/11/2016 Bible: John 20:30-21:14, 1 Corinthians 15:3-9, Length: 38 min. (64kbps) Overview: The Church Needs Us All--They-re not expecting to see him there. But John is a sensitive soul, John who is intuitive, John who is affectionate. John recognizes Jesus, -It is the Lord.- And Peter- Peter-s different from John. Peter-s just gung-ho. Peter-s out of the boat swimming to shore before John can take another breath. -It is the Lord,- John says, and in he goes, Peter. And then John gets out and goes along with him. And the others are all left in the boat. You know, the Christian community, the Christian church is made up of all kinds of people. Oh, there-s people like John, very perceptive, very intuitive, very empathetic, sympathetic. There-s Peter. Peter is just a dynamo of action. And then there-s the others. The ones who stay in the boat, because if they get out of the boat, they-ll lose the catch. If they don-t stay, all these fish that they have just caught are going to get away. So they stay in the boat, while the other two are running to Jesus, they stay in the boat and manage the weight and, slowly but surely, they get the boat to the shore where Jesus stands. You see, there-s a place for everybody in the body of Christ. There-s a place for all kinds and all types of people in the body of Christ. And most of us, most of us, for all of our lives just keep keeping on. We-ll do what we can. And God will use what we can do. In the bigger picture, God will use what we can do. We need the intuitive, spiritually minded John. We need the go-getting high powered people. But the church would not survive without the rest of [...]

Christmas Angels

Thu, 8 Dec 2016 02:05 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Christmas Angels Subtitle: Hebrews Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - AM Date: 12/4/2016 Bible: Hebrews 1:7-8; Numbers 22:22-35 Length: 40 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcribed Extract- Why Angels Go to Church--But did you know that the most regular attenders in church are the angels of God- Did you know that- They frequent the assemblies of God-s people. We find this, for example, in that rather odd chapter- It-s odd because we are not really quite sure what Paul has in mind, although I think I have the definitive explanation of it, which you-ll just have to wait for another ten years to find out. In 1 Corinthians, do you remember, where it talks about the women having their heads covered -because of the angels-- - whenever they are in church, -because of the angels-. Forget about the bit about the head covering. Women if you-ve got hair, you-re covered, you-re fine. Because it says in the text, that a woman-s hair is given to her instead of covering. Look it up. Back to the point. Because of the angels. Who are present, in church. I mean Paul writing to the Ephesians says that, -Through the church, the manifold wisdom of God is now made know to whom- To the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms. Did you know they come to church with you- That they are more anxious to hear the sermon than you are- They are seekers of truth. This is how Peter puts it, -Those who preach the good news to you by the Holy Spirit from heaven, things into which the angels long to look.- They are eager to learn more of this salvation, because you see, we see it far more clearly than they do. They have not sinned, therefore they have never been pardoned. And our experience of the grace of God, our experienc[...]

Beyond Doubt

Tue, 6 Dec 2016 11:03 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Beyond Doubt Subtitle: That You May Believe… Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - PM Date: 12/4/2016 Bible: John 20:26-29; John 11:16 Length: 36 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcribed Extract- Implications of Deity----Look at what-s said in v.28. -Thomas answered, -My Lord and my God.-- Do you understand the enormity of those words, for a Jew, for Thomas- Had he been thinking about this through the week- Had he taken on aboard their claim that Jesus was alive after his Passion- Had he been reflecting on those conversations back like we have in chapter 5 of John-s Gospel. -The Father has life in himself- he has granted the Son to have life in himself.- -People should honor the Son as they honor the Father.- He has spoken about the Father-s glory and his glory. He had said, -I and the Father are one.- -If you-ve seen me, you-ve seen the Father.- Was he thinking all this through- Is he now wondering, if what they said is true- if what they said is real- if Jesus is risen from the dead, he has demonstrated the omnipotence of the only God. He has demonstrated his Almightiness. He is the Almighty Lord. The only language that comes to him is language that he has obviously considered and contemplated in his mind as he has reflected on the events as they have unfolded and are unfolding before his eyes. -My Lord and my God------------This confession of Thomas-s is vital to the overall shape of the gospel. It turns our thoughts right back to the very beginning - in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was face-to-face with God in the beginning, and the Word was God-and the Word became flesh and dwelt amongst us.----------What was it Jesus did- He walked on water. He still[...]

