Survey Shows 3 of 4 Companies Suffer Data Loss

Wed, 06 Jul 2011 03:06:00 +0000

Research released this week by the Ponemon Institute reveals that more than three out of four organizations surveyed have experienced some kind of data loss within the last year. Some of the data loss occurred because of negligence on the part of an employee or a technical glitch, but an increasing percentage of the data breaches were the result of malicious criminal activity, underscoring the need for increased attention to data loss prevention (DLP) security. The survey conducted by the Ponemon Institute queried 2,400 IT security professionals, 77% of whom report some kind of data loss incident. Check Point Software Technologies released the survey along with information on DLP best practices. The survey showed that the leading causes of data loss were, in order, lost or stolen equipment, such as a laptop or a USB drive; network attacks; insecure mobile devices; activity on Web 2.0 sites; file sharing applications; and accidentally sending emails to an unintended recipient.“Criminal data breaches or thefts are a greater percentage of breaches than was the case in the past,” says Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute. “It could be a hacker or a malicious insider, someone for whom their mission in life is to steal data or damage it.”Data losses related to negligence by employees is preventable, says Ponemon. Yet the survey shows that 49% of respondents believe their employees have little or no awareness about data security, governance requirements or corporate security policies.“Despite all the hoopla about security vulnerabilities and [reports] about cyberattacks on the rise ... it just seems like companies in general are complacent about their security posture until they have a big problem,” he says.To increase security, Check Point suggested several best practices. For example, companies and their employees should understand their organization’s security needs; classify sensitive data; align security policies with business needs; secure data throughout its life cycle; and emphasize user awareness of security risks. Check Point also advises companies to think beyond security compliance regulations such as Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Sarbanes Oxley, and develop DLP practices that are “protecting data beyond what’s required.”The survey also tracked what kind of data has been lost in breaches: customer data such as credit card or Social Security numbers, 52%; intellectual property, 33%; employee personal information, 31%; and corporate plans, 16%.“The moral of the story is that organizations can do a better job of ensuring that they have a strong security posture,” says Ponemon. “You get a new-found religion when you’re on the front page of the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal because of a data breach or a cyber attack that you failed to detect quickly.”Read more: http://www.networkcomputing.com/data-protection/230500223[...]

EMC Helps Honda France Manufacturing Transform Its Data Protection

Thu, 26 Aug 2010 09:43:00 +0000

Avamar Disk-based Backup Solution Replaces Legacy Tape Infrastructure, Yielding Super-Fast Backups and Recoveries, Cost Savings and Reduced Capacity Requirements HOPKINTON, Mass., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced that Honda France Manufacturing has redesigned its data protection infrastructure, leveraging EMC® and VMware® solutions deployed in combination with EMC Avamar® deduplication backup and recovery software. By protecting its virtualized server environment with Avamar, the Orleans, France-based manufacturer has achieved a broad spectrum of efficiencies and can now rapidly and reliably recover both its data and systems. As one of Europe's leading manufacturers of power products, Honda France Manufacturing assembles over two hundred thousand goods per year for distribution throughout the European market. In an increasingly competitive market, they rely heavily on their IT systems to successfully drive their highly streamlined "just-in-time" manufacturing processes, as well as all associated operational, financial and administrative functions. Several years ago, the company began a comprehensive project to upgrade its IT systems that included EMC and VMware solutions. But their existing backup system, which consisted of tape infrastructure and Symantec NetBackup, was not keeping pace. "Our legacy backup process was incredibly slow," said Benoit Perrussel, systems network manager for Honda France Manufacturing. "Just backing up the data held on the file server could take twelve hours. With that kind of performance, we were only able to complete a full system backup once a week. We needed to make a change and began a search for a new solution." Today, Honda France Manufacturing's high performance data protection infrastructure is a model of excellence that closely mirrors its own commitment to quality in manufacturing. "With EMC Avamar, the same file server that used to take twelve hours to backup now takes just one hour to backup," says Perrussel. "In addition, Avamar's VMware protection capabilities are truly exceptional." Perrussel also cites excellent recovery speeds, reduced management and administration time, the ability to reliably perform full backups every day, and cost savings due to reduced storage capacity requirements as additional advantages gained with Avamar. "I can recommend EMC Avamar because Honda France Manufacturing has received outstanding benefits and found the product extremely easy to implement and use," notes Perrussel. "With EMC's help, our redesigned data protection system is light years ahead of our legacy system, and we're comfortable that our systems, applications and data are protected and easily restorable in virtually any circumstance." It can manage your emails and contacts like managing files; you can drag-&-drop or automatically backup your Outlook / Outlook Express / Windows Mail and contacts in real-time or scheduled times. Novosoft releases a new version of a popular data backup utility Handy Backup, now with differential backup capability.

