Every lawyer needs a ScanSnap iX500 scanner on her desk. Ernie Svenson gives a great discussion of the setup of the ScanSnap on a lawyer's desk. If you want a paperless office, this is the scanner you want, and this little video will show you how. I have one on my desk at home and at the office, and I scan everything that comes across my desk. After a few years, your entire life and law practice will be stored in digital form; and, with backups, you are hurricane proof. Now, I have to shred all those years of paper files that I have been paying big bucks to store. Ugh.          Related Stories#WhyIAmASolo - No Law Department Head Will Ever Make Me Train A RobotAUKEY USB C to HDMI Adapter - Use Your Phone On The Big Screen#WhyIAmASolo - No Biglaw Partner Will Ever Criticize Me For Using Google For Legal Research  [...]

In case you needed another reason to switch to T-Mobile, the company is, on September 20th, raising the throttling limit to 50 Gigabytes a month. That is a lot of video, and most lawyers who use their smartphones primarily for work will never even hit 10 Gigabytes. In addition to being the fastest mobile network, T-Mobile now is pretty close to being the only truly "unlimited" network. Unlimited has never been a factual statement anyway, as every carrier has always throttled download speeds when users used too much data. However, you would have to stream a lot of content to reach 50 Gigabytes. I can even use my mobile data connection for up to 10 Gigabytes a month to use the phone as a hotspot. In fact, I am using my spare phone right now as I write this post, since my cable internet is spotty after the hurricane. Thanks, T-Mobile. I am a recent convert; but, I am a happy camper.          Related StoriesGmail Android Update - Access To Your SettingsThe iPhone X - The Palm Pre Is Back Ten Years LaterT-Mobile ONE Family Customers Get NetFlix For Free  [...]

Now, Google is updating GMail for Android so that I can access my Google settings from the phone. This could be a problem, from a security viewpoint. But, having two factor authentication in place, and securing the phone with encryption and a numeric security code makes the phone pretty secure. Have you encrypted your phone? Do you use two factor authentication? Do you use a numeric or password screen lock? If you don't, don't call me for help if you get hacked. While the rest of you legal prognosticators are worrying about AI and robots replacing lawyers and taking legal jobs, Kalashnikov is making something that you should really be worried about. A killer robot that is remote controlled and can be given artificial intelligence that allow it to kill autonomously. Computer scientists are worried enough about this development that they have signed a joint letter seeking to ban the weapons. As we should know from the dawning of the nuclear age, this is a pipe dream. These weaponized computers and their progeny will, most certainly, usher in a new age of warfare, in which humans are remote killers, sending in their machines to do the dirty work. I have no solutions to this dilemma. But, we had better figure out something. It won't happen in my lifetime; but, I don't have a long time left. You millennials had better start worrying and getting active. Oh, and a happy Monday morning to you also.          Related StoriesRoboLawyer?
