Ice Skating

Tue, 23 Aug 2016 15:16:18 -0500

'Ice Skating' as the term denotes is skating on ice, both indoors and outdoors. Specially prepared surfaces like ice skating tracks and arenas are found mostly indoors for competitions and events while in the outdoors lakes, ponds and rivers that naturally freeze over in winter offer excellent ice skating surfaces. Ice skating as a sport probably began when people found themselves with fewer options for outdoor activity and games during winter and may have been done for many reasons like exercise, fun sport, for travel etc.

Fairy-Tale Ice Rink

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 11:11:37 -0600

City Park Ice Rink in Budapest with the majestic Vajdahunyad Castle as a fairy-tale backdrop is located behind Heroes' Square. In the second part of the 19th century the pleasant environment of the City Park became a beloved place for relaxation, entertainment and freetime activities. During the summer boating and rowing were popular sports to practice on the City Park Lake and during the winter skaters also appeared on the frozen lake. The city's first ice rink was opened on the lake in 1870, right after the foundation of the Skating Association of Pest. Initially there was only a tiny wooden pavilion next to the rink, where the visitors could warm up and put on their skates.

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 08:03:27 -0500

The Ice Skating Boot and Blade - Where Do I Start?

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 15:45:36 -0500

It can be tricky for a beginning skater to stay balanced in a skating boot on a very thin blade. The boot may feel more like some type of torture device rather than a honed piece of equipment. Skating boots and blades are the main pieces of equipment used for skating and the most important. The old saying that "you are only good as your equipment" is very true. It's much better to skate to your equipment's capabilities than trying to outskate your skates!

Stepping Onto the Ice for the First Time - What to Expect

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 15:41:11 -0500

While I've been skating off and on for over 40 years, competed in numerous events and am now a coach for adult skaters, I remember the very first time I stepped onto the ice. I was just nine years old and was so excited to experience the ice for the first time. Of course, back then I wasn't doing it for the physical and psychological benefits of the sport. I didn't know any of that stuff - I just wanted to glide around and have a great time, the way all those figure skaters seemed to have fun on TV.

Ice Skating - Stand Up Tall!

Wed, 03 Sep 2014 15:49:33 -0500

It can be tricky for a beginning skater to stay balanced in a skating boot on a very thin blade. The boot may feel more like some type of torture device rather than a honed piece of equipment. The Passion of Ice Skating

Tue, 02 Sep 2014 15:47:14 -0500

I will never forget that day because up until that point I had never witnessed a jump like that up close and in person. I had only seen ice skating on television, where professional figure skaters seemed to execute jumps effortlessly, almost as if they were just dancing, and not barreling down the ice rink at 20 miles per hour. And, I have to tell you that nothing prepares you to see that kind of power and speed up close. What I also remember is that I saw David's skates at almost eye level as they reached the top of the boards that day- nearly 4 feet off the ground! That's what I call flying!

Lacing Up - The Trick to Lacing Up Ice Skates Properly

Thu, 28 Aug 2014 11:39:00 -0500

Lacing up ice skates is not as straight forward as one would think. When I was first learning how to skate, no one explained to me how important the fit and feel of the boot on the foot actually is. It wasn't until I bought my first pair of ice skates in the pro-shop at the local ice arena that I got a lesson in how to put on a pair of ice skates properly. That was about six months later!

What Does It Mean to Be an Adult Skater?

Thu, 21 Aug 2014 13:13:42 -0500

While I skated for a few years as a child, I did the majority of my figure skating as an adult. I still remember when I picked up skating again as an adult, back in the 80's (wow, was it that long ago?).

Figure Skating Ice Rinks and The Future Frequency Strategies

Tue, 21 Aug 2012 08:06:58 -0500

One very important thing with figure skating ice rinks is that the ice doesn't ship away after each subsequent skater. About the worst thing that can happen is as you go into a triple Axel you hit a piece of ice which has a groove in it exactly in the wrong spot, and it's even worse if your perfect landing, at that crucial point is compromised by a piece of chipped ice from perhaps one of the skaters before you. It appears to me that this problem is easily solvable without stopping the event or contest and sending in the Zamboni to make the ice perfect again.

The 2012 London Olympic Games Are Over - Did We Do Better With Unbiased Judges?

Thu, 16 Aug 2012 09:52:32 -0500

Artistic creation in sports is a troubling concept and yet it is still part of the program for figure skating, gymnastics, and several other of the most popular sports in the Olympics. It is always been a contentious issue because exactly who is to judge the artistic ability of an athlete, and can the judges really be unbiased in their opinion? If the judging panel is made up of people from every continent, and from various cultures, then theoretically it should even out.

Travelling With Figure Skates? Now Possible in Certain Countries!

Tue, 10 Jan 2012 13:41:37 -0600

In a previous article, I wrote about some of the difficulties in air travel with figure skates since 9/11. Recently several countries have changed their policies in regard to this. Based on feedback I have received it seems that the restrictions are applied the least in the United States while in other countries interpretation of the new rules is less uniform and skaters are still by and large, unable to bring their figure skates on board when they travel.

Thu, 29 Dec 2011 11:01:30 -0600

Since 9/11, figure skates are now considered a hazardous item and have not been allowed as carry-on luggage on commercial air carriers. I'm not sure why. Usually, the only people that tend to get injured by skates are the people who are actually wearing them, or their partners.

Mon, 19 Dec 2011 09:08:48 -0600

Bruises and scrapes are fairly benign and be honest now, badges of honor that testify to your devotion to our sport, they give you bragging rights around the water cooler. This past summer, I tripped on my pick doing forward cross cuts (OK, you can all laugh at me here) and slid for several feet on very rough ice on both forearms.

Tue, 06 Dec 2011 13:36:31 -0600

Yes, the only jump in skating that takes off from a forward direction does a 540 in the air and comes down on the other foot. Well that's the theory, read on to discover how it actually works out in practice. In reality it's not that hard, I see 7 year-olds doing them all the time! Tue, 12 Jul 2011 07:33:44 -0500

The grace and beauty on the ice is absolutely amazing, beyond belief, and the stars that make it so are real people behind the scenes working so hard to deliver these routines - often giving up everything from a very early age in the hopes of gold, Olympic gold and onto sponsorships and paid performances. It is athletics mixed with theatre dance, and one wrong move could have you really breaking a leg, as the Broadway quote goes. Still, as much as you think you might be up on figure skating, it's so much more, years of hard...