Alliance, Ohio, January 13, 2010 – Novosoft, one of the leading providers of backup solutions for Windows computers and Windows Server-based networks, today announced the release of a new version of their flagship product Handy Backup. Handy Backup 6.5 features a powerful differential backup engine and multiple improvements in data indexing algorithms, optimized for use with large amounts of data.

"It wasn't until we built the first beta that we realized what a powerful tool for enterprise backup Handy Backup becomes," said Alexander Prichalov, head of Novosoft development department. Differential backup is a technology based on binary comparison of data with existing backup, where only new files and changes on modified files are processed. It greatly saves time and drive space required to store backups and enables enterprises to achieve near continuous protection of business data at minimal costs.

"Business data retention policies require backups to be regular and automatic," said Mr. Prichalov. "We are excited to come up with an effective solution and strengthen Handy Backup's positions among professional backup software."

Novosoft Announces Marketing Strategy for Handy Backup for Android

Thu, 19 Nov 2009 08:56:00 +0000

Novosoft, one of the leading providers of data backup solutions worldwide, today announced the intention to use Handy Backup for Android, their data backup tool for Android-powered phones, to promote Novosoft Remote Backup Service.

Alliance, Ohio, November 17, 2009 – Novosoft, an international IT-consulting and software development company, announced today that the upcoming version Handy Backup for Android will be bundled with Novosoft Remote Backup Service.

"Handy Backup for Android will remain free for all users of Android phones," said Alexander Prichalov, head of Novosoft Development Department. "However, we are planning to add features integrated with third-party services. For example, the upcoming release will support backing up to FTP servers, but it will be available only for customers of our Remote Backup Service."

The strategy of providing free or low cost software with paid options is not new for Novosoft. Handy Backup for PC is marketed in exactly the same way: its core functionality can be extended with paid plug-ins of two types, one for extracting data to back up (files-based, drive-based and database backup plug-ins) and another for controlling storage and processing options.
"We've taken great care to develop the same powerful architecture that we have in a desktop version," said Mr. Prichalov. "Further development of Handy Backup for Android will be focused on creation of plug-ins for data selection and storage, and FTP backup is the first of them. In a short time, we will revise pricing strategy of our Remote Backup Service, and come up with a solution that will be cost-effective for most Android users. The release of the new version is planned for the end of November."

The first beta of Handy Backup for Android was introduced by Novosoft in March, 2009. It was an extension to a desktop version of Handy Backup that allowed users to back up their phones to PC on the client-server model, controlled by PC. In the beginning of November the company released a standalone backup application for Android-based smartphones. At present, it is available on the Android Market and can be downloaded free of charge.

Novosoft, one of the leading providers of backup solutions worldwide, announces Handy Backup for Android, a data backup and restore utility for Android-based phones.

Alliance, Ohio, November 3, 2009 – Novosoft, an international software development and IT-consulting company, today announced the release of a lite version of Handy Backup™, a data backup tool for Android-powered mobile devices.

"We started working on compatibility with Android in early spring of this year," said Alexander Prichalov, head of Novosoft Product Department. "The first beta came out in March, and it was a client software that allowed a PC version of Handy Backup access and back up phone's data. After collecting user feedback, we saw a huge demand for a standalone Android backup tool, so we immediately started working to come up with a solution."

