You May Have Noticed ...

Thu, 31 Mar 2011 16:19:00 +0000

You may have noticed earlier episodes of Murphy's Saloon reappearing as new in your RSS feed - possibly in a jumbled order. If that's the case, I'd like to apologize.

I'm in the process of doing something I never expected to do: I'm turning off your ability to make comments here about individual episodes.

Doing this has been forced by spammers, who come to this blog page each time I publish a new episode and post at least one spam message with every single episode. That's 200+ spam messages I have to go through and delete. Fortunately, I have the settings such that I have the option of deleting them before they are visible to anyone else.

This has happened three time now, and I'm tired of it. So I'm turning off the comments. You are still always welcome to email comments to murphyssaloon(at)gmail(dot)com.

What makes this particularly irritating is the fact this isn't being done by a 'bot - these posts are made by a real person (or persons) who have to type in a name and a CAPTCHA code before they can attempt to post their spew.

Yeah, there are real people who are paid to do such things, and as far as I'm concerned they are scum.

Audio IDs

Sun, 01 Aug 2010 20:29:00 +0000

This is an open invitation for show IDs - y'know, the audio clips I play between songs that start, "Hi, this is ... "

A number of musicians and a few of my close friends have been kind enough to record and submit IDs over the years, but I'd now like to open this up to anyone, new and longtime listeners alike.

So here's the basic script:

"Hi, this is (insert your name here), and whenever I'm in the neighborhood, I always stop by Murphy's Saloon for a (insert your beverage of choice here), and to hear the best blues around."

You're more than welcome to ad lib a little at the end, if you like.

There are two ways you can create and submit your ID: you can call in to 1-530-28BLUES, or send an mp3 file to murphyssaloon(at)gmail(dot)com.

If you call in, take a deep breath and speak directly into your phone. Don't rush, and re-dos are allowed. If you have the ability to record mp3s on your computer, I'd prefer files recorded at 160 kbps.

Have fun, and I look forward to hearing from you!

You can read items I share in Google Reader here. You are invited to write reviews of Murphy's Saloon Blues Podcast in the iTunes Music Store.

Primary sources of information about the blues: The Blues Foundation and the Delta Blues Museum; be sure to download and listen to the DBM's top-notch (and free) podcast, the Uncensored History of the Blues; BluesRevue.com, the online home of Blues Revue magazine; TheBluesBlast.com; BigCityBluesMag.com, the online home of Big City Blues magazine; and BluesCritic.com.

Recommended reading: No Depression may have stopped publishing as an ink-on-paper magazine, but their website is as active as ever, and is a don't-miss-it source for news and reviews of blues and other subgenres of American roots music. Today's Chicago Blues (Amazon link) by Karen Hanson, an excellent guide to all things blues in present-day Chicago. Karen also blogs about the blues at Today's Chicago Blues.

Two wonderful non-traditional online sources of Chicago news: Gapers Block and the Chicagoist.

(Something noteworthy being done by a hard working and very talented friend of mine: Flamenco Chicago)

A portion of my interview with Ray Wylie Hubbard

Mon, 18 Jan 2010 05:00:00 +0000

After nearly 40 years in the music business, legendary Austin-based singer/songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard said the decision to form his own record label had everything to do with the freedom to chart his own course as an artist and retain control of all facets of his career. Hubbard's new album, entitled "A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is no C)" (release date: Jan. 12th), is on Bordello Records, run by Hubbard's wife Judy. "It's not the financial part of it at all," Hubbard said. "I could have gotten a deal with an independent label and had a bigger budget, but it comes back to that as I've gotten older, I really want to own my music, to own the masters. "Having the ownership of what you create gives me a great freedom. These songs mean a great deal to me and I want to own them, and that's important to me. The whole record industry is up in the air and nobody knows what's next, and I think we can do better selling 10,000 copies ourselves than if we sold 100,000 for a label." Hubbard said the freedom afforded by navigating his own way in the turbulent waters of the contemporary music business led directly to the new album's admittedly odd title and cover art, which are derived from the writings of Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet and Sufi mystic. ... snip ... It was while reading about the European Age of Enlightenment that Hubbard said he found the word "endarkenment." "I thought, 'nobody uses that – what an archaic, weird word.' And then I got into it, and thought, 'what a great word that nobody uses,'" he said. "But the idea is there: if you're enlightened, and everybody else is not. It's either one or the other: either you is, or you ain't. And it just kinda tore around my head, and I thought, 'what a great thing.' ... snip ... Among those who appear on "Enlightenment" are The Trishas, a new female vocal quartet from Austin; guitarist Gurf Morlix, a frequent Hubbard collaborator and producer in the past; and guitarists Derek O'Brian (a longtime member of the Antone's house band), David Abeta (from the band Reckless Kelly) and Billy Cassis (from the legendary Austin band Soulhat). The album was co-produced by Hubbard and highly regarded Austin session musician George Reiss. ... snip ... "Songs like "Black Wings" and "Opium" and "Enlightenment" were all pretty much recorded live straight through with no overdubs whatsoever. We just went in there and did 'em. I think we overdubbed a guitar part on a couple of songs. It was all done to capture the moment — we wanted performance." Read the full story here.[...]

An Unpleasant Surprise ...

Sun, 30 Nov 2008 18:24:00 +0000

As I sat down at my computer Friday morning to start work on the next episode of Murphy's Saloon, I found that not even the external "power ready" light was visible.

I called Apple tech support, fed a sizable number of dollar bills into the slot, was advised by the tech helper to push the internal "reset" button - and got nothing.

<Flash forward four hours (leaving out a number of not-entirely-relevant details of my day):

After a little poking and prodding of my G5's guts at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store, I was informed that the internal power supply unit had to be replaced, which would take 3-7 days.

Soooooo ... if you've subscribed to this show notes blog through RSS, you now have a preliminary written report (from a borrowed notebook computer) about why the episode I'm assembling today is going to be short and, very likely, not up to my usual audio production standards.

Please stay tuned!
