"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and others that push us to be "strong" or to "fight", and so forth. I disagree. Survival of the fittest is more of a commentary on our ability to accept and endure and overcome change. Change is the only constant in our lives, isn't it? The Stoics tell us to expect the worst and to live each day as if our last. While we are living, let's try to spend more time going with the flow. Amor Fati. Love our fate. Adapt to it. Be nimble.          Related StoriesBe Yourself...Everybody Else Is TakenControl Your Emotions, Or They Will Control YouTom Petty - Stoic  [...]

Tech tools should help the lawyer be more productive. They shouldn't make her job harder. So, now that you spend most of your day in a web browser, why not make it smooth, efficient, and as much like home as possible. You are probably using Chrome; which has many benefits for the practicing lawyer, and everyone else for that matter. I spend a lot of time at Court Sites, Public Record Sites, doing legal research, people research, recording documents, conducting financial business, texting, email, paying bills, shopping for office supplies, buying gadgets, and a host of other activities. I like Chrome because my tabs and links and work are seamless among my many devices, from Smartwatches to tablet computers to notebook computers to Smartphones. Chrome is everywhere I want to be. I also use extensions in Chrome to do specific tasks that make my life easier. For instance, one Chrome extension enables me to save a page or block of text to Google Keep with a click. Another allows me to send a page via email to anyone. Another brings all my texts and notifications to the front of my screen while I am in Chrome. Another makes it easy to print a page by putting in a format suitable for the printed page. Check out this article for more, and then go on a treasure hunt yourself. You'll be glad you did.          Related StoriesSecure Your Emailed Documents - Encrypt ThemEverything - Search Your Computer InstantlyTwo Factor Authentication Isn't Perfect  [...]

This little tool is essential to any Windows computer. I don't say that a lot; but, I use it several times a day. Over the years, I have accumulated files and documents relating to thousands of clients. When I save a file or document, I give it a name that is relevant to me; but, Windows search is way too complicated and difficult to use, and I have literally spent half an hour looking for an old file or document; sometimes with no results. I KNOW the file or document is out there somewhere, and it is beyond frustrating to be unable to locate it. This shareware tool sits in the TaskBar, and does one thing well, it finds stuff. Just start typing search terms and files pop up that you thought were lost forever. The program survives on donations, which sounds old fashioned; but, is not used enough anymore. I promise you that you will never use Windows search again if you download "Everything". This is not only FutureLawyer recommended; I insist that any loyal reader download it. You will be glad you did.          Related StoriesTwo Factor Authentication Isn't Perfect5 Tricks To Speed Up Windows 10 StartupSecure Your Emailed Documents - Encrypt Them  [...]

Okay, you people have got to get your stories straight. My cardiologist told me my heart attack was likely caused, in part, by my sedentary lawyer lifestyle, and too little exercise. Now, I am being told that too much exercise may lead to heart problems. Make up your mind, people. If I have a choice, I will stick with the too little exercise crowd. And, if you tell me that you have to get just enough exercise, I will scream. Oh, and apparently it doesn't help if you are a white man. I don't think anyone knows anything about anything. Next, they will be telling us that being a lawyer causes heart attacks. Actually, they ARE doing that. Lawyering is one of the highest stress occupations. Stress causes heart attacks. I think I am going to throw up. Ignorance is bliss.          Related StoriesZTE Axon M: Not Your Daddy's Flip PhoneGetting The Jury You Really WantThe Socks Rebellion  [...]

Everything old is new again, and the Axon Flip Phone from ZTE is a modern interpretation of an old phone. This phone flips open to reveal two full sized screens and it can tilt them so two people can watch at the same time. It's thick (hey, it has TWO screens); but, it is really going to be a hit. Another thing going for it - it will be introduced on the FutureLawyer's birthday, November 17th, which is the greatest day of the year, no? It can stand up on its own, and the screens are very nice. Also, like the FutureLawyer, however, it is thick, fat and ugly. Oh, well. It is the Axon M, and you will hear more about this innovative phone later in the Fall. I agree with the author of this post; a better name is the ZTE Fold, or, my choice, the Axon Flip. You decide.          Related StoriesPocket Pico Projector Is A Versatile PerformerLG V30: I'll Pass, Thank You Very MuchSomebody Is Lying About Exercise And Heart Problems  [...]

No, I am not retiring; but, the LG W150 Luxe is a 23 Karat Gold plated watch with the guts of Android Wear, and it is beautiful. Call it my concession to luxury and geekdom. No, I did not pay the original price of $1,200 for it. You are not allowed to know how much I paid. But, this watch is beautiful, and, even without LTE, I will be wearing it alternately with my Gear S3 Classic. It does connect to WiFi, so it can be used separately from the phone. It is so much better looking than the Apple Watch that I don't understand how anyone could wear a little rectangle on their wrist. While it has a leather band, I am going to upgrade to a gold metal band soon. This video review will give you a hands on view of the watch. It is one of only 500 made, so I guess you could call it luxury.  allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cPuw05yfcGI" width="445">          Related StoriesTizen 3.0 Being Tested - Your Smartwatch Is About To Get Smarter And SmootherTake Calls On My SmartWatch? This article about corporate law departments and the increase in "managed legal services" in order to reduce costs got me thinking about how glad I am to be a solo representing people instead of big businesses. I don't have to focus on the bottom line, as long as I make enough to pay the bills. I don't have somebody "managing" my legal production and controlling how I perform my job. "Managed legal services" is more about cutting costs, and controlling how lawyers and law firms do their jobs than it is about improving the quality of legal advice. Aren't big corporations already too top heavy already? Law practice is stressful enough without worrying every minute about how the corporate bean counters are going to look at what we do. Solo law practice is about freedom to represent real people and small companies that can't afford to pay big bucks for good advice. I much prefer being a counselor at law to being a corporate bureaucrat. Sorry, but no one is going to "remake my law firm" but me.          Related StoriesGetting The Jury You Really Want#WhyIAmASolo - The Big Law Business Model May Be DoomedTop Reasons Your Firm Should Be Paperless  [...]