By creating a portable version of Handy Backup, Novosoft provides owners of Android-based smartphones with an opportunity to back up their data independently of Google services. The current release supports backing up SMS messages, contacts, call logs and SD card data. Contacts are saved in VCard format, so they can be later imported to Outlook or other messaging software.

"While the application may look simple at the first sight, we actually developed the same architecture that we have in desktop version of Handy Backup," said Mr. Prichalov. "Now it will be easy for us to extend the functionality with support for more data, various Android applications, capability to back up to network and FTP locations, and much more – just the way you can back up your PC with Handy Backup."

Handy Backup for Android is free of charge and can be downloaded directly on your phone from the Android Market.

Backup Rotation Schedule Basics

Mon, 13 Jul 2009 10:50:00 +0000

Backup rotation schedule is an essential basis of the whole backup strategy especially concerning corporate data backup and recovery used by enterprises. It is widely known that having only one copy of important information is asking for trouble. You have to keep multiple copies and one of them in secure off-site storage. Backup schedule is usually using a combination of partial backups interspersed with full backups to reduce backup time and capacity usage.

Most known and simple partial backup method is differential backup which allows saving all data changes made since last full backup. Due to backup strategy it takes more storage capacity, but is much faster to restore backed up information if it is necessary. Incremental backup is a little bit more complicated method allows backing up changes made since last incremental backup instead of full. This method helps to reduce storage capacities used to keep backup files, but process of backed up data restoration is relatively slow.

Top backup rotation schedules used for tape backup are mostly Grandfather-Father-Son (GFS) and Tower of Hanoi. GFS is based on using three sets or generations of tapes. Monthly full backup is grandfather, weekly full backup is father and a son set for partial everyday backups. Grandfather tapes are stored off-site while “younger” generations stay in backup rotation. Tower of Hanoi is based on mathematic puzzle of the same name and provides an ability to increase generations’ depth.

No matter which backup rotation schedule you will select according your corporate data backup strategy. The most important requirement is to have 24/7 access to your backups, though it is provided by every quality remote backup service.

Remote data backup planning issues

Mon, 29 Jun 2009 10:49:00 +0000

Remote data backup requires careful preparation and planning stage before you can be sure that performance will be adequate. Understanding of how much data you need to backup in a typical evening is the first important issue to be considered when planning remote backup strategy. When you know approximate data level to backup daily it’s time to select remote backup service which fits your budget and offering an adequate bandwidth.

Another factor gaining importance for remote data backup is data deduplication or intelligent compression as it also called. Typical remote backup may create many copies of the same file. Data deduplication used to avoid creating redundant information. It only makes one reserve copy of the file and provides pointers to other file iterations. So if you have 100 copies of 1 MB file, ordinary backup will use 100 MB of storage for them, while data deduplication need storage for 1 MB file and references for additional copies. 1 MB instead of 100 MB is a difference which makes reasonable enough to use only data deduplication supporting remote data backup.

The third issue with planning remote data backup strategy is possibility of connection failure. Business impact of link problem must be identified to make plans for minimization negative effects. Temporary connection problems must be corrected by repeat of remote backup attempt several hours later when the connection will return.

Backup phone

Thu, 04 Jun 2009 11:01:00 +0000

How would you feel if the entire address book, all messages and multimedia files on your mobile phone were gone? In most cases that would be a real disaster – unless you backup mobile data regularly. Today's life reveals such a fast growth of the number of various gadgets and mobile technologies that utilities for them can't keep in step with their development. That's why the matter of mobile backup receives so much attention: it provides almost endless prospects for both hardware and software manufacturers.
Unfortunately, different manufacturers choose different platforms for their mobile devices, and there can't be an ultimate mobile backup software solving all needs at once. The good news is that solutions for specific platforms, e.g. Windows Mobile or Android, are widely available and mobile backup tools for them can be found easily.

