Stanko!

So great to hear from you! God, I can't believe that it's been seven years since I wrote this.

I would love to hear any additional Porko Dio stuff (or anything from related bands)--I also have a ton of questions. Could you contact me at

we.here.at.the.little.black.egg at gmail dot com ?

Guys!!!

I can't believeit!!!!

My name is Stanko! I am the singer from Porko dio!!!!

First what I have to say is that your text is beautifull!
I can explain few things. Porko dio was band from Rijeka, 1984-1989, I came 1987. We sounded like Butthole surfers. We recorded demo tape 1988, 4 channel live recording in basement. The day after recording, guitar player, Josip Maršić, went to serve YU army (it was still Yugoslavia). In the meantime I formed hc band Black and Decker. Bass player from Porko dio, Alex Červar, start to play bass with very known noise band S.ex.A.(Sedativ ex Apoteka). When Josip came back, we spend some thime in garage but we mixed all our bands with first drumer from Let 3, Nenad Tubin, and form Regoč, also very known noise band! That was 1989. Regoč record one record: Just so. After that, I moved to Amsterdam and formed Very Expensive Porno Movie. We recorded many lp-ies! Josip from Porko dio also played guitar in VEPM, singer from Regoč (Medo) and guitar player from Black and Decker also sung in VEPM. If you wanna listening all Porko dio demo, I will put those days on Youtube, all material :)
By the way, I founded this, Josip made hand-made Cd :)

Thank you for such a great review of this song and information on the band. I heard it today on Hopi Radio and it brought back memories of how much I always loved the song-- but never knew why. Today upon hearing it -- I instantly knew as it is mysterious and fraught with anxiety. It only takes one song for a band to stand out--I mean, you know, some poets just have one terrific poem. Thanks again.

What a (chronologically) long comment thread! I wonder if you can keep it going until 2017? This song was an obscure favourite of mine and I just googled it because last night I was treated to a cover by CALEXICO (at the corner hotel, Melbourne, Aus.) Do I have to add it was a great version!

Hello (from FRANCE), I met one member of this band one night in Miskolc in the 90's. Spending with him a delicious and surreal night. Very interesting band a mix of Bartok, Kodaly, Zappa, The Residents, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Man Ray, Andre Breton, Max Ernst, Cobra and of course : Jules Verne !... ;-)

I love this song since the sixties cause a band I knew sang this sone every show they put on. I had a crush on the lead singer and he died in the early 70's from a car accient and I wad in the army (I'm a female) but I came home from Korea and my mom told that the guy was killed. Now I remember when I hear this song.. None of the oldies stations will play it not even XM. I had to look up to see what year it came out. Thanks for this blog and thanks to the Nightcrawerlers and Jerry Barstow!!! Thanks for the great memories!

Wow! The man himself emerges!

The truth is, all those fighters from the early days were pioneers, trying to make a dent in a brand-new sport that has since grown into a multibillion dollar juggernaut. In those days, you never knew who you'd find yourself up against, be it an all-out scrapper like Mr. Hess or a slick technician like Mr. Gracie, or a sumo wrestler, or a Savate kickboxer.

Though I do enjoy today's version of the UFC and mixed martial arts, it has changed A LOT (re: tons of rules, weight classes, short time limits). Back when Big Jon was doing it, there was a really good chance of catastrophic injury; hell, people mashed testicles, soccer kicked heads, and even fell out of the cage! Today fighters watch hours of tape on their opponent, but back then you often didn't know who you were fighting until you showed up.

I'd love to see a "where are they now" piece on Jon Hess, as many of the former "original" UFC fighters have had. They are always interesting, especially when they reflect upon their careers. It seems Mr. Hess is still training (as most martial artists continue to do 'till the end) and we here at the (not quite defunct) Little Black Egg are dying to know what he's been up to for the last couple of decades.

And remember, Gentleman Jon, we kid because we love! We honestly hope to see you fight again in the future, and fucking win! Maybe a rematch with Vitor? He's admittedly not what he once was, what with the UFC's drug testing policy, but what the hey? Too bad open weight classes don't exist anymore.

There's always the should-have-been Jon Hess-Dan Severn final...I hear "The Beast" is still fighting...

Nice comments and very funny!
At Team Quest I was nothing but nice to the noobs as I always help new fighters and weekend warriors.I made lots of friends at TQ and wa nothing but a gentleman.

