TLASILA Blog: A forum for all things related (and of interest) to the experimental collective To Live and Shave in L.A. Founded by Tom Smith in May 1990, TLASILA is antithesis, energized at the juncture of aesthetic revulsion. Genre is obsolete.

Leaving Social Media on January 31

Hi Again,

I've decided to take the leap and quit social media. I find it purposeless and deeply banal, a mere dopamine release mechanism. Bonuses: addiction, immense swathes of wasted time, expurgating communication to garner ephemeral approval and skew valorization, staring at one's fucking phone for hours on end. Being a whore, however, I'll not delete my various accounts altogether; they'll rest in a state of deactivation, lest lolling squatters descend.

To offer a strictly static, promo-only alternative, Karl Schmidt has established a Tom Smith artist page on Facebook. It's not much now, just a few bits of information, but it'll be updated on occasion. Go here.

The lights go out on my public Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts from the 31st.

I want to get back to the blog, to unfettered writing, to human contact in the meatsphere.

And so I shall.

Yours spectacularly,

Acceding Moire Rig, Oho!

Approach to Fear: Regeneration in the News!

I wrote this nearly two days ago but it's fresh enough to still be news...

"Not that it matters much in a world so riven by tumult, anxiety, violence, authoritarian stupidity and inequality, but our wee protest meow, Approach to Fear: Regeneration, was selected as the Best of 2017: Noise by Raymond Cummings and the good humanoids at Magnet. This is such nice news - I just wanted to get some of that intense post-election ANGER off my chest. Sixty-eight friends joined in, et voila. A hearty high-nine to all the contributors. Huzzah KSV!"

It's nothing to gloat about - just one writer's opinion at one magazine. Still, that writer has always been rather perceptive! (Gloating a bit, I must confess.)

What's really cool about all this is the contributors delivered 68 scintillating and solidly eclectic tracks on short notice, and their enthusiasm appears to have been at least slightly contagious. The compilation is far adrift from the usual ports of call frequented by "noise," but with respect to hardliners, sometimes a three-hour dose of outrage (in its various representative stages) feels like a block of concrete to the dome.

We've still got some of the cassettes left - almost 20. Not bad for an edition of 100 with zero hype budget behind it. Square up to it if you still feel like strapping it on. It's €25 (plus postage) for the double C90 version, and €15 for the digital edition (which comes with four bonus contributions and original, full-length takes of a handful of tracks).

Same as always: tlasila [at] gmail [dot] com.

Happy New Year! Frohes Neues!

Hi All,

Good riddance to 2017!

We've been very busy over at Karl Schmidt Verlag, reconstructing the archive, posting restored and new titles to the Bandcamp site (over 56 during the holiday break so far), and cleaning up as much of the chaos as possible from the calamitous hard drive crash of March 2015.

A new year-long mix project will begin today, and we'll get round to editing and uploading the results of the 2016 and 2017 projects as soon as the ringing in our ears starts to fade. (We've had nearly seven continuous hours of fireworks so far.)

Here's hoping all of you have a killer 2018. There'll likely be a To Live and Shave in L.A. tour of the States (and maybe Canada) this summer, and if it goes to plan I look forward to seeing some of you there.

Best, as ever,

R.E.M., REO, Indigo, Chicago: Monthy Episode #2

The second monthly episode of my R.E.M., REO, Indigo, Chicago program airs tonight (2am-5am Stateside) on WGXC 90.7-FM / Wave Farm Radio. This month, hour-long tributes to both Sunny Murray and Z'ev, a half-hour curated by Miami Beach's Holly Hunt, a new episode of I Can Help(during which Prurient's interminable Rainbow Mirror is reduced to a neat and tidy thirty seconds), and brand-new music from Aaron Dilloway, Merkwürdig Riechnerv, and To Live and Shave in H.H. Plus a couple of German things (Borsig Werke, Gerhard Rühm) tossed in for good luck. Stream, wait for a rebroadcast, or remain ignorant - your choice!

New Release Alert from Karl Schmidt Verlag!

Apologies for being a bit lazy over at Karl Schmidt Verlag - I‘ve only been able to summon the strength to release THIRTY-NINE new and archival albums. Sloth, cruel sloth. Many of those in the latter category were thought lost in the wake of the 2015 hard drive crash which nearly destroyed KSV. Some belong to our expanding parallel series, in which long-deleted early releases are supplanted by works from emerging outsider artists. Modesty demands the truth: those of recent vintage are rather extraordinary. Or, if you prefer, “good,” especially compared to normal vanilla good. There are seven or so more to post (including a seven-disc Peach of Immortality compilation); I’ll be offering discount bulk packages for enthusiasts who want to go deep. Check back on Wednesday for info.

