Thrash til zer! Fans of classic 80s crossover & hardcore are well served by S&F, who paid tribute to the whole genre on this handful of great records that strictly adhere to the rules in sound, style, song titles, bandanas and artwork (especially the back of the sleeves). In short, if you are old, fat and a fan of famous two-or-three-letters-acronym bands, or young, fat and a fan of Holier Than Thou? and of a rawer version of the Iron Reagan | Violator thing, SAF is your next stop. They sound like the classics so much you almost start believing in reincarnation. Fast, punchy and to the point triplazering homage to the legends!

     Iron Bonehead Productions - none
Monsters exists, and they live among us, in India. They are invincible and they make a lot of noise. Proof: Tetragrammacide. I was attracted by this album title last year and have not ceased being mesmerized since by the sonic apocalypses it delivers. You thought you knew how far metal music could stretch its boundaries and now they moved further again. be amazed. The black death that strikes the listener like the thunder from the other side of the zeriverse also induces shining awe and instant addiction. One must play it again, now! Too bad these lads did not have the opportunity to erase Trudeau from the physical plane during his recent trip to India. If you are into the Dark Descent / Iron Bonehead trademark metal massacre, do not miss Tetragrammacide, champions of the deathiverse in ultriplazering super condensation from the caverns of gigawatts!

Damnable Excite Zombies

(image) 01. Damnable Excite Zombies - Discography 1990-1996, 2011 CD Compilation Remastered
     Not Very Nice - NVNCD-01
Let's get back to real music, can't leave this page headlined by Intense Mutilation. I thought I had posted this D.E.Z. CD long ago, but it was only the Suck Your Soul EP. So here we go with the exquisite and complete collection of the known and unknown recordings of D.E.Z., including a 30 minutes bonus live show. If you are into typical Japanese hardcore thrash, these Zombies are damn exciting: they perfectly unleash the fury of all the codes of the 80s japcore established by the likes of Gauze, Lip Cream, Deathside, Systematic Death and all the legends of that scene. Fast, raw, pissed and crude thrash attacks for triplazering effect! The thrashiverse is bleeding!

Intense Mutilation

(image) 01. Intense Mutilation - Safe Sex, 1989 Vinyl LP Album
     New Renaissance Records - NRR55
After the average, let's dive into the horrendous. This record is pure shit. The music is very bad noisy messy sloppy weak punk thrash. It is recorded like shit and they can't play. There are no riffs. The "lyrics" are supposed to be funny, but they are impotent. The "jokes" fall so flat it hurts a deaf person, and I am a very easy audience for bad jokes. It all sounds like Jackass tried to release a follow-up to S.O.D.'s Speak English Or Die and missed the mark with an error margin of 9,040 miles. Intense Mutilation is to Sore Throat what Crass is to Pink Floyd. What were NRR thinking? Why waste resources and time on this? It must have been a bet, or a money-laundering scheme (in that case, I loudly applaud). This is the right soundtrack for an antifa gathering, the awfulverse hath crapped again!

I mail ordered the first album because of its raving reviews, and was pretty disappointed (no pre-screening through youtube in 1984): I had expected something more along the lines of Satan and Mercyful Fate, but Burning Star was less exciting, it was "only" another version of the Priest / Maiden formula. Ah, but after that, on Remnants of War they greatly enhanced the heaviness of their output and all was well, I was hooked on their heavy heavy metal. That is phase one. Upon their return in 2007, phase 2 started with a rerecording album of 80s songs (Pasts of the Sin), well well well, and then, bam, they went on full thrash metal with the last four albums. They did not loose that melodic vibe that always pleases fans of Metal Church, the songs are still as catchy and crunchy, but they added a strong Death Angel angle to their arsenal and it makes for a handful of very strong albums, especially the latest one Vampiro. If you are into the likes of Flotsam & Jetsam and Forbidden, phase 2 of the Helstar catalog is a mandatory stop. If you are into more regular heavy metal, phase 1 is a must - except maybe for the average, demo-sounding Multiples of Black. But really, the whole collection is greater than great. Will not revolutionize your world, will enhance it if you are into Attitude Adjustment and all the 80s bay area crossover. From Cultes Des Ghoules we have today two CD rips that gladly replace the vinyl rips - especially interesting for the monumental Henbane album, which is a masterpiece of sleazy blackness - those riffs!!! So addictive. And then a CD reissue of their noisy, not that great first demo. A new compilation of the demo & non-Peaceville material from the legendary Electro Hippies will rock your wheelchairs, you dirty 80s grind maniacs - 60 tracks of what we still crave 35 years later! Mandatory especially for their side of the split with Generic and the Peel Session, better than any vinyl rip. Merci Vince. Esoteric reissue their monstrous 1993 demo in an amazing digibook, but not as amazing as the crushing sonic content of the disc - more giant doom and heavy death and general dissolution into the nadir of the flesh and the mind, genuflect now. The return of Exhumed is good, but I say without shame that I expected more shock and awe - I think maybe their Exodus cover is the culprit, it is so great that the rest of the albums may sound a little pale (and we could do without the movie soundtrack interludes). Pestilence rule! The reissue of Consuming Impulse is a great release, especially for the live bonus CD, but the true hero is the new album Hadeon which is a return to the Testimony days - classy and weird and dark and sophisticated without sacrificing the trademark Pestilence brutality, my favorite of theirs since their return 4 albums ago, a big album already for 2018. As big as Procession's new release? The constantly extra high quality of their doom metal is some of the best in the Solitude Aeturnus department and this album does not lower their standard - large, magnificent, haunting. Then[...]