The thing is when I am being judged its easy to go back in time and say things.

The thing about the Belfort fight was the fight was taken on four days notice and under false billing. Belfort said he was Royce's younger brother and I called out Royce so you have to fight him. Stupid me took the fight out of shape(as I could beat Royce or any of his brothers regradless of condition) but I was in no way ready for a jacked up on roids Belfort. Live and learn! ;)

I trained at Team Quest and saw Hess Spare with many others, and this guy has one issue...his attitude. He comes in during sparing sessions ready to kill anyone in the ring with him (regardless of if they are his team member or not). Art Santore could give him a run for his money, but sometimes he would hit some of these young and upcoming fighters pretty damn hard. He is a fat lard that just wants to look like a beast by sparing with guys a fraction his size, but in reality he has absolutely no skill at all.

Well hell. Great interview. I love it that these two non-westerners can better articulate what punk rock is and actually live it than most of our consumer driven youth of today. It makes me happy to read this and know that there really are people out there with common sense that can look at the influence of commercialism, not just here in the us, but the spread of it, and really understand how fucked it is. But can still be positive about the changes that we are able to make as individuals, no matter how small, and have faith that they will spread to the community around them becuase IT IS JUST THE RIGHT WAY TO DO THINGS and people can feel that instinctually. Well if they have half a bran anyways.
Thanks for the post. Def my new fav blog. Ya'll are rediculously superb. Like home-made whipped cream. And that shit is good.

I just happened to come across your blog while randomly checking out.links on curios expedition and liked the title. Your quote immediatlycaught my attention. The following post is one of the best things i have read in weeks. I had to comment. As far as an inability to give a satisfactory explaination of why you feel the album is so important, i think you captured your feelings perfectly with the beginning quote. At least it struck me that way. I am going out tomorrow to fnd that album. I hope it does for me what it did for you. Okay so now im going to read more...
Sorry its so damn long. I NEVER leave comments. Just wanted to say i dig your style.

My late, last minute - weird night, comment: This is the first song I learned on guitar. "Little Black Egg." A simple 3-chord, A-G-D, progression. I heard it from a 45-rpm my older brother (Harry) had brought back from Daytona...I must of been 11 - 12 years old. And a lot has happened between now and then, eh?

Your luxurious prose shames that of your lesser-esteemed contributor, that dreadful scalawag! Death to he, and exalt the Editor!

I always thought "Rollerball" was depressing, but I could never quite articulate it with such grand eloquence. Behold the power of Caan!

I'm excited to see you're posting again. Also, that you mention Black Stalin, whose amazing name almost makes up for the underlying mediocrity of his music. Disappointingly, it turns out the "Stalin" is a variation on "Starling" a tribute to the Mighty Sparrow, rather than a reference to the Russian dictator.

Always been one of my favorite '60's garage/psych tunes. Growing up in Atlanta in the '70's&'80's used to hear it played occasionally on one of the independent radio stations. Very mysterious, low-fi weird minor key feel-always kinda reminded me of the Jaynettes "Sally Go Round The Roses." Covered by countless local punk/psych bands. Bought the reissue LP when it came out in the late '80's- some decent tunes, some truly amateurish embarrassments, but it all comes back to My Little Black Egg-what was it? Acid? Speed? The thin-shelled ovum of a guinea hen (which are black and speckled, btw)? Oh, bother what can I do?

Sad is the fact that they had a member of the band that they have denied and gave someone else credit for something they were not even a part of.
Does not make them much of a band to me, despite the fact that their songs were part of a gentler childhood.

2011-02-17T19:21:48.215+01:00

I've got some live footage of the PLAS, from a now defunct CCTV show. Why was the show cancelled? Even though it was on public access the fat bastard running the thing decided to show, at length, some bizarre homo sex party. Guys getting whipped and balls getting crunched (which is what i think of now when i think of public access) anyway, he also played a-lot of old horror movies and clips of the PLAS live, which were amazing. At one show W.O.W. throws a stick of dynamite into an old muscle car, and the thing fucking BLOWS UP! I kept thinking it was a fake cigar but no, once again the real deal. My old roomate actually served her at his old job (UNO'S believe it or not) just days before her death. It doesn't get better then the Plasmatics, what with the constant chainsawing of guitars and absolute mayhem. B.T.W what the hell is a plasmatic?