Hello Droogs,

Superb new album coming next week from Karl Schmidt Verlag by Mauseloch. More details at the launch. We're off to the mountains for the weekend, so the weekly podcast will be postponed for a few days. The titanic Approach to Fear: Regeneration is forthcoming, as is Short Cut to Hell, the thorny, acidic, ungovernable long-form work from 2016. A formidable detour. Further additions to the KSV catalogue are imminent. The doctor says I'm all healed up from my bike accident six weeks ago. Huzzah!

We Prevent It from Happening!

Here's a Merkwürdig Riechnerv rehearsal excerpt from a July 9, 2017 session at Rampenbunker here in Hannover. We were having PA problems but I love the compromised quality of the sound - its absence of balance strikes me as wondrous.

The trio: Andreas Brüning, Tom Smith, and Bianca Thomas.

Best, as ever,

Merkwürdig Riechnerv: New Trio Debut This Saturday

If you should be in northern Germany this weekend, ask around. We'll be waiting. Doors open at 21:30. Music begins at 22:00.

George A. Romero...

Noooooooooooo! I'm heartbroken. Thank you, George, for your tidy industrial films, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THERE'S ALWAYS VANILLA, SEASON OF THE WITCH, THE CRAZIES, MARTIN (!!), the epochal DAWN OF THE DEAD, KNIGHTRIDERS, CREEPSHOW, DAY OF THE DEAD (!!!), MONKEY SHINES, TWO EVIL EYES, THE DARK HALF, BRUISER, LAND OF THE DEAD (!), DIARY OF THE DEAD, and SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD (best ending of any of his films). Fuck the remakes forever, fuck the billion-dollar-generating industry profiting from your genius, and long live George A. Romero, undead at last...

Sleeper Cell, sans Syrup...

Dear Freaks,

Between January and April of 1994 I recorded a little under 17 hours of interrogations of my late friend and frequent sparring partner, the inimitable Doris Wishman. The tapes were made for a Psychotronic Magazine feature Michael Weldon had asked me to write, but their sound quality was so grievously compromised by the roar of my Miami Beach apartment's air conditioner that they were impossible (at least in those pre-DAW days) to redact. I transferred them a few years ago, and managed to cut through the layers of murk. I still have to pinch myself - Doris and I watched a huge chunk of her deep-fried oeuvre together. (And she directed the first TLASILA video!) Not terribly shabby.

Pluck out your eyes and fix 'em on March 29th - she was on fire! We watched six of her films, then she regaled me for another half hour with Chesty Morgan stories. That would NEVER happen with Michael fucking Bay. You'll have to agree - DW was just too awesome for this dimension...

Excerpts from two of the tapes have been on our Soundcloud page for quite a while. Click here to listen to Doris and I discuss My Brother's Wife. Click here to eavesdrop on our chat about Double Agent 73.

Nico) - "Pullover No Sox" (from BBC Radio 1 John Peel Session, recorded September 14, 1981) (unreleased)I recommend you jump all over it.Apropos of the series, here are my replies to some of the questions asked in regard to the program by a Spanish journalist in advance of TLASILA's upcoming EU mini-tour: 1) Q: Why the name? What's its origin? A: It rolls particularly well off a wicked tongue. And, obviously, it uses the names of four of the most dismal, prosaic bands of all time. It's counterpoint. It's the opposite of what you will find within. 2) Q: Why don't you talk between tracks? We're interested in your opinion. A: There's no need to oversell this music - it speaks for itself. I prefer immersive experiences. No need for narration. 3) Q: Your tastes seem almost too eclectic. Why not choose a theme? A: Well, it should be obvious that I've no fondness for a wide swathe of sound, but I'm always scouring for new things, emerging sounds, provocative ideas, arrogant displays, and older / obscure works of which I was never aware. If that's too eclectic, then I'm guilty as charged. But, there is a theme of sorts - the abrasive, flagrantly anti-rock end of the Neue Deutsche Welle. It's music I never tire of hearing, and I've programmed quite a lot of it into the show. Best,Tom [...]