The Rippling Effect

Sat, 3 Dec 2016 21:01 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: The Rippling Effect
Speaker: Dr. Jerry McFarland
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday - PM
Date: 11/27/2016
Bible: Jonah 1:1-16; Psalm 51
Length: 31 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Transcript of the Segment on on the Spiritually Hard of Hearing- It-s harder to hear spiritually. You begin to make your spiritual heart increasingly hard and insensitive to his voice. It-s like that little child who gets in the habit of going tone-deaf at the voice of his parents. Have you ever seen parents call that young child, -Stop right there- Come back here.- And they turn around and smile like, -I can-t hear you.- They can hear you but they keep walking away. It might be cute at first, but if it persists in life, it can be destructive, to not hear as well as you used to. I don-t need to give any further editorial commend on this issue than that which comes from God-s word itself- Hebrews 3. One of the more unsettling passages for me, because the writers of Hebrews is talking to believers in Jesus Christ. Listen to what he says, -Take care, brothers and sisters, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God-. that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.- That-s a frightening thought, to think that, not that I am being so rebellious, but I can get to a point where I can-t hear God as well. And I don-t even realize how insensitive my heart and how deaf my ears are. That-s a frightening place to be.

Greater Than Angels

Sat, 3 Dec 2016 20:54 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Greater Than Angels Subtitle: Hebrews Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - AM Date: 11/27/2016 Bible: Hebrews 1:4-9;Psalm 110 Length: 40 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the Segment on on Prophetic Time and Divine Context- David in the Spirit, or by means of the Holy Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, -The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand.- David, in other words, was under the influence of the Holy Spirit, like a man carried along by the tide of the Holy Spirit. And he was speaking by the Spirit, God-s words in that setting. Now this has led people, of course, in their understanding of prophetic speech in the Old Testament, to recognize a distinction between the prophetic setting of a text and, if you will, the divine context of a text. So the prophetic setting of a text is David is speaking or writing at a particular point in history. He was alive and well, and he was in a lyrical mood and the Holy Spirit had overtaken him and he is speaking words by the Spirit at a particular day. He could have told you it was before dinner on such and such a day of such and such a month in such and such a year. It happened to David at a particular point of time, about a thousand years before Christ. But the events that are captured in David-s words could very well take place in God-s time, which is no time, outside of time, in another realm altogether. And the early Christians, including the writer to the Hebrew, including the Lord Jesus in his use of Psalm 110, noted that throughout the Old Testament, particularly in the book of Psalms, but elsewhere as well, there are a series of conversations embedded, in whi[...]

A Grateful Heart

Thu, 24 Nov 2016 18:29 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: A Grateful Heart Subtitle: Thanksgiving Day Service Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Midweek Service Date: 11/24/2016 Bible: 1 Thessalonians 5:18; 2 Timothy 3:2-5 Length: 32 min. (64kbps) Overview: -Thanksgiving is the atheist-s nightmare.-----On Thankfulness amid Unfavorable Circumstances----Now that-s an easy thing to sing when things are going well, -non novis domini- Not unto us, O Lord, but unto thy name be the glory. But it is far more difficult to sing those words when things are going bad, when things are difficult. Paul-s writing to this church, you know, back in chapter 1, he says about these Christian people at Thessalonica, -You became imitators of us and of the Lord in spite of sever sufferings. You welcomed the message with joy, given by the Holy Spirit,- in spite of the fact that by receiving the message you would be persecuted. Paul is alluding there to the fact that part of the experience of the people of God is the experience of the thorns and the thistles, of the pains and the losses, and the crosses. There-s story of Daniel. You remember, some officials persuade the king, King Darius, that he should issue a decree that for thirty days, anyone who prayed to any other god other than to King Darius would be thrown into the lion-s den. How does Daniel respond in those difficult circumstances- Well, Daniel chapter 6 tells us. Three times a day he got down upon his knees and he prayed, giving thanks to the Lord. In other words, thanksgiving belongs to every department of our life, every season of life, every joy and sorrow cometh from above. And therefore we can recognize [...]

