Neurosis - Honor Found In Decay, 2012 CD Album Limited Edition     Neurot Recordings - NR085 According to none other than myself, Neurosis has three distinct era: the hardcore of the 1st two albums and EP, the experimental anger with lots of doom and noises of the 90s, and after that the sad and melancholic waves of sweet long stuff. I will eternally be a fan of the hardcore era, from the straight forward classic punk thrash of Pain of Mind to the more Blast-like sound of Word As Law. For something completely different, the following anger/doom albums are amazing too - the high point being the evil monster Through Silver In Blood. Then I started to get bored with the sad stuff. It is musically excellent, but they can't sing and it ruins it for me. You need actual singers to perform on this kind of musical landscapes, not depressed lumberjacks who lost their axes and saws in the pond where suicidal angels come to drown. According to Church Of Zer standards, you are allowed to use a death metal growler on your sad music if he has the class of the guys in Temple Of Void or Esoteric, or else Peter Steele. But not his post-bar fight whining. Too bad because most of this stuff could match the Sonic Mass from Amebix, but it does not because the Baron sings beautifully, lui. That's why my favorite of this era is the awesome album featuring  Jarboe, who sings like an angel about to dive in thick black waters without a snorkel. This album rules! Then there was that tedious, bore fest of a show I attended a few years ago, which did nothing to revive the passion. Neurosis ruled, and they probably still do, let me know if the last album is worth a try for non-insomniacs.Remove brackets and unzip: [zer of mind]!ZER Neurosis ZER! MRR readers should read this. 01. Hellwitch - Syzygial Miscreancy, 1990 CD Album
     Wild Rags Records - WRE/902-2
02. Hellwitch - Final Approach, 2003 CD Compilation
Progressive Arts Music - PAM 1017
03. Hellwitch - Omnipotent Convocation, 2009 CD Album
Xtreem Music - XM 065 CD
Per strong suggestion from Stijnfest616 after the Sadus post, here come the crazy noises from Hellwitch. By crazy I mean intensity of the size and quality of Ripping Corpse at the speed of Cryptic Slaughter. This is the perfect crossover of thrash and death metal with mind blowing, unique riffs and insane vocals. It took me a while to ignore the abominable artwork on the first album and actually listen to the thing (the kind of disc I would just skip at the record store), but once it was done, I was ashamed of myself. This is just too good to be bypassed. Wild Rags knew how to select their artists! Either completely worthless or totally geniuses. And that return album from 2009 is no less amazing, they are still in total command of all their weaponry. The 2003 disc is a compilation featuring the first album and various demos that go back to 1984. Triplazering thrash til the end of everything  and beyond!

Hardcore punk with the dbeat tag: zer. Great stuff with almost zero originality that equally draws from the template (Discharge) with increased speed and diminished menace, and from the first (and best!) Neurosis record. It actually sounds like the dudes from Neurosis perform the vocals here. There are more subtleties in the guitar department than on your regular Discharge barrage of riffs, but it is not necessarily an improvement as the melodic dimension of some of the riffs brings out the sadness of the neurosisness while I'd rather have noise and destruction. I don't know, sadness works better in the realm of doom metal as far as I am concerned. But this is very well done anyway and deserves the full attention of fans of augmented dbeat hardcore.
Link to FLAC of the 1st album is welcome.