Extra hot hardcore punk rocking music is on the menu. Beanflipper were a genuine engine of crossover from hardcore and punk of the early C.O.C. sort with a flavor of Government Issue to lots of crust and thrash for the E.N.T. and Poison Idea crowd as well as epic layers of Black Sabbath and Gwar and mid-tempo British death metal from the 90s. On paper in goes everywhere, but the sound and vibe are very consistent, and powerful, and expertly delivered - and memorable. This trio of discs is an achievement in sonic divergence with a natural flow. This exploration of many rough sides of the aggressive without losing the catchy element nor the melodic spacey bits is a complete success. In their unique way of allying reggae-style grooves with the alt-rock vibe that could also be claimed by Shellac, only with much catchier melodies, they turn the brain into a well rested  place. The early, pre-1991 stuff is a little more abrasive than the rest but never as raw and wild as Minor Threat, and the whole lot is an amazing sonic experience. 02. Vasaeleth - All Uproarious Darkness, 2013 CD EP
     Profound Lore Records - PFL-121
From the pits of eternal moisture and damnation, please welcome Vasaeleth and its primitive sounds. This is only for fans of basic, raw, two-riffs caveman death metal. The first album sounds like an early Incantation test bench demo. Should we keep this riff ? And this one ? Let's play them four times together to check out how it all rolls out while I vomit in the microphone. The mini CD is not that much more advanced, but it has a slightly better production. Depending on your mood, this stuff can be irritating for its laziness, or fun for its peddling of cavernous barbarism. It does not feature the extremity of, say, Tetragrammacide (my new darlings), nor the heaviness of, say, Temple Of Void (my other new darlings). But despite these unkind comments, it still delivers sufficient competency in the dirty decibels department, like a very fast doom fest. And I like the artwork.

     Havoc Records - HC-1231
Dbeat aggression day! Skitsystem featured the singer of At The Gates but specialized in Discharge Noise Terror worship, the harsh way. Stigmata is maybe a little more "melodic". Fans of the second wave of Swedish crust cataclysm of the early Disfear and Wolfpack sort will totally enjoy Skitsystem, but they already know that. Very efficient, very raw, very merciless nervous system stress test! Crust mania till triplazer!
PS: a FLAC link to the 1st album is welcome.

So let's hear what's in this almost four decades long output. There are a few black dots in this series - I have a hard time with the Rhett Forrester albums and the excessively cheesy Irishmore - but the main course - everything except 1982/1983 and Irishmore - is entirely awesome hard rock and speed metal, with a few layers of cheese in the form of ballads, you know, heavy metal ballads. But the rest was meant to become classic material. They could have made it to the front league with Judas Priest and Saxon and Iron Maiden. My most favorite is the victorious Immortal Soul - that one has a particular energy, the first song is simply the most exciting metal anthem on this side of the Zeriverse. Featuring Mr Rich Hoak of Brutal Truth fame on drums and main microphone, T.F.D. has gloriously showered us with sharp decibels for almost two decades. Short, fast and furious, every song is an explosion of straight forward grinding thrash with a touch of the early D.R.I. spirits, with emphasis on the grind, without ever sacrificing the catchy element. It does not sound like the dark tortures of Brutal Truth yet it is as awesome. And they are the greatest folks I have had the pleasure to meet in this scene, touring with TFD is like a vacation. The 1999 CD is a genuine item I ordered on the defunct website which was the precursor of Bandcamp/Soundcloud and all these streaming websites we are now used to. It was all the rage in the 1990's and it was actually the first open social media website, long before Facebook and such.