We Have Seen the Lord

Wed, 23 Nov 2016 12:47 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: We Have Seen the Lord Subtitle: That You May Believe… Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - PM Date: 11/20/2016 Bible: John 20:19-23; John 17:17-18 Length: 37 min. (64kbps) Overview: Segment transcript on How Jesus Must Now -Make Himself Known-----He did not, on his resurrection, return to his earthly, bodily existence. There is a difference. Had he returned to his earthly, bodily existence, he would have come to the door, knocked the door and asked to come in. But he has appeared to them. There is something different. There is a dimensional difference. There is something unusual that the writer, John, and those who were there as eye-witnesses, are struggling to get their heads around. There is something different. Something has changed. It-s still him but there-s something different. His earthly body has been raised from the dead, but it-s also been transformed. It has been--made suitable for eternal purposes. To use the language of the Apostle Paul in Philippians 3-21, it-s the -body of his glory-. The body of his glory, his glorified body. And it-s on the basis now of his glorified status, that he now has to make himself known to his people. He makes himself known to Mary, you remember, by calling her name - -Mary-- He makes himself known here, in this incident, by showing them his tell-tale wounds. He makes himself known-- to a bunch of disciples, a couple disciples, on their way from Jerusalem to Emmaus. As he walks with them by the way and gets to their place in Emmaus, and they sit down to eat food. And he makes himself known to them by breaking br[...]

Heir of All Things

Wed, 23 Nov 2016 07:23 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Heir of All Things Subtitle: Hebrews Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday Service Date: 11/20/2016 Bible: Hebrews 1:1-4; 1 Timothy 6:16 Length: 47 min. (64kbps) Overview: Segment transcript on Jesus as the Radiance of God-----In the Bible, glory is associated a lot with light. God is glorious. -He dwells in unapproachable light.- God is brilliant light. And what this text is saying is that God, who is light, projects light. God is glorious and his glory is radiant. God is light and that light shines. And what the author is saying is, -God in himself is light but the shining of the light is the Son-, -S-O- N, the Son of God-. And what he is arguing here is this- the Father is the source of light- the Son, we-re told, is light in himself- but you cannot separate the light from the shining, from the out- shining. You can-t do it. You can say, -Well, I-m going to switch off the light and still have the out-shining. I-ll switch off the torch -flashlight-, but I-ll still have the beam.- You can-t do that. You go and experiment tonight. It won-t work. Because light shines. And so what the illustration is teaching us is this - that though you can distinguish between the light and the shining, they are one. That-s what it is saying. The light and the shining are one. -You notice that he is not saying that the Son reflects the glory of God- he-s not saying the Son is illuminated by the glory of God like -by- a spotlight. No, no. He is the shining forth of the glory of God.- -If you think about the radiance, the out-shining, it invariably mak[...]

How Does It Spread?

Sat, 19 Nov 2016 07:19 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: How Does It Spread? Speaker: Philip Kirkland Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - PM Date: 11/13/2016 Bible: Romans 15:18-24; Isaiah 6 Length: 47 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the Segment on Isaiah-s Calling---Isaiah 6 -- this is the text that was actually sung this evening, where God says, -Who will go for me- Who will I sent-- and Isaiah says, -Here am I, send me-- and all of us say together, -Go, Isaiah- Do it-- Right- But have you ever read the verses that follow- Look with me at Isaiah 6-8. -Here am I, send me-- -And he said, -Go, this is your message. This is what I want you to do, Isaiah. This is your task. Go, and say to this people, -Keep on hearing, but do not understand- keep on seeing, but do not perceive. Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes- lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.-- And you would say, -What-- And we can-t get into the theology of what-s going on here and why God would say that, but it-s very clear that the only way in which Isaiah-s mission is going to be successful, is if God actually does a miracle and goes before him and opens up those ears, and opens up those eyes. And he says he isn-t going to do it right now in this moment. But we know that he does. You know, Isaiah had the message. We love Isaiah-s prophecies, because it-s in Isaiah that we see so many beautiful things about the coming Messiah. If we want to see a clear -pointing to Christ- in the Old Testament, we migh[...]