Sadus - Out For Blood, 2006 CD Album Enhanced     Mascot Records - M 7173 2 Super intensity and mind ravage from the legend of thrashing death aggression! Extra high class thrash bordering on the territories of death (the style and the band - yeah some of these dudes played in Death too), this is more or less the top notch of the style: the extra wet dream of fans of Dark Angel | Wehrmacht | Destruction, only faster, meaner and technically expanded - those superb bass lines. Extra sound brutality by experts in brain surgery, as fucking fast as fucking tight and out to get you like a pack of mega-sharks. Illusions/Chemical Exposure is one most brutal debut, then highest defenestration is achieved through the unbelievable classic Swallowed In Black which managed to vaporize all metal heads despite the late 80s blossoming of death and black metal. One of the very brightest neutron stars in the EZTT thrashiverse! The following two albums have a more controlled and darker Coroner vibe, especially Anger, while Out For Blood was a nasty return to straight thrashing in Slayer fashion. All great classic stuff. 02. The Grim - Face Of Betrayal, 1988 Vinyl LP Album
Alchemy Records, Alchemy Records - CHEM 107, 06-07226
I bought the 2nd album because it was released by the almighty Alchemy Records, whose invincible legacy of Sacrilege BC, Clown Alley, Neurosis, Melvins et al. made subsequent releases mandatory blind buys. Face of Betrayal was indeed another success in the cold crossover department - heavy, dark, catchy with slowed-down Excel or C.O.C.'s Technocracy overtones and without losing that punk edge. Then I tracked down the first LP and was surprised by the rough punk style and sound of a Circle Jerks | Jerry's Kids hybrid. It is a minor US HC classic! And generally speaking, the Grim satisfies fans of Sacred Denial. Old school HC punk crossozer!!!

This Void continues on the path of almost progressive metal (read: non-linear and moods shifting, without a sacrifice to undue complexity) set on the previous masterpiece. This release is about matured music and master riffing, and it is another success for these Norwegians. If you enjoyed Morbid Dimensions or Morbus Chron, do not miss it. Japanese punk always rules! Same thing about that G.I.S.M. 2015 compilation of remastered classics except for the bolshevik part- musically nothing new, only classic stuff with a louder sound level. Better than the originals? Not sure. Now let's consume this Final Bombs EP that is maybe a little less exciting, less energetic than the two albums - still excellent post-82-Discharge worship. Then for the new stuff, not one but two Ningen Isu releases - the killer new studio album and an incredible double live (did not rip the DVD to audio as the songs are all on the CDs). This band is just more perfect every year, loud rock fans and Melvins must obey. We have here three different bands: malign, evil, tomb-shattering true Norwegian black metal with the guy of Taake, a one-man orchestra paying tribute to old school blackness of Venom/Bathory inclination, and malign, evil, tomb-shattering old-school Possessed/Death influenced death metal. Today is the day to dive again into the classic Hallows Eve albums. The LP rips were posted 4 years ago, here are the CD rips from genuine reissues, NOT the abominably butchered remasters from the History Of Terror 2006 box-set. Tales Of Terror is still the infinite classic it ever was, I have always ranked it at Morbid Tales or Hell Awaits level, yes, that high. This album is irrevocably awesome from all angles and any Slayer | Iron Maiden fan can only melt when playing it. No fillers, no second rate songs, only mind-blowing speed metal! The album that never ages and always bangs your head! The other two are of course excellent too, and perfectly pass the test of time too, but they are somewhat just a little less exciting or simply less epic and catchy, or maybe it is just me. After Venom had carbonized the metal, Bathory, Sodom and Celtic Frost soon followed to demonstrate to the flabbergasted hordes how to make black metal sound still more evil.I spent the summer of 1984 listening to Apocalyptic Raids on a four-times-a-day basis alternating with At War With Satan, Haunting The Chapel and Bathory, that's why the A.R. rip here is a little shaky, record worn out - use the CD rip instead.I spent the summer of 1985 playing Morbid Tales on a four-times-a-day basis, alternating with Infernal Overkill, Seven Churches and In The Sign Of Evil, but the M.T. rip is pretty good. Still, the CD rip is better.None more classic than CF! A[...]

     Skull Crusher Records - SCR-0001
02. Rosenfeld - In The Garden, 1994 CD
     Skull Crusher Records - SCR-0003
Vicious thrash metal from the venomous pits of Japan! Rosenfeld sound more interested in sadism than in anger, this is cold thrash with lots of distortion, slow swamps and a few tricks that could have been used by Coroner. Precisely extracted from a black radioactive stone, the sound on these discs saw the spine and then the head that bangs while remaining addictive after full separation. Absolutely relishable classic thrashanese zerification of the chainsaws!

