Fitz Bits: Steer Clear of Morgan Stanley

Wed, 17 Aug 2011 16:00 GMT

Let's check out some reader requests. Morgan Stanley NetApp Tiffany Starbucks Research In Motion

Each day, I'm featuring several reader requests for the current technical take on a stock. I can't assure you that I'll get to yours, but I will certainly make every attempt to do so, as long as the stock meets the following criteria.

1. The average daily trading volume needs to exceed 250,000 shares. If a stock trades too thinly, chart analysis doesn't help much, because there just are not that many traders involved. One big buy or sell order can move the stock in ways that chart analysis just cannot predict. So let's stay above 250,000 daily shares. ...

Fitz Bits: Pounce on Those Bargains

Mon, 08 Aug 2011 13:30 GMT

Here are the charts I'm highlighting today. EMC Apache SodaStream Fluor S&P 500

Last week I noted that a trader's profits typically come at identifiable periods each year -- those times when the market is particularly "user-friendly" for the trader. A trader who remains prudent and disciplined during those longer periods, when the market is decidedly not user-friendly, is a trader with plenty of cash to deploy when the time is right.

"Prudence" and "discipline" tend to be traits that differentiate professional traders from former traders. Simply put, without prudence and discipline, you'll have no staying power. I'll say it again: You'll have no staying power. Oh, you might stick around for a while, but the market will ultimately take your money. A trending market is a market that does not penalize foolishness. It renders everyone a genius. If equities are trending higher and you are long, you are a master trader! ...

Why Traders Fail

Thu, 04 Aug 2011 13:15 GMT

I have worked with traders for nearly 15 years, and there are many reasons why they fail. A few of the causes include: Taking on excessive risk, laziness, gambling, self-destructive tendencies, lack of intellect and stubbornness. But one of the most common (and least recognized) cause of failure is unrealistic expectations.

Many come into the market saying, "Golly gee, I just want to make 2% each month. Not much at all -- just 2%." Well, if you can do that, then you need to start a hedge fund because 2% each month compounds out to an annual return of more than 27%. That puts you in rarified air. The truth is that you will be down some months (but should never be down a lot), and you will be up big a few months. But most months, you'll just be hanging around. Maybe up just a bit; maybe flat; maybe down just a bit. Most traders make the bulk of their gains during a finite, countable number of periods. If you look back at last year's trading activity, you'll likely be able to point at times in the calendar when you made the big bucks. You'll be able to do the same thing at the end of this year.

So why not trade only during those times that you'll be making the big bucks? Because we cannot predict when those times will be. This is why you have to be involved at all times. ...

Managing Risk in Interesting Times

Thu, 28 Jul 2011 11:45 GMT

There is an old Chinese curse that most folks initially believe is actually an amiable salutation: "May you live in interesting times." While the exact origin of the quote is subject to dispute, one line of thought is that it's related to the Chinese proverb, "It's better to be a dog in a peaceful time than a man in a chaotic period."

I don't think that's true. There is no dispute that we live in "interesting times" ... but I like the challenge.

On the policy front, I have never seen Washington so polarized. Nor have I ever seen so much vilification of the high producers in our economy -- to the point that being financially successful is something to be ashamed of. If you are reaping the rewards of the risks you have taken, you'd better just keep your head down and hide under the covers with a flashlight reading Atlas Shrugged again. ...

Each day, I'm featuring several reader requests for the current technical take on a stock. I can't assure you that I'll get to yours, but I will certainly make every attempt to do so, as long as the stock meets the following criteria:

The average daily trading volume needs to exceed 250,000 shares. If a stock trades too thinly, chart analysis doesn't help much, because there just are not that many traders involved. One big buy or sell order can move the stock in ways that chart analysis just cannot predict. So let's stay above 250,000 daily shares. The stock really needs to be trading above $5. Sub-$5 stocks don't get the same treatment by institutions and portfolio managers. Also, many traders set their trading screens to ignore stocks below $5 just to cut down on their trading candidates. While I'm sure your favorite penny stock is the next undiscovered gem, I'm not in the business of breaking news. So, once your gem is discovered, let me know and I'll take a look at the chart. Make sure you check my recent "3 Stocks I Saw on TV" videos. I don't want to be too redundant, so if I've recently covered a stock in video format, I won't repeat it here.

Hopefully, you've noticed that I alternate between daily and weekly bars in the charts. It's important to understand the underlying rationale for choosing one time frame over another. I differentiate between these time frames in pretty simple terms. ...