(64kbps) Overview: Transcript segment on Undisputed Facts- -----Now we do have a set of facts that are not disputed, neither by God nor by Jonah. First, they both agree, rightly, that Nineveh is a wicked place with wicked people. Second, the fact that God is mighty enough to save is not disputed. Jonah knows that. He has seen that toward Israel. And he has experienced that personally on a number of levels, including his salvation from the mouth of the great fish. And third, both God and Jonah know that God has the compassion to save. Jonah-s confession about this in v. 2 is a beautiful one, --you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster.- But his next confession in v. 3 is an ugly one. This beautiful confession of worship of the character of God becomes a root of complaint and condemnation. -O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.- Jonah wants God to be quicker to anger slower to love and compassion toward the Ninevites. So we have a God of compassion and a prophet of condemnation and anger. In v. 1 we read, that God-s compassion on the Ninevites -displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.- More literally, we could translate the Hebrew as, -It made him boiling mad.- and to him it, -what God had done- was a great evil. -Note- that is an alternate translatio[...]

The Empty Tomb

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 03:16 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: The Empty Tomb Subtitle: That You May Believe… Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - PM Date: 11/6/2016 Bible: John 20:1-20; 1 Corinthians 15:14-19 Length: 36 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the segment on the Voice of Jesus- ----They were kept from recognizing him, because he is teaching them something. Both in the story of the Emmaus walk and here in the encounter with Mary, how does she recognize him- Now you notice. She recognizes Jesus when he speaks to her, when his voice is heard. And the theological implication of that is that from this point onward, that is, in fact, how people will come to recognize Jesus. In John 3 -John 10-3-, for example, Jesus uses the image of himself as the Great Shepherd, and he says this, -The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.- Jesus is in the business of coming to individual people, as he called her name, -Mary-- And she recognized him when he called her name. Jesus is looking out for people, his people, searching them out, revealing himself to them, calling them to himself by name, individually, touching their hearts, getting their attention, drawing them to himself. That-s the work Jesus is doing today. That-s how he works and operates today. In John 10-14 there-s another verse, -I am the Good Shepherd and I know my own and my own know me.- They know me when I speak their name- when I call them, they recognize my voice. They won-t follow another shepherd- they wi[...]

One Who is Son

Wed, 9 Nov 2016 02:39 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: One Who is Son Subtitle: Hebrews Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - AM Date: 11/6/2016 Bible: Hebrews 1:1-3; John 3:31-34 Length: 41 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcripted segment on Jesus Growing into the Human Person He Was--- So all the mysteries of the divine will were known to the Son as he takes on our humanity. It-s a wonderful picture, actually, as he takes on our humanity, his human nature, of course, in the mother-s womb, knows nothing. You know, in the Middle Ages, they had- there was a period in the Middle Ages- there was one period where religious drawing, art, would draw the Son, paint the Son, in the womb of his mother Mary, looking like a grown man. It was just trying to communicate something of his eternal knowledge and so on. It was intended to communicate that idea. But of course, he wasn-t. He was a baby-thing. When he was born, he was just a little baby. He learned at the same stages we do. Perhaps, as time went on, it accelerated. We know that by the time he was twelve, we-re told in Luke 2, that -the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.- He was drawing, he is drawing from the knowledge that he has as the eternal Son of God, even in his humanity. By the age of twelve, he is able to say to the doctors of theology in Jerusalem, as he-s debating with them, as a twelve year old boy, arguing theology with them. He is able, even at that point, to know that he is the Son of the Father. So tha[...]

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: The Man of God and the Word of God Speaker: Dr. Richard D. Phillips Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - AM Date: 10/30/2016 Bible: 1 Kings 13:1-22; Deuteronomy 13:1-5 Length: 45 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the segment on moral tragedy of our generation-----Now there is and has been for quite a while increasing evidence that the very concern I-ve just raised is increasingly urgent among Bible-believing Christians, supposedly Bible-believing Christians, supposedly evangelical Christians, not sure what those words mean in the popular culture anymore.----Because of this Bible preaching is down. I-ve often said if you look at the tragedy, the moral tragedy of our generation the spiritual collapse of our generation, the institution that has most failed America is not the ACLU, it is not the Supreme Court, it-s the evangelical church that will not preach the word of God. Why- Because they want success. The ABC-s of church success, Attendance, Buildings, and Cash. They are all good and I want all of them. But I want them as byproducts. And you can get them all in illegitimate ways and we have failed our generation by refusing to teach the Scriptures and to allow the power of God.----I remember Dr. Boice saying, -Rick, what we save them with we save them to- If we save them with something other than the word of God, we save them to someone other than the God of the word-. We must believe in the sufficiency and the power [...]

