What's the simplest 360 streaming setup that allows an audio input?

Mon, 22 May 2017 12:37:36 -0800

I'd like to set up a 360 streaming system from my recording studio. We'd likely be using Periscope or Facebook Live. Ideally, we'd have a camera in the middle of the room providing video, and an analog audio feed from our mixing board providing the audio. What's the simplest setup (especially on the software side) that could achieve this? What's the closest we can get to an engineer just having to log in to Periscope or Facebook and press "go"?

Name my interview podcast about interviews!

Wed, 01 Feb 2017 10:58:50 -0800

I'm working on a podcast where I interview interviewers. For journalists and whatnot. What should I name it? Ideally the name's not a pun or a goof, makes sense when you hear it and is intriguing. (And if you post something I'll take that as permission to use it. I'll send you a t-shirt or something, I promise :).)

How do I take calls anonymously?

Mon, 23 Jan 2017 13:01:40 -0800

I need to take calls on a landline, without giving out my phone number. How do I do that? I used to use a Google Voice widget, which would basically allow people to click, enter their phone number, and then it would connect my line and theirs. Google deprecated that function of Google Voice. I don't want to give out the land line number, and I actually use my Google Voice #, so I can't give that number out publicly either. Is there any other service that would allow people to connect to my landline without giving out the number publicly?

What reliable VOIP software allows crosstalk?

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 11:52:46 -0800

I produce a podcast with guests chatting comedically in two locations. Skype and Google Hangouts mute one side's mic while the other side is talking, which really messes with people trying to interject jokes. Are there any (relatively simple) VOIP solutions that allow crosstalk and interruptions? (Audio consistency is much more important than audio quality, and we'd like to still have video.)

What kind of contractor do I need to prevent this water damage?

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 15:06:23 -0800

We recently had water from new landscaping seep into our home and destroy our lower-level floors. What kind of contractor do we need to hire to make sure this doesn't happen again? So a few months ago, we had new landscaping put in around our house. The water'd been off for a few months to kill the grass, mostly, and it'd been a very dry summer here in LA, so everything was super dry. Once the landscaping went in, they turned up the (drip) irrigation for a couple weeks to help the new plants root. That's when disaster struck.

Water, apparently coming down from the street-level front yard, and pooled under our house (we live on a hill). It apparently soaked in though our side wall, and warped and destroyed the wood floors in our TV room on the bottom floor.

The landscaping company has agreed to cover the damage to the floors, but we want to prevent it from happening in future (though it's been a couple months and hasn't gotten worse).

We got a quote from a mold remediation company for $6K to prevent future damage. They said they'd seal the side wall of our house (where there are plantings), along with the perpendicular wall which is at the top of the hill. They dig down to the foundation, clean the wall, then paint on some kind of latex sealant. We were planning to bit our lips and go for it, but then they said their supervisor had to confirm the bid, and he tripled the cost to $18K, which seems crazy.

So: what kind of contractor do we even ask to come give us an estimate for this? We're trying to avoid crazy mold abatement people who want to give our whole house a $100,000 Silkwood shower, but also hire someone who actually knows what they're doing.

Where should I buy a cabin?

Thu, 29 Oct 2015 15:30:33 -0800

I live in Los Angeles, and am thinking about buying a family cabin. Where should we look? Our goal would be to find something for less than $200K, somewhere within about four hours north of LA and about six hours south of the Bay Area. We generally prefer woodsiness and less desertiness, and don't mind relative isolation. We're vaguely considering the area north of Lake Isabella and generally Sequoia National Forest, but haven't spent much time in either area yet. Have any experiences those places, or suggestions?

What public figure has a great office in the New York area?

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 13:43:27 -0800

What public creative person (defined pretty broadly, but hopefully at least somewhat famous) has a really cool office in the NYC area? We're looking for someone with a rich, interesting-looking space, interesting tools and great stories. Examples might be say, magazine writer Gay Talese, who works in his townhouse in Manhattan surrounded by memorabilia from all his past stories, or the honchos at Pixar who have special secret hideaways and whatnot. (Definitely looking for personal workspaces, not big companies with fancy buildings and foosball tables.)

Do I need to park in my garage to charge an EV?

Fri, 05 Jun 2015 08:49:39 -0800

I've been thinking about buying a used EV - maybe a Nissan Leaf. I have a very small garage which I use for storage. There is power in there. 1) How much does it cost to install a charging station? 2) Can I park in my driveway and run a power cable to my car for charging? I'm talking about six or ten feet.

What's the best (and easiest) subscription commerce platform?

Mon, 09 Feb 2015 13:22:51 -0800

I run a menswear website, and we have two paid subscription offerings: a newsletter (delivered on our site and via email) and a physical subscription service (pocket squares, every other month). Our provider, Memberly, is shutting down in a couple months. What's the best alternative? We need something that's dead simple, with no coding at all, can handle the digital subscription on our Tumblr blog and via email, and can manage the physical subs, too. If they can help us transition, that's a really big bonus, as is handling some basic customer service. We don't need fulfillment, but we'd be open to including it.

Name! That! Podcast!

Tue, 28 Oct 2014 12:22:55 -0800

My podcast network is piloting a pop culture panel show. Chat about culture high and low, fun and funny and well-informed. It needs a name. What have you got? Pithy and understandable on first glance really helps. If we use yours, we will credit you and send you a box of stuff from our prize closet :).
