Further to the points about framing, interesting to see that there was only one unframed painting on show: https://www.mallgalleries.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/royal-institute-oil-painters-annual-exhibition-2017/view-kings-heath-train
Doesn't that seem strange? Surprised that deep edge unframed isn't more popular with the artists.

Hello,

I am the artist who won the Cornelissen & Son Award. I am writing to thank you for another amazingly detailed and very specific review! As Anne Blankson-Hemans said, I have had a painting stolen during a paint out session, which was disappointing really. Fortunately, it was not the piece in the exhibition. However, I hope you enjoyed the exhibition and I hope that our paths

Fabulous review Katherine and thanks so much. I saw the show yesterday during the ROI paint out and was really quite taken by the standard and the quality. Dorian (winner of the Cornelissen prize) is the unfortunate artist who had his piece stolen during the paint out. I hope the award more than compensates. Lovely review! Thanks

Three photos for one painting?

That's the first time I've heard of that. Normal re. sculpture / 3D entries but not paintings.

They do sound to be very inexperienced art competition organisers - who need a few lessons in how to run an art competition...

I was told about this a week before the deadline and threw a very bad painting together. Also, you could only enter one painting, but they wanted 3 photos!!!! I only sent one, and their request for 2 more, went into my spam folder; I didn't see it until the day after the deadline. Doing the painting has given a few ideas on other paintings I want to do, so not a total loss. I also told Nathan

Thank you for sharing this amazing info! Our Thanksgiving was very nice with adult children on hand. You are always my favorite “go to encyclopedia” for art. Happy Thanksgiving back to you. Another pleasure to be thankful for on our holiday! Hugs.

I tremendously enjoy looking at this painting. I tell people about it, to see if they know about it. I look it up often on Thanksgiving, and study it over and over. I think the composition and subject matter are genius.

Great review, as usual. Many Thanks

It is always interesting to read an independent review of this exhibition and particularly this year, the extra article about the selection of work. It is an easy mistake/assumption to make but Max Angus, SWLA Vice-president is a she, not he! Tim Baldwin. SWLA Friend.

I also agree this should not have happened and was incredibly unfair to the artists who complied with the rules. A photo of a so called android is no different from a photo of a highly realistic statue. Changing entry rules AFTER the fact is just wrong. I think the judges owe everyone involved an apology and should let this photographer keep the money but give both the awards to other artists

It is sad and discouraging for any artist who reads the rules and complies when they enter a competition to see entries accepted that clearly breach the guidelines stated by the organisers of the show. What message does that send out ? That rules don't mean anything. Not only that artists pay good money to enter competitions so it can leave a very sour taste in your mouth to see an entry not

2017-11-17T15:56:22.482+00:00

I couldn't agree more. When a competition posts its rules and then those rules are ignored by the organization or judges, it is a bait and switch deal. You can't tell every one that these are the rules in order for you to participate and then switch them in such a significant way-- that's fraud. Money has changed hands based on a specific agreement and then the agreement is ignored.

I think you left out the end of second sentence in the second para under 'Breach of the Rules of the Competition,' (Very many politicians get it into their heads from time to time that it would be sensible to do something.)

The photo of the ginger friends (+cat) from a few years ago remains one of my favourites; I feel slightly upset it was apparently a cliche! Thanks for the summary of the exhibition and I look forward to seeing it soon, especially as an entrant who didn't get past the first round.

Oh Katherine thank you for this post. I've always wanted to see a Law piece in real life. And to see one at the Sherwood Gallery must be amazing. I'd never heard of the other young woman - her work is fascinating. Love people so devoted to flowers and combining old and new. Thanks again.

It's now a very well known phenomenon - and I was at the meet with Fabriano when we highlighted the problems. So they know about it - and I think you should definitely report it and see if you can get any redress

see also all my posts about it on my botanical art blog - see https://www.botanicalartandartists.com/news/what-to-use-instead-of-fabriano-artistico

2017-11-09T14:15:10.867+00:00

I've been buying the large rolls about 2 or 3 per year for the last 9 years. I will say that I had this problem once about 8 years ago with a roll too - but I didn't know what it was then. I make a pen and ink drawing on a piece about 50-60" wide and didn't start watercoloring it until maybe a year or more later. The watercolor just sunk into the paper almost as if it were a

It may be the case that the large rolls were made prior to the change in the set-up. I'd be interested to know when you bought the large roll.

I'm so glad I found this discussion. I thought I was going mad. I use Fabriano Artistico 140 lb in many forms - 22x30 sheets, blocks and huge rolls. The large rolls seems to be unaffected by the faulty sizing but the 22x30 sheets are making me crazy. I'm so disappointed in this paper. I started using this paper when I was an art student in Florence, Italy for a semester in 1993 and took

I'll have a think. It would take a bit of work to get it into e-publication standard but definitely worth thinking about.
