Who Will You Be Today? In The Old Days, We Kept Our Typefaces In A Drawer  Charles Bukowski Rails Against 9-to-5 Jobs in a Brutally Honest Letter (1986) | Open Culture. While my entire working life has been as a practicing lawyer, I am certain that this Charles Bukowski letter can be applied to any job or even profession. We talk about law and medicine and accounting as "professions", as if the word can provide some dignity to our lives. But, whether you are a professional, or work in some other job, you can still be a wage slave if you are subject to the rules and whims of another human being. I suspect that there are many BigLaw jobs that qualify for the wage slave designation. As a solo, my only boss is me, and I only serve my clients. But, they are not the boss of me, and I can fire them if I want to. Read this letter and ask yourself if Bukowski is speaking to you. Of course, don't mimic his alcohol addiction. Find an addiction like mine (computers and gadgets) that will only damage your wallet.          Related StoriesAre You A Coffee Snob? I Pity YouRole Playing In Real Life. Are You A Coffee Snob? I Pity You

For many of us, coffee is the fuel that gets us through long days of problem clients, angry Judges, nasty colleagues and other problematic people that the typical lawyer meets every day. However, as this article points out, we tend to seek better versions of things we like and use every day. We get better cars, bigger houses, and keep upgrading our expectations about coffee. I have always subscribed to the canvas water bag principle. Once, in the Army, we returned from a long hike in the woods, and a line formed at the canvas water bag hung in the middle of the campsite. By the time it was my turn, the only thing left in the bag was muddy water at the bottom. However, it was the best water I ever tasted; and, I resolved after that to appreciate every liquid I was privileged to drink for the rest of my life. So, while I admit that I have graduated to Keurig cups, I buy them in bulk, at a discount house, and I never look for a particular brand or flavor. Every day I get to drink another cup of coffee is a gift. Never forget that and you WILL, as this post author says, be happier.          Related StoriesIn The Old Days, We Kept Our Typefaces In A DrawerI Believe In Dog - I Can See The Forest For The FleasMy Kind Of Building Directory  [...]

I love gadgets as much as the next guy. But, I draw the line at using my SmartPhone to trim my nose hair. One of the joys of growing old is the necessity of trimming the hair that seems to grow out of every orifice. But, there are AA battery powered trimmers that get the job done. Okay, I admit that the batteries always seem to be dead when you need it; but, still. I am sure the best friend of the Inventor of these things regrets now the day they were on the playground in second grade and he said, jokingly: "Hey Hiroshi! Up your nose!"          Related StoriesTAG Heuer Android Wear Watch With Diamonds (Can Julie In The Sky Be Far Behind?)In The Old Days, We Kept Our Typefaces In A DrawerI Believe In Dog - I Can See The Forest For The Fleas  [...]

Who Will You Be Today?  Patriots-Jaguars memes are all about the quarterbacks - CNET. I have been struck recently by the range of emotions involving the NFL and Tom Brady and the Patriots in particular. In fact, all professional sports is really a sideshow in our lives, and I find it hard to believe the passion, anger, love and other emotions that the game brings out in many otherwise intelligent people. I have loved the game all of my life, and, in my salad days, when I was green in judgment, I lived and died with my teams. But, this image of Tom Brady with his Super Bowl rings brought to mind the words of Marcus Aurelius on fame and the trappings of what we call the good life in our society. If you have ever loved or hated worldly success like this, it might be instructive to think about the words of the philosopher.  You don't have to be a college graduate in Philosophy to understand and live Stoicism. Ignore the people who pretend to know everything. Live within yourself. There is a lot of wisdom in Stoic truths; but, while looking at this ostentatious display of wealth, I want to focus on one: the folly of the pursuit of fame. As a corolllary to this is the useless seeking of wealth, privilege, power, and whatever else this world has to offer the ambitious. Before you get into this cycle; and, before you find yourself envying Mr. Brady, think about this truth. Ask yourself if it is worth it. Are you sacrificing your life to make partner in BigLaw? Are you working 20 hours a day in a frenzy to buy a big car, or a big house, or to satisfy the urges of a spouse or family? Not only will you die; but, all of your wealth and power and privilege and rank and titles will die with you. More importantly, all of the memory of you in those you spent your life trying to impress will die also. Will they remember you after they are dead? Will they gather around your Super Bowl rings and marvel at them in awe and wonder?  Didn't think so. Also remember that you don't need to be a College Philosophy Professor to live a good life. You just need to live a good life.          Related StoriesI Believe In Dog - I Can See The Forest For The FleasMy Kind Of Building DirectoryRole Playing In Real Life. The beautiful Cape Parrots of South Africa depend upon high forests of old-growth yellowwood trees, in the Amathole Mountains. There are only 1700 of these parrots left on the earth, and they are a study in the symbiosis between birds and forests. Forest despoliation and climate change have decimated the species, and are a case study in the effect of humans on the planet. While the human effect on climate change may be debatable; it is clear that deforestation is eliminating Cape Parrot habitat. Some humans are trying to reverse the damage. It is an open question whether they are fighting a losing battle.           Related Stories#ParrotSunday - The Parrot Whisperer#ParrotSunday - Feather Destructive Behavior#ParrotSunday - All About The Zygodactyls  [...]

We talk to computers all the time these days. We give voice commands to Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, and many other black boxes that connect to the Internet. Rather than discuss whether bots should be handling customer service calls, let's talk about computer enhanced human customer service. The humans who take our service calls now are already enhanced by computers. They are at a keyboard connected to a computer that is supposed to have all the information needed. In fact, it is the computers that need more information, not the humans using them. I was talking to a health insurance carrier yesterday about using their recommended pharmacy, and the representative passed my call to the representative of the pharmacy. That representative had no records of me; and, I spent another half hour repeating my information. Want to use AI in call centers? Improve it, and then give the knowledge to humans. Let computers be computers. Let humans be humans. Jeez.          Related StoriesRise Of The Machine Enabled HumansCES 2018: The End of Lawyers?CES 2018 - Sophia Takes Her First Steps - Creepy  [...]

This is a great take on the big debate of the Twenty-First Century - Artificial Intelligence and its effect on humanity over the next hundred years. We have been looking at this problem in the wrong way. It isn't AI and machines that are going to be the problem; it is the machine enabled humans that will use the machines for nefarious purposes. Admittedly, the machines can, and will, be used to make humanity greater; but, as with all technology and machines since the beginning of time, it is the evil that men do that should be most worrisome. Machine enabled humans can do much damage, and our civilization should be focusing on limiting the damage that humans armed with machines can do; not trying to limit the development of technology. That, as we should know from history, is a fool's errand. Man shouldn't be fighting machines; we should be controlling their use.           Related StoriesCES 2018: The End of Lawyers?CES 2018 - Sophia Takes Her First Steps - CreepyCES 2018 - It's All About Putting AI Into Everything  [...]