Backup Registry

Wed, 27 May 2009 08:07:00 +0000

It is important to regularly back up Windows registry, as it contains all options and preferences of software and hardware installed on your PC. If you have a backup of registry, you can always feel safe about the operation of your system: even if something goes wrong, you will be always able to restore settings of all devices and your favorite applications that you've tweaked to perfection.

When choosing a backup software capable of registry backup, make sure that it allows working with individual registry keys. All configuration options are logically split into several sections: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER and other, each storing data about different PC settings. By including different keys into different backup plans, you can establish a really flexible and reliable backup strategy.

Backup Software: The Engine That Drives Security

Author: Daniel M.Dugal

You need to look out for business when business works online. There are generally a different set of rules on the web and, for the most part, the stakes are a lot higher in the www. world of business.

Once you understand that reality, youll see that you need someone in your corner on the web, that going it alone is really a shaky proposition that can cause you more trouble than its worth. You need data security experts that know what theyre doing. You need data protection experts that have a good reputation and the kind of customer loyalty that tell you right away that they know all about what theyre doing .

Theres a checklist. And here are some of the bigger points on it.

Reputation. If the place that youre looking at his a great affiliate program, chances are theyve been able to impress and are doing at least some things right. Take a look at their site and ask around. The word on good reputations travels too.

Online Backup Software. This is absolutely critical. Remember that you would never even think about buying a car without checking under the hood. Well, thats the same for any online backup services that you might want to use. You need to look for several features that make the software great, and one of these is the right Remote File Access.

The software is extremely important and thats just why you need to understand what youre looking at. The better the software the better you chances of being able to get all of your information back after some kind of serious breech.

And the best in Remote File Access is an important part of that. This is the feature that allows you to get the information that youve lost back as long as you try from a computer with Internet access. Of course there are other options that youll want to have like fast efficient backups and an easy system restore feature. Remember that the online backup software is a lot like the engine that drives your data security. Without the right kind, you can lose all of your mission critical data for good.

Author: D FraserHaving an up to date backup of important photos, files and other data from your computer at home or office is something everyone should have, how ever very few do. How Come? Well at first I thought it might be because no one knew how or that they should do it. How ever that wasn't the case, the answer seems to be that most people just assume a data loss problem or PC failure won't happen to them, that is until it's to late.In this brief article I'm going to look at computer back storage options and backup software and solutions. We'll discuss the different types of storage you can use to store a backup and the different methods you can create the backup file(s).Don't Spend a Lot of Money on Fancy GadgetsIt's the trap of technology shopping, the huge list of features that are compared from product to product. The sad thing is we rarely need all those features, but we end up buying it anyways. What do we do that? Most of the time our eyes glaze over and think how great it would be to have this feature and that without even thinking if we need them or not. Take my advice and just buy something simple to get the backup job done, you don't need bells and whistles to protect your files and photos. When it comes to computer backup storage keep it simple. Consider using a USB jump drive or just dvd's. I'd suggest staying away from second hard drives, tape backups and other high tech alternatives.Simple Software will DoSo storing the backup your create is one step, but creating that backup is another. You can do something as simple as zip up all your files using the windows compression utility and just burn that to a DVD. How ever software can make the process a lot cleaner.Easy to use PC applications like Acronis True image make the backup process a lot easier then doing it manually. Programs like this are automatically integrated to store a backup on a USB drive or even transfer it off site via FTP. Using the backup software is as simple as selecting what files and folders you want backed up and the software takes care of the rest until you want to add new files or folders. The important point is don't get pulled down with a feature rich piece of software. All you need is point and click backup functionality. Anything more then that will risk you not doing your job which is setting up the backup software to run frequently so your files are safe.Back it all Up OnlineOne option for computer backup storage and software that is becoming very popular are online backup services. Online Backup and the Consequences of Data Loss For Business

