In the second part of the 19th century the pleasant environment of the City Park became a beloved place for relaxation, entertainment and freetime activities. The city's first ice rink was opened on the lake in 1870, right after the foundation of the Skating Association of Pest. Initially there was only a tiny wooden pavilion next to the rink, where the visitors could warm up and put on their skates.

The boot may feel more like some type of torture device rather than a honed piece of equipment. Skating boots and blades are the main pieces of equipment used for skating and the most important. Mon, 22 Sep 2014 15:41:11 -0500While I've been skating off and on for over 40 years, competed in numerous events and am now a coach for adult skaters, I remember the very first time I stepped onto the ice. I was just nine years old and was so excited to experience the ice for the first time. Of course, back then I wasn't doing it for the physical and psychological benefits of the sport. I didn't know any of that stuff - I just wanted to glide around and have a great time, the way all those figure skaters seemed to have fun on TV.

Tue, 02 Sep 2014 15:47:14 -0500I will never forget that day because up until that point I had never witnessed a jump like that up close and in person. I had only seen ice skating on television, where professional figure skaters seemed to execute jumps effortlessly, almost as if they were just dancing, and not barreling down the ice rink at 20 miles per hour. And, I have to tell you that nothing prepares you to see that kind of power and speed up close. What I also remember is that I saw David's skates at almost eye level as they reached the top of the boards that day- nearly 4 feet off the ground! That's what I call flying!
Thu, 28 Aug 2014 11:39:00 -0500Lacing up ice skates is not as straight forward as one would think. When I was first learning how to skate, no one explained to me how important the fit and feel of the boot on the foot actually is. Tue, 21 Aug 2012 08:06:58 -0500One very important thing with figure skating ice rinks is that the ice doesn't ship away after each subsequent skater. About the worst thing that can happen is as you go into a triple Axel you hit a piece of ice which has a groove in it exactly in the wrong spot, and it's even worse if your perfect landing, at that crucial point is compromised by a piece of chipped ice from perhaps one of the skaters before you. It appears to me that this problem is easily solvable without stopping the event or contest and sending in the Zamboni to make the ice perfect again.
Thu, 16 Aug 2012 09:52:32 -0500Artistic creation in sports is a troubling concept and yet it is still part of the program for figure skating, gymnastics, and several other of the most popular sports in the Olympics. It is always been a contentious issue because exactly who is to judge the artistic ability of an athlete, and can the judges really be unbiased in their opinion? If the judging panel is made up of people from every continent, and from various cultures, then theoretically it should even out.

Thu, 29 Dec 2011 11:01:30 -0600Since 9/11, figure skates are now considered a hazardous item and have not been allowed as carry-on luggage on commercial air carriers. I'm not sure why. Usually, the only people that tend to get injured by skates are the people who are actually wearing them, or their partners.
