He murdered his wife and thought he would get away with it. An evil man. His sons deprived of their mothers love is despicable.

Surely the bit about him going back to finish her off is pure conjecture as nobody knows except Joe? Also - were the clothes in the washing machine forensically examined? One other point - wasn't the body exhumed so they could examine the note JOR put in her coffin? What did that note say?

Lynn. If you read the book and most interviews Rose or Jim Callely gave to the media, she doesn't paint any of the O'Reilly family in a good light. I was just expressing my personal opinion after meeting only one of them.

I don't recall Rose ever mentioning Derek in the book. Derek could be the nicest chap in the world, but that has nothing to do with Joe really. :)

As for Joe, I think he think it. *However*, I am not convinced that the evidence showed him to be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Gut feelings should never be the standard used to judge a legal process. Furthermore, we now know that mobile phone pings are unreliable evidence. In fact, this knowledge has even led to exoneration in the US: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/splitthemoon/2014/10/serial-episode-5-lets-talk-about-cells-baby/.

whatever about Joe himself. Had occasion to meet his brother Derek and his lovely wife and children recently. What ever opinion I had of that guys family I may have formed from reading Rose Callelly's book was totally flawed, well of Derek anyway. You'd do well to find a more likable, gentle and amiable big man.

if it can be proven that mobile phone tracking can be inaccurate.you could have one hell of a miscarriage of justice case in Irelands history. could cost the state a lot of money.and yet he could still be guilty

james did not deserve the cruel death inflicted apon him, he was a caring & respectful father, son, brother. sadly james was not the first person to suffer a fate ment for someone else nor will he be the last. the only true justice given to his memory now will be the loved lives of his childeren. rest forever james.

well said Dennis, life in jail for having an affair is what this adds up to.too many gaps in the evidence to convict a person, john o,brien in waterford and ian bailey in cork nearly ended up in the same boat as well

2012-10-08T14:27:43.777+01:00

So because nobody else's finger prints were at the scene that's proof enough in your eyes to convict him? You seem to conveniently ignore points raised by myself and others as to the complete lack of any credible CCTV evidence to support the mobile phone technology which in itself is becoming less & less convincing as time progresses.

Well perhaps the blood of the victims brother on the washing machine should not have been so easily dismissed - there was dna! why not have him checked out thoroughly.

2012-09-05T11:47:17.329+01:00

Yes,you would think he would have the cop on to realize he would be number one suspect, but this guy was not thinking with his brain. It would prove nothing if tons of DNA and thousands of his fingerprints were found in the house, after all, he lived there. The fact that there was no DNA, fingerprints etc. from an unidentified person or persons is of much greater significance. He did it alright.

2012-08-21T02:45:04.693+01:00

So basically there was no physical or DNA evidence on him or his belongings, No witnesses to this horrific crime, CCTV of the car the Gardai claim was his being described as 'inconclusive that it was even the same make or model' by the prosecutions own expert witness, a book of evidence somehow ''finding'' it's way into the jury room, a member of the original jury being discharged as she had told someone ''sure everyone knows he's guilty, I read the papers'' before the trial had even begun, no CCTV evidence across the 20 odd miles or so he's meant to have travelled to support the mobile phone placement evidence. as someone else has already said, was every CCTV camera in Dublin not working that day?? and finally, as time evolves it's becoming far more apparent that mobile phone placement is not the exact science it's made out to be. Social networking users of Facebook or twitter using mobile phones have often had their locations given as somewhere absolutely miles away from where they actually are. The comments made by other posters seem to reinforce this. at the end of the day, the guy seems to be serving a life sentence based on little more than he was having an affair, which, let's face it would be a reason for a wouldbe killer to NOT go ahead with a crime as he/she would be under immediate suspicion...

2012-07-07T16:25:29.161+01:00

I'm not really familiar with details of the case, so I cannot comment about this guy's guilt or not.

However, I work in telecoms and am familiar with the technology used to identify the cell that a phone is connected to. The problem with locating someone on the basis of connected cell is that modern networks (including Ireland) use a load sharing system which 'bumps' you off your nearest cell if that cell is has a high load (i.e. lots of other connected phones), this means you can sometimes be connected to a cell which is nowhere near where you physically are.

Of course, I'm not suggesting that this is the case here, but then again I'd not be surprised if no one bothered to check.