Tue, 28 Oct 2008 07:51:00 +0000

Author: By Simon ZimmoOnline backup, why is it so crucial? Most companies, business corporations and organisations nowadays are totally dependent on their computer data; and the value of that data is not easy to cost. However, the cost of a data loss to any business is very significant, not only in the man hours that it would take to recover it, if recovery were possible; but also financially. What price can be put on lost invoices for goods and services, records of monies owed to the company and lost details of every customer and supplier. Add to that the records stored of every product a company may stock, the quantities on stock, the amount on order, the supplier of that product and the cost and selling prices. How much would it cost your company to manually reinstate that lot if your data was lost? Online backup is the most cost effective way to prevent against data loss. Just to emphasise how vulnerable your data is, how many times recently have you read in local newspapers about businesses being broken into and computers stolen. Apparently there were over 20,000 computers stolen last year. What happened to the companies who were affected by that? How many closed their doors forever, how many gave up shortly after; total data loss is as disastrous as that. If only they had chosen online backup. Then there was the even bigger list of companies who suffered total hard disc failure, had viruses, fires on the premises and flood damage. So how do you back up your records, disc, tape; and how often do you back them up; religiously every night, or when you remember? The beauty of online backup is it saves your data as you write it. If you backed up your data the night before, how much information has been input if your hard drive fails at 4.00 pm? How much crucial information and how many total man hours of work will have been lost during that period? Data loss can happen to organisations even with good backup protection; but will all items be on the tape or disc, such as contacts, email messages and other important items perhaps stored in folders in Exchange, Outlook, Domino and GroupWise. They would if you were using remote backup and elected to back them up as part of your online data backup. Who do you call if you back data up yourself to tapes etc and you can not restore your data; a very expensive IT expert? Customer service and assistance with data restoration, comes free with all good online data backup companies. On line backup companies offer the most reliable and cost-effective solution for bringing your business back online, in the event of any data loss or disaster scenario. So, I hope that I have managed to emphasise the importance of online back up; and how critical it is in this computer age, to every business and organisation, from large conglomerates down to the one man business. You will be very fortunate if one day disaster does not strike your data system and if you are not fully protected by online backup, why not look into it now before it is too late. How To Do Data Recovery, Data Security, Data Backup The Right Way

Wed, 15 Oct 2008 06:04:00 +0000

Author: Jon ArnoldOne of the most frightening things that can happen to a person is to lose the data off of their hard drive. Many of us store personal and business information on our computers. The thought of losing data due to a crashed or failed hard drive or perhaps a breach of data security sends chills down the spine of every grown man and woman. Once you except that you did not back up your data you need begin the data recovery process. What exactly are your data recovery options once your hard drive crashes? First of all, stop using the computer immediately. It is not suggested that you run any data recovery software that came with your computer as this software can overwrite the original files. The next step is to allow a hard disk recovery company to restore your pertinent files. Contact a reputable company immediately. There are a few companies who come right to your home, but at-home data recovery computer services charge more. Certain computer files, such as DWG files (a complex graphics file format), require a specialist in order to be recovered. If there is damage to the hard drive you may not be able to recover your files. A hard drive crashing is an instance where data recovery is possible. If your data security is breached you may never recover what is stolen. The best way to avoid compromised data security is to put safeguards in place. A few data security measures are encryption, antivirus and firewall protection. Data security such as encryption translates data into a secret code. To read an encrypted file you must have access to the key or password that enables you to decrypt it. There are many software programs and services that provide data encryption services depending on your data security needs. Additional data security measures such as antivirus and firewall protection provide further data protection. Some software programs have the ability to provide both antivirus and firewall protection for overall data security. One way to avoid the mess of data recovery is to perform regular backups. Basic computer maintenance includes full and incremental backups. It is recommended that you perform a full backup once a week. An incremental backup is a backup that backs up only the files modified since the last backup and depending on your needs you can schedule this to run every day. It’s also beneficial if you have a copy of your data offsite. When you need to access this data you can either open the offsite data program and run it, or log on via the web to access your data. You will want to check with your service provider how to perform data recovery if needed.Data recovery either from a crashed hard drive or lost through compromised data security can be a frustrating and devastating experience. The best situation is to avoid the loss of data all together. With regular computer backups and data security measures in place your computer data will remain where it needs to be, on your hard drive and easily accessible. Some people balk at the cost of protecting their data, as well as the time involved in doing secure backups. But what they fail to consider is the cost of their lost personal and productivity time that is spent trying to recover data that could be recovered in literally MINUTES if they had properly safe-guarded the data in the first place! If your computer data files are the lifeblood of your business and/or personal life, the time and money involved in protecting that data adequately and properly cannot be determined by a dollar [...]