Sola Gratia: By Grace Alone

Fri, 4 Nov 2016 17:54 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Sola Gratia: By Grace Alone Speaker: Dr. Jeffrey Jue Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - PM Date: 10/30/2016 Bible: Ephesians 2:1-10; Romans 4:22-25 Length: 36 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the segment on Luther-s Realization of Grace Alone-----But in Luther-s own biography, he described that it is really 1519 that he seized upon the truth of the gospel as taught in Scripture. You see, Luther was raised in that medieval tradition. He was taught that how you come to salvation is through the Church and the Church-s sacraments. To constantly come to the church and avail yourself of these sacraments that would make you more and more righteous. And so Luther was constantly going to confess his sins and do penance. He would constantly attend the Mass in the medieval Roman Catholic church, devoting himself diligently to that system in hopes of his salvation, so much so that his confessor would at times tell him, -Go away. You are coming too many times. You don-t need to come that often.- You see Luther was taught in that medieval system, -Do your best and God will not deny you.- But he had a tender conscience, in which he struggled with that because he wrestled with the question, -Well, what-s my best- How do I know that I-ve done enough-- And it was Luther-s own description of how he came upon the study of Scripture that revealed to him that salvation was not what he was working toward, but w[...]

The Grammar of God

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 21:04 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: The Grammar of God
Subtitle: Hebrews
Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher
Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Event: Sunday - AM
Date: 10/23/2016
Bible: Hebrews 1:1-3; 1 Peter 1:10-12
Length: 45 min. (64kbps)

Overview: Transcripts on the segment of God Speaking----The writer here comes out of the blue, as it were. Having used this word -God- that refers to this Being who is wrapped in mystery, who is an enigma to us, who is a God beyond all telling, a God beyond all conceiving - he none the less says about this God that this God has done something in relation to us. This God has spoken. He has spoken- In enormous kindness, the Blessed Trinity has determined to share with creatures, such as we are, his life of communication and communion. This unfathomable God has undertaken to reveal himself to finite humanity in such a way as to create and sustain and perfect an intelligent, saving, loving relationship with himself. I want to break that down and put it in simple terms. The purpose of God-s self-revelation, the purpose of God-s self-expression, the purpose of God-s self-communication is so that he can make friends with you. He has spoken. God has--spoken.

(64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the segment on on Corinth---Paul is writing, of course, to a particular church, at a particular time in history and yet there are so many elements of what it was like to live in Corinth in the first century that are reflected in our society today. If you think of a society that was as obsessed with sex as ours is, so the church in Corinth was obsessed with sex, in every shape, form that you can possibly imagine. Although you shouldn-t imagine it in church this evening. It was a pluralistic society. It was a society in which there were multiple gods and goddesses. It was kind of a multi-variety pack of gods and goddesses there in Corinth. It was also, and it is interesting that these things often go hand in hand, it was also a rational, rationalistic society in which reason was held up and applauded as the way to resolve questions. You had reason on the one hand and you had superstition on the other. Similarly, we have these things in our society today. And it was a society in which the early Christian movement, just as it is starting out, finds itself misrepresented, mocked, rejected. By the Jewish population, a stumbling block. And to the sophi[...]

Seeing is Believing

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 06:35 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Seeing is Believing Subtitle: That You May Believe… Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - PM Date: 10/16/2016 Bible: John 20:1-32;1 Peter 1:3 Length: 36 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the segment on Restoration of the Losses of Eden--There-s something moving. Did you notice, this is, this is the very first encounter there is, in the New Testament, with the risen Jesus. Mary Magdalene gets to meet Jesus before -, in his risen state, before Peter and John do, before anybody else does. And she wasn-t important. She wasn't one of the leading lights. We might have expected it, if it was Mary the mother of our Lord. Meeting Jesus after the Resurrection, we might have expected that, although that doesn-t happen, maybe because God in his providence, who overrides history, knew that she was going to be made too much of. No, it-s Mary Magdalene. And Mary Magdalene, if you hadn-t noticed is a woman. And the word and witness of a woman is not admissible as evidence in law, either Jewish law or Roman law, at that time. These were patriarchal societies. Women were oppressed. Women were disregarded. Women were side-lined. Women were put into their place, their little slot. It was a result of the Fall. And yet here is the beginning of Jesus- purpose, to restore what had been lost in Eden, by man[...]

