I Can Be Humble and Apologize

I have received some negative responses for my posting of information about The Anchorage Cyber Charter School. Someone even commented the Joseph Lewis listed on the application for charter and the Joseph Lewis who is currently Superintendent of Bethlehem Area School District are two different people. Both individual names listed on public records are Joseph A. Lewis, the only difference is over at BASD Mr. Lewis is using his title Dr. I do stand behind what I have said previously and invite anyone with pertinent information to inform me immediately. I also extend a courteous open invitation to Dr. Joseph Lewis to respond. I also understand his daughter Kelly Ann Lewis is the Assistant District Attorney for Northampton County- I applaud his ability as a parent in preparing his daughter with a suitable education and foundation for her future-
I too am a parent with a dilemma- my son never received his high school diploma. Both my son and I sought psychiatric services after my son was forced to plead guilty to receiving stolen school property. I ask myself every day "What kind of future have I prepared my son for?" The only thing I am certain about is neither of us will ever own a laptop!

Are The Missing Laptops Out of Reasech?

So, everyone is getting ready for summer's last hurrah - I have been busy, busy, busy-burning up the internet lines. I have been looking for all possible explanations' as to where all those laptops went.... Hummmmm.
I was very impressed by the Bethlehem Teacher's Union & their investigation- They really got results that were believable and not too unexpected either. I praise them for their efforts to uncover the truth. Now I have more to add -
In 2003 their was an application submitted to the PA Department of Education for a school named "The Anchorage Cyber Charter School" on the application Mr. Joseph Lewis was named as CEO. Previously there was an online survey offered to determine the public interest.
http://www.livingbridges.org/TACCS_Survey.html

Here is one application:

Community Participation 7.5

PA Dept of Ed response

Technology- Anchorage stated it would provide students with a computer and internet service and provided information about the technology that would be provided to every cyber charter school student and the technical support that would be available. See application, pp. 49-51, 55
Page 15 paragraph 2 CEO & Tech Coordinator can spend up to $10,000 without board approval - (These are my notes)
Overall 2 applications were submitted- find them here with the decisions-

After researching this organization I found this company has a 501 (3) (c) status -the IRS 990 tax filing can be found here:
http://tfcny.fdncenter.org/990_pdf_archive/270/270109813/270109813_200606_990.pdf
Also this company (no charter was granted giving it school status) is registered with the PA Department of State corporate look up- as of 10/2003
I am both sick & disgusted - Didn't Joe Lewis vote himself & "his cabinet" all pay raises over the summer? This is the same Dr Lewis that is in charge of Bethlehem Area School District- & the same Joe Lewis CEO & in charge of curriculum development for The Anchorage Cyber Charter School - seems like there might be an ethical conflict of interest. If test scores continue to plummet & parents enroll their precious children in this school of the future he'll be both rich & powerful - Now how many of you poorer parent's have faced the Death of an Academic Future in your children? How many students were wrongly convicted of steeling (receiving stolen property included) a school laptop- & watched their child deteriorate because THEY DIDN'T DO IT?

Drug Testing For School Districts

I am perplexed over how the educators of today believe they are far above the rules of society. I have raised three children; they do not attend public school- I have dealt with the public school system for 18 years. I honestly will say now if I was more informed from the beginning I would have home schooled all of my children. "Things do not always turn out as planned"- was a saying my Mother taught me. I have seen the most negative out comes so I will try to focus on the positive.
I applaud the efforts of Palisades School District. They are trying to do what no one else (here in PA) has the nerve to! In today's world Students & Parents want a level playing field & need reassurance no one is asleep at the helm. I feel if these wonderful generous kind & caring people want to work with our children then at the very least they should be happy to submit to mandatory drug testing- After all with this policy everyone is reassured No One is using drugs! No tolerance means no cover-ups! In 1970 when I was in high school (in another state) there were 2 well known teachers who were stoners. Things went on as usual in the class rooms - no outrageous behavior but after hours it was different! This was 37 years ago so what do these employees have to worry about?

Taxpayer's Must Pay More For Education

Today I have read an article that has outraged me. The article stated a California school district- Scotts Valley- would be charging parents $36.13 per day for taking their children out of school on a family vacation. The district's reasoning is two fold- first to discourage parents from aiding & abetting hooky; and second to recoup money lost from absences. The laws of public education date back to the 1930's. The article goes on the state a local family took their 2 school aged children on vacation to Hawaii. When they returned they received a letter in the mail entitled "If You Play Please Pay" explaining their new policy. The father wrote a check for $500.00 as a "Tax Deductible Contribution" explaining it by saying -public school is still cheaper then private school.
Although the article reassures us "Representatives of the associations representing state & national school boards said they have not heard of any other districts trying to recover costs when students miss a class." I am absolutely amazed by this situation. What is this world coming to? The laws in this country for which we have used as a foundation to educate our children are mid evil - I am a proponent for fair & unbiased public education. I am exploring a Pocono Chapter for MDS/SDS (Movement for a Democratic Society/Students for a Democratic Society) I will let you know.