Remote Data Backup

Tue, 30 Sep 2008 09:01:00 +0000

Unlike regular data backup software, Remote Data Backup doesn't send backups to media attached to the computer it is backing up. Instead, Remote Backup uses remote methods such as normal telephone lines or network connections to send the backup to another computer. Fully automated, it typically sends the backup at night so the computers aren't being used. Backups are becoming more and more vital as business depend more upon computers and the data they store. Night after night, many businesses takes vast risks and are not even aware of it.Other backup software usually misses or improperly completes essential steps that Remote Data Backup is perfect for. This is especially true with non-automated backup systems, where a company employee is responsible for performing backups. Sometimes the person is occupied with other work, the computer is in use at the scheduled backup time, or the person just forgets. Whatever the reason, most businesses do not follow their backup schedule. But with a Remote Backup system, backups are automatically completed when the computer is not in use, usually at night or some other low usage period, so you'll never be caught off guard without a recent backup. Most data backup software is installed with a list of files for which duplicates need to be made, generally reflecting the computer's memory when the software was installed. These updates therefore miss many important files, including files that were started after the software was first used. To make matters worse, most companies do not regularly reset their backup software to ensure that all necessary files are being protected each time.Remote Data Backup will help solve this issue by reevaluating non-stop your computer system, adding new files to the backup as necessary. Copies of files that are redundant are stored using a very sophiscated version control system that is not available in most of the other types of backup software. This fact is too important to dismiss.Redundancy is a necessary feature for any online data backup service. There need to be multiple copies of every file, kept at every stage of development. The version provide for the strongest possible data loss protection by minimizing the amount of information that would be lost in the event of a disaster. Each file should be backed up after each session, and each copy of each file should be retrievable at any time. Large corporations back up their data this way, and Remote Backup allows small companies to have the same assurance that their data is protected. To ensure total security, all backups are encrypted. Usually, tape backups are not encrypted; anyone who can get a hold of your tapes will be able to gain access to your payroll, tax information, customer database, and other records. Remote Backup stores this information at multiple secure sites, so that you don't need a tape backups. As a result, no disaster can completely wipe out your records, and you will soon be able to get your business computers restarted.Unlike regular data backup software, remote data backup doesn't send backups to media attached to the computer it is backing up. Fully automated, it typically sends the backup at night so the computers aren't being used. This backup process eliminates a difficulty through the process of constantly studying the contents of your drive, modifying the set as necessary. By definition, online data backup service requires redundancy. There must be multiple copies of each file stored [...]

