Fairytale Justice in Children's Books

Wed, 24 May 2017 06:56:51 -0500

Everyone is familiar with the sense of justice derived from fairytales. These familiar and time-honoured stories are first encountered when reading with parents at bedtime or watching Disney adaptations on TV. Reinforcing what may be an innate sense of fairness, fairytales promote a sense of right and wrong that lasts a lifetime. Whether or not strengthened later by religious instruction, fairytale justice provides communities with a common conscience, a silent voice that passes judgement on every thought, word and action. Yet, for all the benefits that it conveys, fairytale justice is often dismissed as naive and not representative of real life.

Can Monty Python Meet Tom Holt in a Children's Book?

Mon, 08 May 2017 07:38:01 -0500

A reviewer recently wrote of a children's book, 'I'd definitely recommend this for kids around 9+ and for any parents with a slightly silly sense of humour. This is Monty Python meets Tom Holt, a wonderful read.' At first sight and beyond, this seems to be excessive praise for a book written for young readers, but almost certainly the reviewer had a more modest intention of highlighting certain features of the style of writing and humour that are reminiscent of these two great sources of innovation in historical writing and contemporary comedy. The children's book in question might be described as retelling familiar historical events in a manner reminiscent of Tom Holt's novels, and the humour might be described as in a style similar to some of Monty Python's satirical sketches.

It is estimated that three hundred million people from all age brackets fall victim to depression. One of the disturbing products of depression is suicide. The World Health Organization reported in 2012 that suicide happened to be the second leading cause of deaths recorded among teenagers and young adults between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine years globally. The International Suicide Statistics adds that 1.8% of all deaths recorded globally are as a result of suicide with its rate rocketing at 60% in the past forty-five years. The root cause of depression that led to the high peak of suicide and other forms of mortality cases has been identified by many studies as the lack of strong social support structures resulting in exacerbated loneliness. Thus, promoting the age-long culture of communal living and social compactness evident in many indigenous societies can be a potent remedy to eradicate the bane of depression and its aftermath ills of suicide, and other forms of mortality.
