Somewhere I can talk about my favourite subjects: old British comics, story papers and paperbacks.

E S Hodgson

2018-04-21T05:03:05.710+01:00

E.S. HODGSON by Robert J. Kirkpatrick E.S. Hodgson was a well-known artist in Dundee in the 1890s, but became better-known as an illustrator of boys’ adventure stories from around 1900 to the late 1930s. He was particularly associated with Percy F. Westerman, illustrating 17 of his books between 1908 and 1936. Hodgson was born on 25 April 1866 in Arbroath, Forfarshire, Scotland, and

Nothing much to report as I've spent part of the week looking for work and the rest getting another essay written for what will be Volume 4 of the Forgotten Authors series. I've a short list of people that I've been meaning to write up – some of them for years – and I've been doing at least one of them in each volume. Bracebridge Hemyng in the second volume was based in part on something I'd

J Macfarlane

J. MACFARLANE by Robert J. Kirkpatrick A search for information about the illustrator J. Macfarlane would almost certainly lead to the conclusion that he was Australian. Several websites refer to him as a “late colonial period painter, political cartoonist and illustrator [who] made dramatic historical drawings of Australian exploration subjects…..:, and that he “flourished c. 1890 – c.

With the new book out, I'm finally taking a few days off. I have a habit of letting things pile up. "When I get a chance I'll do that." Unfortunately, I never get the chance because I've not paused between books for a decade. Well, completing the latest book has coincided with my birthday and I fancied doing something different for a bit. Now, this might not be everybody's idea of a break, but

He was particularly well-known for his work on The Strand Magazine between 1890 and 1907, and the boys’ story paper Chums between 1892 and 1935. The first member of

The text for the third volume of Forgotten Authors is finished, checked, spell-checked, resized, indexed and (in the case of the e-book version) reformatted. Mind you, even though I've gone over it and over it, the odd little glitch will still exist to trip me. Why, for instance, would three out of 204 footnotes, change font size when I copied them from one document to another. I swear I did

Eagle Times v.31 no.1 (Spring 2018)

2018-04-01T05:03:17.398+01:00

I haven't seen a copy of Eagle Times for probably a decade – since the days of Howard Corn editorship. The look of the magazine hasn't changed a bit in all that time, the editors creating a wonderful scrapbook of all things Eagle through a series of articles that, for the most part, centre on the famous comic from the Fifties and Sixties. After thirty years and 121 issues, you would have

Louis Gunnis

LOUIS GUNNIS by ROBERT J. KIRKPATRICK Louis Gunnis was a talented and versatile artist who could turn his hand to a variety of forms, and while he illustrated only a handful of children’s books (he was best-known for his work in comics and story papers) his life is worth recounting, especially in view of his tragic death. He was born in Margate, Kent, on 25 November 1862 (and not in

Easter has sneaked up upon me after a slightly weird week. I think turning the clocks forward last weekend has thrown out my body clock and it still feels like I'm doing everything an hour earlier than I should. I'm just feeling a little off my game... tired when I shouldn't be, awake when I don't want to be. Life's jet-lag. On Friday I had to walk down to the Post Office to drop in a book and

Comerford Watson

COMERFORD WATSON by Robert J. Kirkpatrick Comerford Watson was a commercial artist and designer from whom book illustration appears to have been a minor sideline. He was, however, known to Percy F. Westerman collectors as the illustrator of three of his adventure stories in the 1930s. He was born on 14 May 1885 in Longtown, Cumberland, and baptized, as William Comerford Watson, on 31 May

Comic Cuts - 23 March 2018

2018-03-23T05:03:14.053+00:00

The last of the essays for volume 3 of Forgotten Authors was finished on Monday evening, and I'm now in the process of re-reading and re-writing the essays that will make up the contents of the book. The first drafts total around 67,000 words and I'm not expecting that to grow by too much. The rewrites can even bring the word count down in places, removing repetition and unnecessary details.

British Library Crime Classics

The British Library have been publishing a collection of classic crime novels of late which have proven surprisingly popular. Paul Gallagher highlighted the series in an article in The Independent back in December 2014, describing J. Jefferson Farjeon's Mystery In White: A Christmas Crime Story as a "Festive sleeper hit" that was selling in "astonishing numbers". According to Waterstones, it