The Divine Speaker

Tue, 18 Oct 2016 20:42 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: The Divine Speaker Subtitle: Hebrews Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - AM Date: 10/16/2016 Bible: Hebrews 1:1-2; Zechariah 3 Length: 45 min. (64kbps) Overview: Sermon transcript segment on The Name of the Lord-----When eventually the children of Israel would reach the Promised Land, in Deuteronomy, God says, -When you get there, and when eventually you have rest from all of your enemies, I want you to build a place where you can gather to worship. And that place that the LORD your God shall choose for you is the place where I will make my name dwell. And you-ll worship me there.- So fast forward to the time of King Solomon. King David has been along. King David has defeated the enemies. There-s peace in the land. Solomon says, -I intend to build a house for the name of the LORD my God.- Build a house for the name. And that place will be called, -The house for my Name-, as God said. Solomon builds the temple. And the one who does not dwell in the heavens or the heaven of heavens dwells on the earth. And that temple becomes the place where he says, -That is where my name is.- So the name of the LORD is a created thing. It-s a created mental entity. It-s a created category in order to communicate something of the being of God. The being of God can be thought lik[...]

(64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the Segment on -It is finished----Having finished his mission, the mission that he, within the Trinity, had decided before the foundation of the world- that in the Trinity there is this great decision that the Son will come into the world, will assume our humanity, will become a second and last Adam, will come into the world and will be born of a woman and made under the law, would come and act within a covenant or works relationship with his Father as a human being and as a creature. And him, having now come into the world, him now having taken on our flesh, him now having overcome Satan by obedience instead of disobedience, him having kept the word of God, him having been obedient and righteous through all his dealings, now having come to this point, having finished that work, having stood in on our behalf, having taken our place, having obeyed where we disobeyed, and him now having shed blood for us on the cross as he is made a sacrifice for our sins - now he cries, -Finished-- -Done-- There is nothing needing to be added to this work. God Has Spoken

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 05:09 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: God Has Spoken Subtitle: Hebrews Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - AM Date: 10/9/2016 Bible: Hebrews 1:1; John 17:2-3 Length: 50 min. (64kbps) Overview: This Summer-s Great Trinitarian Debate----Earlier this summer, back in June, I wrote one very long blog post, that was divided into two and was put out there, which caused some reaction. The last I counted 250 blogs or comments or posts followed that particular post. And it was about the Trinity. You can just Google it for yourself and find out what it was all about. One of the things I learned from that Great Trinitarian Debate of 2016 is that evangelical people cannot agree about who God is. Now that is not to say that the churches cannot agree. In fact, it is the most agreed-about thing in all of Christian history. And if you look up the statements of faith of the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran church, the Christian Reformed churches, Presbyterian churches, even Reformed Baptist churches, you will unanimity, harmony and agreement about who God is. We have our great creeds of our faith. We have the great confessions of our church and they are all united in what we believe about God. But apparently evangelicals are not agreed on who God is and it-s [...]

Crucified

Fri, 7 Oct 2016 13:07 GMT

A new MP3 sermon from 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details: Title: Crucified Subtitle: That You May Believe… Speaker: Dr. Liam Goligher Broadcaster: 10th - Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) Event: Sunday - PM Date: 10/2/2016 Bible: John 19:16-27; John 12:31-33 Length: 31 min. (64kbps) Overview: Transcript of the segment on the Soldiers Gambling-----It wasn-t unusual for the soldiers to commandeer the clothing and effects of a crucified or executed man. These would have included an outer garment, an undergarment, a loincloth, a belt, sandals. And the soldiers on duty, apparently four of them that day, cast lots to determine which item belonged to which soldier. In the process of dividing up the stuff, they came across this coat, this undergarment, which instead of being made of different pieces of cloth and sewn together, had been woven in one piece from top to the bottom without a seam. That made it very valuable. Josephus, the Jewish historian, tells us that the high priest-s coat, same word, was of this type, woven in one piece. It could be that John recognized that there was some importance to that. And that-s why he reports this fact, that takes place. He says, -That may be significant,- because he has already emphasized or introduced us to the idea that Jesus was the high priest who offers the sacri[...]