Dedicated Servers – Backup and Recovery Strategies for Web Hosting Companies

Mon, 01 Sep 2008 10:31:00 +0000

Author: Rodney RinglerWhat kind of backup recovery strategy should a company have for its dedicated server? Web hosting companies have been debating this architecture since their existence began. It is really a question pondered by the whole IT community. There are many right solutions, dependent on your company’s ability to handle downtime. The correct solution for you will factor in the amount of redundant protection you need against the overall cost. Before we discuss the different options for backing up and recovering your dedicated server, we should mention that the server hardware, data center, and fiber connection are all critical to reliability. This article is specifically focused on strategies to backup and recover your server’s data.At a minimum, you can create a partition in your hard drive and backup your server weekly or monthly. There is no cost to this kind of solution, but the downsides are obvious. If your hard drive crashes, you will lose your backup as well. This kind of solution is only recommended if you can afford to lose all of your data, which most web hosting companies cannot.Next, you can contract a remote backup service to set up offsite backups. These backups can be run daily, weekly, or monthly. The cost of this solution is around $30-$50/month depending on the web hosting provider. This option gives you a solid backup in case your hard drive crashes. The downside is that recovery time will take 6-12 hours or more depending on how much data you have. The data has to be manually copied over, and this is a slow process. If you can afford the cost, this solution is part of an overall backup system, but it is not recommended as your only solution. The next backup option is to have a second hard drive installed on your server and have it set up to do daily, weekly, or monthly backups. Most web hosting companies that provide dedicated servers will charge between $15-$30 for a second hard drive. This is a nice compliment to the previous solution if you have the budget for both. The recovery time is faster then a remote backup. But unlike a remote backup, if your dedicated server or the datacenter are down, then you cannot access the backup. For most small web hosting companies this is not a problem. If their entire server or datacenter are down, they have larger issues to worry about. We recommend this as a complimentary option with a remote backup.Next, a web hosting company can use mirrored RAID drives. This option will cost $50-$80/month more, but it provides the fastest possible recovery in case of a hard drive crash. You can just reboot using the mirrored drive, and you are back in business. The cost is a little higher, but this is a nice luxury. The downside of this option is that if your server is unavailable, then you still cannot reach your data. Additionally, if the hard drive becomes corrupted it will also corrupt your backup. This is why we recommend mirrored drives as part of a larger solution that includes other backup systems. Finally, there are mirrored servers. This entails the largest cost and is really not necessary, except for those web hosting companies that can tolerate no downtime at all. In this scenario, if the server itself dies you can have another server ready to take the load. In fact, if your company is large enough, you might already need this kind of solution for performance. Some websites require multiple servers to handle the performance, and it i[...]

Backup & Online Backup - Many Options How To Choose

Tue, 12 Aug 2008 07:09:00 +0000

Author: Daniel Shalgi-Shira

A few months ago, in a regular day, while I was working on my laptop, it suddenly froze and the hard drive was dad. I lost all my data in a brief moment. It cost me about 2000 to recover. I said to myself: "this can never happen again!"
When I decided to check out my backup options, I learned that there are several options, and each option has some specific techniques that everyone should know about for creating a successful backup.
First Option - Local Backup
Local backup is every type of backup that will keep your backup data on physical media available close to you. This can be:
* Additional internal hard drive. * External hard drive. * CD/DVD-ROM. * Magnetic Type media.* Local Network backup.
Advantages:
These types of backup are:
* Very handy, and until lately it was the simplest to do. * It psychologically feels safe to have your original as well as backup in your physical possession. Today, I will suggest anyone who backs up his data using this option to think about it as a partial solution at best. I use this option, I am backing up my main PC data to my laptop every day and I also back up once a week to an external hard drive, but all this is only my SECONDARY backup solution. Disadvantages:
On the other hand, the system suffers from certain flaws.
All these types of backup will not protect your data completely. Some very dangerous threats still exist: * Theft * Fire * Natural disasters like earthquakes, floods and more * Manmade disasters like terrorists attacks, war It is mostly NOT a fully automatic backup. It depends on many human behavioral activities in order to be thorough and updated.
Second (Better) Option - Online Backup also known as Remote Backup
This is in my opinion the best solution; it covers all the disasters can happen
Advantages:
* Automatic - Most systems will require just a short setup, and from that moment on they will be fully automatic. * Resides in a safe place - the same as keeping your money in the bank, away from home. It is better to keep your data in a safe place and not at home or at your office, where it is likely to suffer from the same physical calamity that may befall your main storage system. * Unlimited storage - Some of the systems will enable you to backup unlimited data, and this gives you peace of mind.
Disadvantages:
This short answer is: NONE.
The longer answer might include the psychological issue that many people still feel that if their data is somewhere out there it is less safe than near them. The truth, believe me, is exactly the opposite. This streak of distrust in others would have to be overcome.