Birdflesh insert the necessary fury of grindcore in a humorous settlement that does not diminish the impact of the fury, unlike so many joke acts. The Farmer's Wrath sounds pretty close  to a Macabre album and is maybe the least savage of the lot. Mongo Musicale is the major beast here. (image) 01. Morsüre - Acceleration Process, 1985 Vinyl LP Album
     Devil's Records - MAD 2014
A couple of posts ago, I had nasty words for the 80s French punk bands. Obviously, the same case could be made against the 80s French metal bands. Many of them sucked incredibly, while others were amazing. Morsüre sit on the fine fence between incredible and ugly. My problem with this record has always been the abominable sound of the drums (which 1) were artificially accelerated in the studio 2) recorded using electronic pads; these two unfathomable sins cannot be redeemed). They sound horribly thin and plastic, and they definitely ruin the whole album. On the other hand, the music is a barrage of vicious thrash metal of Teutonic influence with rather nasty & complex riffs mixed with a crossover angle more competent than early Cryptic Slaughter. And for once with a French band (from the 80s), the vocals sound good, like a middle-ground between early Voïvod and early Assassin. Early, early, early. It's 1985! Fast, loud and merciless record! If it were not for the horrible drums, this would be a classic.

US punk rock at its finest! That's the stuff DI and Zero Boys fans have always needed, and vice-versa. The insolent, catchy and vigorous songs shake the meat and swing the spirit in barefoot rocking punk fashion with such excellence that Adolescents forever sit at the round table of the classics. Rock until you drop!

The elongated classy amalgames of heavy and light things combined into architectures of smooth soundscapes with strategic cliffs and rifts in these recordings are the fabric of all that is required to watch dead leaves fall from the surrendering trees.HEart of The Ages contains the only black metal sections, and they are vivid among the atmospheric parts. The other albums elaborate the progressions of cold metal and majestic rock with perfection and desire and an overwhelming feeling of positive conquest. And there is that superb White Rabbit cover. I demand a lot from this kind of bands who can bore my neuron quite quickly, but the victory of In The Woods... is complete despite their completely non-funeral, yes-lifeforce approach. La Nouvelle Frontière, Pas De Frontière

(image) 01. Various - La Nouvelle Frontière, Pas De Frontière, 1987 Vinyl LP Compilation
     Panx Productions, Panx Productions - PP002, POBBS06 , Compilation
Contains 22 songs by: Pin Prick, Vatican Commandos, Random Killing, President Fetch
Great compilation from 30 years ago! Actually, 75% great: President Fetch, Random Killing and Vatican Commandos deliver the goods in classic hardcore punk fashion with all the genericness but also all the competence. However Pin Prick is just a bad attempt at punk rock through its bad music and below ridiculous lyrics. They sadly represented some sort of a norm in the French 80s punk scene - on average, you  had the choice between hilarious pricks like Reich Orgasm whose bad music was secondary, and clueless items like Pin Prick whose music was rendered all the more painful by the abysmal singing and "lyrics". Alright, I may be unfair, but I have had too much of the very bad French punk shit in my youth. Never mention the abominations Bérurier Noir and Pariapunk in my presence! Fuck! Now let's concentrate on the good stuff on this compilation!

     Dark Descent Records - DDR073CD
02. Krypts - Remnants Of Expansion, 2016 CD Album
     Dark Descent Records - DDR166CD
Death. doom, Finland! First quality cavernous bash and gloom for martial funerals is always a treat at the Church. These two recordings offer nothing really new in the already vastly exploited territories of Disembowelment | Autopsy | Incantation, but they are nonetheless exquisite demonstrations of excellence and black heart. The first album has more of the explosions of speed, the second one is more focused on the doom. Both reek of the end of the universe and orbit the doomiverse with glory and pride. There is majesty in this heavy and unclean desperation, the tar swamps are opening and the beasts are salivating and many necks are yet to break. In the top of the decade! Killer doomification of the triplazer!
